Alien Wars/PA Hero. Any thoughts?

Hi guys,

I'm starting up a game that is going to be an Alien Wars meets Post Apocalypse Hero campaign.

The basic premise is that the PC's on on a frontier world that falls early to the Xenovores and quickly ends up deep behind enemy lines. The PC's would be survivors of the invasion/bombardment and must now take to the hills and begin trying to survive and fight back against the Xenovore invaders and other human survivors fighting out for food and supplies.

Over the long term I would like them to take the fight back against the aliens, and then when it turns out that the Xenovores are using the world as a major staging point/tactical point for the war it will be up to these rag-tag survivors to try and disrupt the aliens plans in order to allow the Terran Military a chance to win in a big looming battle.

Inspirations include: Living Steel, Robotech (the 3rd generation series with the Invid ruling earth), Red Dawn, Battlefield: Earth (the book, not the movie).

So does anyone have any advice/opinions/ideas/thoughts/warnings/other inspirations I should look at?

Some other random thoughts and ideas:

-Xenovores start terraforming (or should that be Xenoforming?) the planet and it's inhabitants to match their own homeworld.

-Eventually have the PC's get off the planet and assist the Military in their search for the Xeno's homeworld, given the PC's now expertise in all things Xeno from their long up close battle with them.

from red storm rising

the parts about the air force weatherman Lt in Iceland after the russians invade and take over

while not an alien invasion or PA,it does give a vivid journey of a small band trying to survive in hostile territory after their world comes crashing down around them

Regarding "terraforming," remember that one of the major reasons the Xenovores keep expanding, is that unrestrained use of their bio-nanite manufacturing processes rapidly strip conquered worlds of resources. It could add to the PA feel of the setting if you describe bio-nanites gradually spreading across the landscape like some repulsive fungus, consuming the food and salvageable supplies that the rebels need to survive and fight back.

As for further inspiration, you might benefit from these Alien Wars-set adventures published in Digital Hero:

THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY: Can three races that hate each other set aside their differences long enough to defend their planet in this Alien Wars adventure? DH 20, PAGE 33

YOUR HOROSCOPE FOR: CAPRICORN: This Alien Wars adventure lands your Star Hero characters on an icy lake world full of Xenovores. DH 21, PAGE 13

For potentially broader campaigning, consider this licensed PDF adventure for Alien Wars: Rescue at Karadonna.

And you can always steal from the masterpiece of PA cinema -- The Road Warrior. The PCs must escort a hoverbus full of refugees across the nano-infected wastes to the only star port left in human hands, all the time pursued by Xenovore forces!

I was in a game that used Beldonna V (I think) in pretty much this way. The PCs were hanging out for different reasons waiting to be shipped off-planet when the sheet hit the fan. Check out the posts on Herocentral.com if you're interested. The GM made it more or less a 'one shot' (in PBP terms it was probably over a year or so) and he did a very good job at it.

Also I'm currently structuring a Terran Empire game combining PA, AW and TE based on Tetsuo from Worlds of Empire. There is even some good enemies for this in Scourges of the Galaxy. It will be a PBP game as well so I don't want to give too much away in case there are potential players reading this. The TE part could easily be removed, but I don't know off hand what Tetsuo's hand was in the Alien Wars or if it was even annexed yet...

It's not entirely related to your original question but it might be interesting to do a PA/Alien Wars crossover directly. That is the Xenovores make it to earth sometime in the near future.

For whatever reason, the Xenovore technology being a little primitive or another alien race coming on the scene and destroying most of the Xenovore fleet or even the Xenovore fleet being a lost expedition, they don't conquer earth. But they do destroy it. Xenovore motheship crashing to earth scattering the Xenovores to the four corners of the earth and raining their technology over the wasted landscape.

If another alien race had a hand in this, they might not care about earth and are happy to crash thousands of Xenovores on earth and leave them stranded there. They may even lose some of their ships there. Along with Xenovores you might have Rigillians, Fex or some other race stranded on earth. Move the timeline a couple of hundred years forward and viola! Alien Apocalyptic.

As I recall there was a similar premise behind the Doom novels of the mid 90s or so. That the "demons" where just another battle in a backwater system in a war two major alien races had been having for millenniums. Why they were demons and weird occult symbolism was involved was that such forces were appropriate. Overall the books were pretty bad. They involved mutant Mormons taking over the earth, an alien who looked like two "Magilla Gorillas joined at the hip" and the protagonist converting monsters to do his bidding as he had to repeat everything he'd done in the previous two books. Ugh.

What Times and Days are you playing?

Where are you gaming?

Do you have room for another player?

QM

Well it will be in Kits since the 3 of us involved all live with in about 10 minutes of each other & we definitely have room for another player, but... This is going to be more of a pick up game.

The three of us have noticed recently that we end up having the same nights free fairly often so we decided to get a game going but it's going to be a different night week to week depending on when we can "get away from" girlfriends, wives, etc... two of us have gf's that are waitresses so they work nights a lot, but the shifts change week to week and our other buddy is married, but he can get a night out with the guys with little notice. So the night and time of the game will vary week to week depending on when we can all hang out for 3-4 hours at a time.

Re: Alien Wars/PA Hero. Any thoughts?

No discussion, or game, about the xenoforming of a planet under the player's feet is complete without some examination of the War against the Chtorr series.

Cant remember the author, etc... but the basic story is that earth is being xenoformed under the human inhabitants by aliens, whose 'invasion' is just that.. the xenoforming. Some really neat stuff in there (and I think an RPG spin-off at some point).

Check out the wikipedia entry.
