Catalog of Fantasy RPG Settings

Killer Shrike

Recommended Posts

As part of my efforts to collate influences and source material, I'm starting to catalog fantasy rpg settings on the High Fantasy Wiki

http://www.killershrike.info/AllPages.aspx?Cat=Settings

I've only just begun this effort, but the goal is to have a page for any fantasy rpg setting of size and note. Obviously I havent played in every single fantasy rpg setting and may not even be aware of some, so I'm asking for my fellow forum members to speak up and forward their favorite fantasy rpg settings.

To be useful I need to know:

The world's actual name

What the world is generally known as, commercially

Some history / defining characteristics

At least one link to a source for more specific information, ideally two links - a wikipedia entry and a dedicated site.

If its written is such a way that it can be directly copy and pasted into the wiki, so much the better.

Thanks!

Re: Catalog of Fantasy RPG Settings

Do homebrew settings count for this effort? Or just published ones? By the look of the Wiki' date=' it's just published stuff, but I wanted to get clarification.[/quote']

Published only, and preferably either well known or notable for something influential.

Hey Jay; long time no see. Any chance I can get the following info on each of these?

The world's actual name

What the world is generally known as, commercially

Some history / defining characteristics

Even better, if you wanted to do me a favor, if you signed up for the wiki I'll make you an Admin and you can add the pages and what not. :D

Re: Catalog of Fantasy RPG Settings

Sure, I signed up.

But be warned it sometimes takes me a while to get around to things compared to you sleepless energy dynamo types.

Awesome. You are admin'd up. It might be best to go in order of most well known to least well known so that if it takes you a while to complete its not as big of deal.

Re: Catalog of Fantasy RPG Settings

Kamarathin

A world where magic is rare and not fully understood, where the nations are filled with multiple cultures and detailed religions, where the pursuit of self is more interesting than the pursuit of monsters.

Even put in a plug for you.

By the way, what would be a good tag line for the setting similar to the pattern most of the other settings follow?

Kamarathin, World of ?

Athas

Dark Sun

In a desert world scarred by an ancient magical war, you must survive burning sands, savage Elf nomads, and the machinations of the Sorcerer-Kings who rule the last City-States.

Re: Catalog of Fantasy RPG Settings

I would highly suggest David Weber's War God series setting of Norfressa

The first 2 books are available free from the baen site in HTML, RTF and M$ reader formatting

Some of the most enjoyable fantasy reading I've had in years

Is it a book series or a roleplaying game?

Re: Catalog of Fantasy RPG Settings

Its book series

Ive been tinkering around with porting it over to Rolemaster for a few months to see if I liked it

Over all its one of the best fantasy settings Ive run across is while

No worries; if its a series of books it would belong under "Authors" vs "Settings".

Hmm, let me check my LibraryThing...

  • The Atlantean Age (Fantasy Hero)
  • Castle Falkenstein - High Adventure in the Steam Age (urban fantasy)
  • Children of the Sun (big hardcover, may be scifi, need to check)
  • Empire of the Petal Throne: rules for fantasy adventures and campaigns
  • The end (although this is post apocalyptic urban fantasy)
  • The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen
  • GateWar: Believable Fantasy Role-Playing in the World of Vinya
  • Harnmaster (Harn Fantasy Role Playing System)
  • Lankhmar, City of Adventure (D&D)
  • Mega Role Playing System Fantasy Edition (obscure hardcover)
  • Mouse Guard: Role-Playing Game (Mouse Guard): The Role-playing Game
  • Murphy's World (humorous, may be scifi - I need to re-read it)
  • Tales from the Floating Vagabond (humorous)
  • Tales of Gargentihr
  • Theatrix presents Ironwood
  • Thieves' World: Game Master's Guide for Sanctuary
  • Tuala Morn (Fantasy Hero)
  • The Turakian Age (Fantasy Hero)
  • The Valdorian Age (Fantasy Hero)
  • Victoriana (urban fantasy)
  • Warp World

I'll enter them when I have the time.
