Re: Worth his weight in Diamond

A fairly brief search shows that diamonds have an average specific gravity of about 3.5. IIRC, a human has a specific gravity of about 1.0 (with some variety, since some people float better than others). So, you would probably figure about 350 kilos for a human-sized chunk of diamond.

diamond weighs 41.6 pounds per sq foot or 3200 kil/ cubic meter or a little over 3 times water if that helps. I don't know what flesh weighs per cubic meter but if its close to water, He'd weigh about three times what he ought to for his size.

oops didn't type fast enough. At least we came up with similar numbers

Re: Worth his weight in Diamond

Hi guys

I'm trying to come up with a character concept and I need a small amount of help.

The character is a "person" who is made out of pure Diamond. Unfortunately I don't know how much weight a man sized piece of diamond would weigh.

Any help would be appreciated.:)

The human body is roughly the same density as an equal volume of water.

At 4°C pure water has a density (weight or mass) of about 1 g/cu.cm, 1 g/ml, 1 kg/litre, 1000 kg/cu.m, 1 tonne/cu.m or 62.4 lb/cu.ft

Carbon has a density of 2.26 in the graphite form and 3.51 in the diamond form.

So it stands to reason that a man sized piece of diamond would weigh ~ 3.51 x his "normal" weight.

OTOH, Life Support Safe in High Pressure should be almost a freebie. There's approx nothing known that withstands pressure better than diamond, which is one reason for the invention of the diamond anvil cell.
