New NBC Show: Chuck

Just a heads up:

Apparently premiering tonight (just before the season 2

premier of Heroes :D ), this show has some poor schmuck

who works as an employee of "the nerd herd" (ie: the geek

squad) at your local electronics mega-store. From what I

can gather, he has eidetic memory and thru happenstance

views a set of images encrypted with "world breaking secrets".

So of course the US government assigns a uber-agent to

protect him and the secrets in his head....

Not precisely dark and gritty but it might make a reasonable

source for ideas for a less serious set of adventures.

I enjoyed this as well. It was fun, funny and I liked the characters. I'm not sure if the premise can maintain for an entire season, but I am also looking forward to next week. Rumor has it that Lost will be on Monday at 7 starting in Feb. so I can't become too big a fan of Chuck.

Re: New NBC Show: Chuck

I'm never home on Monday nights. I caught the Chuck and Journeyman pilots online since they were out as free streaming previews (on Yahoo and MSN respectively). I'll be hitting the NBC website today in the hopes that they're still streaming Heroes the next day like they did last year.

Chuck was cute. I thought it was funny that I didn't choke at all on "random data embedded itself in the hero's subconscious in a productive way" but had a hard time getting past "You emailed how much data from a Blackberry in a ten second burst?" I kind of hoping they're going with the idea that turns out Chucks brain's organic analysis comes up with stuff the computer doesn't, and thus they keep feeding him new information. Otherwise his "top secret" stuff will stop being useful after a bit.

Journeyman was better than I expected. It's hard to say how good it was, though, because my expectations were really low. I think I like their process of multiple small adjustments as opposed to Quantum Leap's single targeted moment.

Chuck was really good; my wife liked it as much as I did. And she's MUCH pickier than I am, so that's a good recommendation.

Whether they can keep it up or not, I don't know, but I'll keep watching.

Journeyman was good. And the ending ROCKED.

I liked the show up to that point; that last line convinced me I will be watching it again.

Re: New NBC Show: Chuck

On the whole I'd give it a 3 out of 5. There were some

"plot logic" issues as some have previously mentioned

(the compressed yet seemingly multi-hours worth of data

in a burst transmission, the speed of the virus effect on the

bomb....etc) but on the whole enjoyable. And it's always

fun to see Adam Baldwin as Jayne....I mean, as a uber-agent

assassin.

Best stunt ? The "I'll throw my knife at the button and duck

behind the barricade" gag.

One of the ways I judge a show like this is if I "can hear the

dice rolling". Which is to say, does it remind me of/can I see

this as a gaming session. And on reflection, parts of last nights

episode did make me think back to some of our gaming groups

adventures in the days of Espionage/Danger International... :D

Didn't catch Journeyman. Ended up on a re-run of Star Trek:

Enterprise on SciFi instead. From the consensus it sounds as

tho' I might have to give it a look next week.

Personally I'd take this show as a wonderful example of how the action genre doesn't have to be dark and gritty, nor does it have to devolve into full-on parody in order to have comedy. It's a fun, comic romp through the uber-spy sub-genre, playing with the tropes that we've become familiar with and never quite taking itself completely seriously, but never sacrifices the very human element without which it would devolve into mindless farce.

Re: New NBC Show: Chuck

So I find myself thinking that, once I get home and have access

to my copy of HD3, I might take a run at generating Sarah from

this show. Now granted, we've only seen 1 hour worth of her, but

in that hour we saw a fair bit of what skills she seems to have:

**HTH (I'm thinking Kung Fu, possibly Mantis style, going by her

fight with the other agents at the club).

** CSL's for the above mentioned HTH

**Acrobatics

** Breakfall

** WF: Blades (and sharp pointy hair thingies)

** CSL's with Blades (and sharp pointy..... :) )

** PRE (usable to "not freak out" only)

** Seduction

** Conversation

** Stealth

** Lockpicking

** Combat Driving

Her disads are probably pretty straight forward too:

** Distinctive Features: Blonde Babe

** Subject To Orders

** Secret ID (or whatever the appropriate terminology is...

I don't have my books at hand and I can't recall what the

name is for "dangerous secret" in DC terms)

Opinions/anyone else have anything to add ?

And just an FYI, apparently there will be a re-broadcast of the

first episode this coming Saturday evening...

Re: New NBC Show: Chuck

Last nights episode once again made me pine for a TIVO (or

generic equivalent)....

When the Dr gave Chuck the test and Chuck spouted

off the various "random bits of info"....I heard some possible

gaming scenario ideas there: "Benedictine assasins at the

Vatican"..."Plan 5..."...etc.

:sneaky:

Re: New NBC Show: Chuck

Easily my favorite part was when Chuck said that he knew who shot down Oceanic Flight 815. I was shocked that there was a reference to Lost on an NBC show. I miss Lost.

D'oh !!! I knew I recognized that reference from somewhere. Not

that I have ever watched much (if any) Lost but..... :)

And of course, since (as far as I know) both shows are on Monday

nights, I'm not terribly suprised that a "we'll shoot you down"

reference might be made regarding another networks show.
