John Desmarais
Atlantis, the Antediluvian World The complete text and illustrations from this 1882 book by Ignatius Donnelly can be found here. (Just the text can be gotten from Project Gutenberg if you prefer). This book is one of the most interesting and most well crafted Atlantis theories I've read (mostly because the author, in addition to being a reasonably good writer, makes no pretense of channeling ancient beings or other mystic claptrap). Most of his findings are based on similarities between widely separated cultures that he interpreted as evidence that all civilization expanded outward from a single point (a now sunken continent in the mid-Atlantic). He cites various mythological, linguistic, ethnographic and other evidence for this theory. Any pulp game can benifit from the inclusion of a lost civilization - and this one's a classic. John Desmarais
Re: Atlantis, the Antediluvian World Can you believe this guy was a politician (Lieutenant-Governor of Minnesota, and then was elected to Congress in 1863)? Turns out that while he was a congressman he spent a great deal of time in the Library of Congress - researching stuff like this.
Steve Long
Re: Atlantis, the Antediluvian World Well, if I had to hang out a lot in Washington, that's probably where I'd spend most of my time.
Captain Obvious
Re: Atlantis, the Antediluvian World From my cursory look-over, it would appear that this was Gygax's major reference for Atlantis when he was writing the Mythus game. There are a whole lot of little details I've recognized.... Kinda gets me interested in seeing The Atlantean Age....

AlHazred
Re: Atlantis, the Antediluvian World Yeah, this was a classic of the Atlantis school of literature, which experienced a revival during the Pulp Era. Donnelly's book inspired some people who published some very popular books during the 20s and 30s. Edgar Cayce gave a reading on Atlantis in 1932. Revolt Against the Modern World, by Julius Evola (1934) was a National Socialist (Nazi) take on the Atlantis myth.

A reprint of the original (1882) edition with introduction and notes by E F Bleiler. Try http://www.doverpublications.com for more information ! Last I checked they also had copies of L. Sprague DeCamp's Lost Continents available, which does a great job of covering Donnelly and other fun writers without too much snarking. Then of course there's David Hatcher Childress, sort of a real world New Age version of that explorer guy in Champs Worldwide. His books are delightfully insane. You want dinosaur herding diamond mining Babylonians in Central Africa? He's got 'em.

st barbara
Re: Atlantis, the Antediluvian World I have six of Hatcher's "Lost Cities "books. Seven if you include "Lost Continents and The Hollow Earth" which is really just a rehash of Kafton-Minkle and Shaver. The one I am missing is "Lost Cities of Europe and Atlantis" or whatever its title is. I THINK that I added this to my last "Amazon" order. but I haven't got the books (except for "Sex and Rockets") back from that one yet. If you liked his other books, you should like that one. BTW, off topic but did he or did he not say in his book on North & Central America that in Honduras, guys don't have knife fights, they have machete fights? Something about seeing all these guys in a bar who were missing hands/arms/eyes, had hideously scarred faces, and were packing machetes. Now that's a nasty encounter for some pulp heores to run into. It's pretty good, when you realize that Hapgood's not making any outrageous claims in it. It's not like Lost Lands of the Pacific or something - he's just pointing out his evidence for the existence of a sea-faring civilization prior to the time when Antarctica was covered by ice. Extraterrestrials and the Hollow Earth aren't even mentioned in the book. Of course, that didn't stop arch-conservative dogmatic archaeologist from howling for his head.
