Re: A Morbane Redeemed?

I've have a campaign coming up and while thinking of a concept of a Morbane fighting for redemption. I need a bit of help coming up with a background... why would a Morbane, an evil to the core black magician, suddenly turn his back on DEMON and wish to save his soul... ideas?

several possibilities :

As Siberian Tiger pointed it

"see the light", "born again"

- While summoning a demon, the morbane accidently draw the attention of a powerful angelic being. The angel easliy destroys the morbane's demon and shines its light upon the morbane; the morbane is transfigured (spiritual transform in game terms).

- variant : the morbane forces a white magician to summon an angel so the morbane would destroy it and gain prestige. The morbane loses the fight ... the angel shows him the light. Sanctity and hilarity ensue.

- variant : the morbane has been possessed by an angel (liturgic radiation incident) and is "corrupted" by its purity.

- variant : the morbane is bitten by a radioactive angel.

the prupose of the plot: conversion by a "angel/holy spirit/white lighter/etc..."

the opposite "see the true darkness"

The morbane came to see what really happens to the damned (suffering and so on) and realized he will doomed at the end (literally) no matter how mucj power he gains in his life. By fear of damnation, he tries to redeem himself.

the purpose of the plot : give the morbane a fear deep enough to have him realize what it is to be damned.

"fight fire with (hell)fire"

The morbane actually always seeked to fight evil but he tried to fight it with its own weapons, infiltrated DEMON ... and get corrupted by its philosophy. he came to his mind again and, desperate about his failure tries to redeem himself.

the purpose of the plot : The morbane has to realize he's in DEMON (self-hypnotized maybe) to actually fight the organization.

"no more evil in me"

The morbane X has tried to merge with a demon (see Morningstar in CKC). the ritual went bad and the other morbanes had to un-merge the two beings (demon and morbane X) but doing so, they took off all the evil from the morbane's soul (which goes to the demon' "soul"). The morbane cannot think of evil anymore

The purpose of the plot : the morbane has been "amputated" of his evil.

i'm sure there's plenty of other ideas

Think of it this way:

"Evil" isn't a club that you join, even if there are real absolute good and evil in your campaign world. Even serial killers will almost always find some way to deny or justify their actions, to see themselves as in the right. Ask yourself how and why he joined Demon in the first place. Maybe Demon recruits through small cult and new-age groups or self-help 12 step programs.

The classic path:

Maybe your Morbane started out hanging with a new-age crowd for access to drugs and women (or men), then discovered his (or her) tallents. He worked his way up the ranks, always looking for more power. He was ordered to do things he didn't like (animal sacrifice, ritual scarification, ritual torture, ritual murder, etc.) but he did them, always chasing that promise. He felt he needed that power, and he clamped down on any sympathy he felt for his victims. Over time he began to see that his masters felt the same kind of contempt for him that he felt for his marks and lackeys. He realized that those above him would never give him more than the minimum they had to, that they'd use or kill him the same way he'd used and killed others. He realized that their masters were the same, all the way up to the Kings of Edom that Demon thought they could control. Angry, depressed, feeling betrayed, he hits bottom. At that point, he knows he has to get out.

At this point you can go for "true redemption" or "enemy of my enemy." In "true redemption" the Morbane is asked to do something he sees as True Evil (killing a child, killing someone he loves). He rebels, and (if an NPC) goes to the heroes for help. In "enemy of my enemy" he has no true desire to reform; perhaps he just likes the world the way it is, and doesn't think that a world ruled by alien extra-dimensional elder gods (Demon's default goal) would be an improvement. He'd rather play in the world the way it is. In this case he talks a good line about seeking redemption, but is in fact looking for an angle to get the money / power / pleasure he wants. If he can do it without murdering anyone, even better.

Redemption

Maybe after a close call, in which he almost becomes a sacrifice to/victim of an evil being the morbanes are dealing with, he realizes that the evil beings he is dealing with only sees him as a source of nourishment/energy/dark power, and he wants to be more than a puppet.

In a fight with a super group, the mentalist hero uses mind control on him, with the command to 'repent.' Or, the same hero uses his/her powers to make the morbane see the effect his actions have on others, and the little bit of guilt he has left forces him to try and redeem himself.

Or maybe he fails the inner circle somehow, and they are after him to kill/sacrifice/destroy him, and he has to flee. While on the run, he realizes without the power of the other morbanes and/or the inner circle, he is threatened by all the evil beings he and Demon have dealt with in the past, so he tries to change his ways, hoping for protection from God.

Hope these help or at least offer a springboard for your own ideas.

Two varients on the same idea.

The Morbane fights and kills a being of good (angel or super who is known for their piety and spiritual purity) and as they fall the Good decides that it has found a new host, the morbane !

As above with the Morbane destroying something good and then their long dormant conscience awakes revolted by what the Morbane has just done. It forces the Morbane to re-examine its life and turn over a new leaf. Vampire uses a similar sort of idea for Vampires seeking Golconda, spiritual peace.

The Morbane has spent his life gaining power, an amoral, uncaring sociopath, happy to do anything to anyone to get what he wants. As mentioned, he's found ways to justify what he does to himself - he doesn't see himself as "evil".

But then, somehow, he is forced to confront his actions. The barriers and defences between himself and his deeds are broken away. My favorite idea is that some kind of supernatural vigilante type (e.g. Ghost Rider) does this to him.

Now he is unable to see what he did as anything other than evil. Finally confronted with his evil, he is now trying to somehow make amends...

I got one. Not sure if anyone else mentioned this...

What if the Morbane was cursed by a competitor? The curse prevents the user from commiting any evil act (some type of transformation that adds Psych disads). This would also open up a bunch of role-playing situation if the curse is removed. Could be fun... :)
