Wait, he's on our side?

Inspired by the poker in Hell thread.

You and your gang are fighting a major demon who is trying to take over the world and turn it into Hell. You are losing or having a really bad time. Then he shows up. Lucifer. Satan. The Devil. You know, the big guy himself. He offers to help. Why? That's easy. He wants to rule, not that #%$@# upstart. Do you accept?

Volt - Very reluctantly. At least the big guy has a reason Volt understands. "Reign in Hell" vs "Serve in heaven" and all that. Pride would not allow it. Would watch him very carefully, he is a deceiver after all. Try to have a lawyer (Wait, aren't they all on his side?) write up a contract if there is time.

Olorin - Sigh and think "Not again.". Has done this sort of deal before. Would pull out a pre-written contract, change a bit and have him sign it. Then work with him. Watch him very closely.

Black Tiger - Swear so much he might even be impressed. Then go Volt's route. However, he'd stick to him like glue.

Futurian - "Oh wow. Ummm.... Hang on while I get a good lawyer." Under breath "Oh crud, oh crud, oh crud. Good lawyer. Yeah. Right." Go Volt's route, and actually watch the guy and not forget for a change.

Leadman. No. Never. Would start praying and maybe try to find an exorcist. Or all of them.

"I can lay you out and fill your mouth with your mother's feces; or, we can talk."

- Lucifer, The Prophecy

There are times when you just can't say know. Of the different character's I play I think only one might be able to turn down that offer.

Re: Wait, he's on our side?

This being a 'save the world for all time but lose your soul to do it' situation, anybody who can even think of using the word 'hero' has to say yes. It's your soul vs 6 Billion souls after all.

BUT and it's a big one... If Lucifer himself appears, one must assume that the creator (if we're still working within the momo-god framework) must know this is going on. Thus, if the bargain is freely accepted there may be a 'get-out-of-jail-free card' played on you at some point in time.

Deuce would accept, provided Mr. Scratch immediately returns to the abyss from which he came after the evil was defeated, and any mortal souls "liberated" would not automatically be his. No attempting to tempt- get on with the job. If he was truly serious about defeating his rival, Lucifer would accept.

One of his team might be outraged for a while, but having met the Infernal One first-hand (she was once on his team) Retribution would probably get over it. On the other hand, she'd be very keen on keeping an eye on him for the Light Side.

Deuce remembers the words of one W. Churchill: "If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons."

Unless of course said hero believes that an intrinsically evil act is never good regardless of the circumstances, or is smart enough to know that the Devil is even better at twisting words to suit his purposes than genie are.

Mr. Nobody, being the latter, wouldn't make a deal with Satan, even under orders from the shadowy and officially nonexistent government agency he works for.

My 16 year old literally coffee-fueled speedster, Orange Blur, who believes the former, wouldn't make that deal either.

Oh, and if you think a lawyer would help then chew on this, can you prove that this whole thing hasn't been set up as a ruse to steal your hero's soul? The moment you make the deal, Satan will laugh, order the demon to stop, and go home with your soul in his pocket.

Super-Pimp would think "Sheeet! Rock and a hard place time". He would reluctantly accept the help. The first thing he would do after taking The Prince of Darknesses offer would be to telepathically tell his assistant Moxie Johnson to get on the horn and contact every hero in her roll-o-dex and tell them to get their butts to where ever the battle is taking place. Super-Pimp does not trust the worst of the Big Bads to leave once he's cleared the field.

During the battle, Super-Pimp would hold back and take all recoveries needed to be at full force once Old Scratch finishes the job. He would also concentrate on protecting the innocent from any and all collateral damage, knowing that two powers from Hell won't be bothered to worry about where the buildings fall.

Badger- not super religious, but his mother was a devout Catholic, and he still basically follows Catholicism. Would refuse, regardless. Would consider death a better option.

Frosty Bob- Ehh, even if he wasnt immortal, it isnt like he'll end up in heaven, anyhow. :straight:

Re: Wait, he's on our side?

You know, my reading of this scenario isn't a "deal with a devil" situation, so much as a "alliance of necessity." Lucifer isn't offering the power to win in exchange for souls, he's just showing up for the big fight with Asmodeus or whatnot.

Which is still a very risky scenario, but its not the *same* kind of risk.

Re: Wait, he's on our side?

Vitus would get another migraine headache. He's already been tempted by demonic Princes, who made him a very tempting offer in return for the chance to get their staff of office back once Aura was restored. He considered it at length. Being extremely annoyed with his teammates at the time probably didn't help. Fortunately the demonic Lowerachy soon had bigger problems to worry about and the deal with Vitus got put on the backburner.

As far as Earth being turned into Hell... So? It's not Aurza being turned into Hell. On the other hand, Aura very nearly WAS, and Vitus would be forced to admit to himself that as unspeakably annoying as he find the planet and it's inhabitants, he really probably *should* do something to save it. Even if this does mean an alliance with a Demon Lord. When his usual response to anything demonic is "Kill it. Kill it with (holy) Fire".

So, once again Vitus would have to run through all these options and eventually decide on some course of action that will no doubt horrify his teammates and further enhance his reputation as Somebody To Avoid. Hey ho.

Zero would need new pants.

Re: Wait, he's on our side?

Just to let everyone know, this was not a direct "sell your soul to get his help" in spite of the lawyer references. More like an alliance you'd rather not have to make - since you could not trust him. The lawyers were to make sure (as best they could) that no shenanigans were going on. I let it go this far because I was curious. I like what once said about selling your soul, but getting a pass because you did it for selfless reasons.
