Millennium City: What would your Characters think?

For those of you who are playing in, or at least have Millennium City; What would/do your characters think of it?

I'm the GM, so I don't get to play so much, but I started wondering what some of my old Characters (and current NPCs) would think if they visited or lived in the "City of the Future"? Do you think certain types would be more likely to love it or hate it? Would High Tech heroes consider the darn place Nirvana? Would Mystics wince? Would 4 out of 5 Bricks claim they prefer to hit Foxbat with an MC automobile over any other city's mode of transport? ;)

As a setting it’s just too clean, too perfect. I get an underlying since of control. The government controls too much. “You can only have a car in our city if we can control it by remote control; really it’s for your safety.†Too much like a Brave New world. We made every thing perfect for you, now do what you’re told. This is America I want to drive my own gas guzzling car, eat read meat and go to XXX clubs. I don’t want some camera taking my photo and sending me a ticket for jay-walking or spitting on the side walk. Maybe I am taking it too far. But you get the idea. There is some thing inherently wrong a setting that clean.

As for my characters, most would not be there, the setting is not right. One or two other would be there just to see how much trouble they could get in. I do have one character that I put together as an ECO Terrorist that would have a blast there…literally. :D

If I may be permitted a movie analogy (Demolition Man): Millenium City is to the San Angeles Metroplex as I am to Edgar Friendly. In other words...

"You got that right. You see, according to Cockteau's plan, I'm the enemy because I like to think. I like to read, I'm into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I'm the kind of guy that could sit in a greasy spoon and wonder gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs or the side order of gravy fries. I want high cholesterol. I would eat bacon and butter and buckets of cheese. OK. I want to smoke Cuban cigars the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-O all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why, because I might suddenly feel the need to. OK? Pal, I've seen the future. Know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his pajamas, sipping a banana-broccoli shake, singing 'I'm the Oscar Meyer wiener'. You live up top, you live how he wants. Your other choice: come down here and maybe starve to death."

Millenium City is too clean, too perfect, and too dull. I won't even start in on what some of my characters would think.

I think working at where the corruption hides would be an interesting campaign. Rip through the shiney veneer and expose the decomposing flesh within!

Lets see.....

My two primary Champs characters:

Ballistic - A supermage that used to be a supersuit ex cop (don't ask). He'd like it at first glance, because of the "clean" aspect mentioned, but as days wore on, he would become more and more frustrated with the lack of personal choice on things. He'd want to drive his own car. He was cop to help things become safe, but he knew what was too far. He would consider MC too far.

Black Cat - A classic philosophy spoutin, mystic powers martial artist. She would like it most of the time. She is a very self controlled and centered person. She could be very comfortable there, with the caviat that there is somewhere nearby that one could escape the control and let one's hair down. She would think, as a city fine- as a country or world, way too much.

That city setting just begs for the traditional three way conflict...

Villains on one side

government and "law abiding on the other

rebellious anti-government crimefighters on the other.

basically use all the "perfect city" stuff as the official party line, the official truth, and so forth in a darned near Night Watch level...

and of course the heroes in between sometimes working with either of the other sides...

most of my previous heroes would be on the third side, opposed to the gummint side and the villains. though there was Captain justice, who thought of himself as true blue american hero who might well be thrilled to be on the side of right along with fat juicy government payroll and good press.

$ where my mouth is

I best put down how I think my own characters would react...

LONE STAR: While he'd admire how the "Lennies" pulled themselves up from the ashes of Detroit, Lone Star would think the city was too wired and tries too hard. He wouldn't care much for how automated everything is as he's a 'do it yourself' kind of guy.

SLAMMER: One side of Millennium City is pure glamour and glitz with a cutting edge feel. Slammer would love it. He's a natural ham with a public ID and can bound around instead of taking a car if he wants, so hey, MC might be his kind of town! While he doesn't 'charge' for his heroing services, he'd soon be matching Cavalier for living large on limelight... or is it laser light?

SURGE: Well, Surge is in a different setting/Universe, but if he were in Millennium City he'd probably have mixed feelings. As an artist with scientific training, he'd marvel at the technology and love the layout of the city. He might be a bit nervous about the potiential for abuse OF that Tech though. Overall he'd like it.

WILDCARD: Hey, the town's got casinos. Wildcard would love it. He'd be working the shadows, and play a tad rougher than some other heroes of the town, but that's fine with him- Everyone needs a niche. He might gripe about his cards suddenly not being as big an edge "When the cops tech comes close to matching the heroes, it just spoils the mood for me." He'd also probably raise a little hell just to thumb his nose at the rigidity of the town :)

SUNBURN (of Metaguard): Sunburn would love it. I mean, it is the ultimat 'phenox' story. And he has always been called a 'boy scout'.

THE DAMSEL: My crossdressing gagetear from New Orleans doesen't realy think of Milimumen City much. Seeing that his city is New Orleans.

I don't think the setting is too clean or too perfect at all. After all you still have the mafia, you still have Viper and you have PSI running around trying to weasel thier way into any type of power that they can. Crime is still prevalent, it just has to tinker with a small chip in it's getaway cars now. Racism and intolerance is still there despite the change to Millenium City from Detroit [not that it'll be touched on much in any game I run, those topics make me uncomfortable and I'd be likely running a Silver Age campaign.] Sure there's a little bit more control but it's not exactly Orwellian now is it?

Anyway, here are the basic reactions of various characters I play:

Twilight is pretty much a street level crimefighter, who carries a crossbow with trick arrows and various gadgets most notably the goggles he wears. He flies around on a rocket sled similar to the Green Goblin's. He'd be impressed with how the people of the city managed to set thier lives straight after the destruction of thier city, finding it quite inspiring. He'd love all the technology and such, but recognise the troubles still prevalent in the city. He'd like it there, but realise that it isn't perfect.

Friedan Retter realises this place has shadows just like any other city, thus Millenium City can provide a home for him just as well as any other city can. Sure it looks brighter on the outside, but there is still scum and corruption for him to root from the shadows and destroy for the good of the people who live here. All in all he probably wouldn't have any special attachment to Millenium City though he would definetly defend it with his life if the situation required it.

Gamarye [formally Kid Mystic]: "It's a nice place really, good restaurants, excellent scenery and all. If Vibora Bay didn't need me so much, I might stay here sometime when it wasn't being attacked by things man wasn't meant to know." *goes off to battle the Crowns of Krim*

Various reactions

Officer Kira Midori: She's a cop from a Utopian future, so Millenium City looks like a step in the right direction to her.

Elijah Gaunt, Witch Hunter from an apocalyptic future: He'd admire all the neat technology. It's a pity it will all be destroyed in a few years when the Wikans conquer the world.

The Hanged Lord: Believes himself to be the reincarnation of the Norse god Odin. Would despise Millenium City as an unnatural attempt to control fate.

FWIW,

SKJAM!
