Dr. Anomaly
Has there been an official published write-up of a laptop computer with a wireless net connection? I'm fooling around with such a write-up right now, and have a feeling I'm making it way too complicated. And no, there's no such beastie in the Gadgets and Gear. MitchellS
Re: Wireless connection laptop? Just buy the computer with: Detect (wireless internet signal), transmit, 360 degrees, passive. 10 points. If you want to want it to have a modem add IIF. Dr. Anomaly
Re: Wireless connection laptop? I guess, really, what I'm wondering is how one represents a connection to the Internet in order to do things like put up or maintain a web page, send/receive email, etc. by remote (wireless laptop). Doing the radio bit to hit a hotspot -- that's obvious. How you represent the internet connect -- that's not obvious. Heck...maybe just a 1-point perk "Internet connection"? ghost-angel
Re: Wireless connection laptop? The connection itself? SFX really. Unless you want to get so granular as to seperate out the seperate wireless bandwidths used in the modern world. Best idea I've got really is a Limit on HRRP "802.11 Wireless Bands only" so it's not connecting to everything willy nilly.
ghost-angel
Re: Wireless connection laptop? There's also the Computer Link Perk .. it's intended for otherwise non-public access since the idea that the 'Net is "free" to all permeates most games. Dr. Anomaly
Re: Wireless connection laptop? No, all I'm wanting is a way that someone can be connected to the net (to send emails, etc.) when "in the field" -- even in the middle of a super-combat. Killer Shrike
Re: Wireless connection laptop? It really depends on how youve defined the "net" in question. Technically, from a realistic perspective, a watered down version of HRRP is closest mechanically. Personally I usually just go with the Computer Link Perk though, with the rating of the link representing the relative bandwidith. No need to overcomplicate. MitchellS
Re: Wireless connection laptop? The detect I posted above works exactly the same way as Radio trasmit and recieve. The only difference was that I changed the description from "AM/FM" to wireless signal. All a wireless modem does is shoot a radio wave into the air which is picked up by a relay station which connects you to your ISP. From there you are connected to the internet. Without the radio wave you can't connect. There's no reason to over-think it.

Without the radio wave you can't connect. There's no reason to over-think it. This I know, and have no problem with creating. I was wondering if there anybody thought/knew if there was anything else, other than the ability to send/recieve the signal, that was necessary to give the ability to surf the net, etc. In other words, what (if anything) do you pay to represent having an ISP and account that lets you get onto the net, and would it be any different in that you'd be using a wireless (mobile) connection? I'm not worried about the mechanics of signal transmission/reception.

Personally I don't consider having internet access to be soemthing you need to pay for but if you feel that you do then I'd go with the computer link perk: ISP connection, 1 point. I personally think if you're paying for the radio you don't need to pay for the perk myself.
ghost-angel
Re: Wireless connection laptop? I generally assume that unless someone took Wealth Disad at the highest level they can afford ISP costs without much problem and have 'net access. It's certainly cheap enough. And wireless hotspots don't require the user to have an individual account since that is, essentially, the ISP you're using to access the servers. Tiree
Re: Wireless connection laptop? Well - how would you design something like a blackberry? I see it as part of the wealth advantage 0pt. You can afford a cell phone you can afford a crackberry. If all you want to do is send e-mail a crackberry is perfect! Sean Waters
Re: Wireless connection laptop? Dust Raven
Re: Wireless connection laptop? I've generally used Radio Trans/Receive or HRRP for the wireless connection. It's the same thing I use for a cell phone. And speaking of the Blackberry, the write-up of the advanced handset radio in Champions seems to be a decent writeup (with a few modifications made to the computer's programs). As for the ISP, I never worry about it. In a modern setting, I assume anyone with the mechanical capability to access the internet has access. Do you charge points for local phone service, plumbing and electrical service? Garbage removal? I don't. It's just assumed these are taken care of. As far as I'm concerned, so is internet access in any setting where character can carry that kind tech.
kave99
Re: Wireless connection laptop? iv always used mind link with a focus lim to connect to a base computer for laptop/pda type devices. in one of the 3RD ed books(an eye for an eye) thy applied a focus lim to a computer but did not divided by 5 or 10 and used HRRH. PS a hero's computer needs stealth and concealment to keep from being tract down by the the NSA or viper
Rapier
Re: Wireless connection laptop? Its just gear. Just give it to em. I imagine its gonna turn into a spoon...you know the old addage that to build a spoon in Hero System would cost you 15 pts. Certainly more points than its utility. Vondy
Re: Wireless connection laptop? If its a normal laptop with a normal wireless connection just hand it out at a "free plot mover" and wing it. It will, of course, be susceptible to everything a normal laptop with a normal wireless connection is susceptable to. Including porn searching viruses... I've read all those threads and I still don't get it. How does a spoon add up to 15 points? Wait, don't answer that. At least not here. Send me a PM if you think it will help.
