This thread is to come up with modern 6e Writeups for the Characters that appeared on the Original 1st Ed and 2nd Champions Books (inc Champions II and Champions III). Those characters belonged to the players of the first Champions Campaigns. One of Which was run by the Original Author George MacDonald. The team was called the Guardians. We have seen the Villains from his campaign, some of which are still part of the current Champions Universe. Those Original Player Characters were only seen in the Artwork or mentioned in Credits of those original books. We did get to see a version of those characters in Heroic Publishing's (Published by Comico) Champions Comic. Many of the Original characters from the Champions books appeared in that comic. Some did not, I imagine that getting everyone to sign off on allowing someone else to write about Their character was off putting.

 

The Idea of "The Champions" being a Hero Team tied to the IP and property of Hero Games came to us in 4th edition. I am sure that the Original Authors would have wanted to publish their team as a campaign, but getting the IP to everyone's PC could be pretty tricky. Perhaps they didn't even bother, wanting instead to come up with something slightly different.

 

So the characters as far as our small group can tell from the covers and their appearance in Heroic Publishing Comics is(reposted from Mr Vimes' OP):

 

  • Dove - "A man traped inside an alien suit of battle armor. He is best known for his force field and high Presence with the limitations Only For Attack/Only To Look Heroic. Dove got lots of press and fan mail."
  • Flare - "She is an energy projector (light), and one of four children made as a Nazi experiment in the years after World War 2 (with Nazis hiding out in South America). One draw back to the process is that she starts to age faster than a normal human."
  • Gargoyle - "Brick who took a chemical which slowed him to change (same chemical as the villain Gremlin)."
  • Goliath - "He was called Giant in the Champions Comic Book. Goliath found a mystical belt made by the Gods of Olympus, and granted the ability to change sizes. Was, in reality, the second Goliath (first one fought in World War 2)."
  • Icestar - "Heroic mutant energy projector (Ice). Killed by Doctor Destroyer at the Battle Of Detroit. Known for his relaxed manner, is a practical joker and a lady's man. Unknown to him, his girlfriend, Cynthia Woo, is secretly his arch enemy, Madam Synn."
  • Marksman - "Martial Artist/Gadgeteer. Marksman has a mutant ability which reduces his aging. His weapons are Sonic Pistols. "
  • Rose - "Believed to be the reincarnation of her grandmother (she was born the same day her grandmother died), Rose is a mentalist with a mystical bent. When she uses her powers there is a smell of roses. In love with Marksman."

 

PS I believe that is Gargoyle in Civvies that is walking in on the Training session on the Original cover to Champs II.

 

Also what powerlevels are you wanting to build the characters to? From what I have been told the Original Campaigns started at DC 8 which is less than most people play now. How about DC 10, 16-25Def (half Resistant), 62pts max pts per Power? That way Rose could still have her Teleportation.

Originally I was thinking we could try and keep them at "starter" levels and base them on 400 pts, but I don't see that as easily doable. So, yeah, DC 10-12 with 60-70pts max sounds about right.

We've got next to nothing to go on regarding Titan except that he:

  • Is trapped inside his Alien Armor
  • Uses Force Fields
  • Has a high Presence that is only to look heroic (unless that comes from Dove, who we thought might be Tiatn)

 

As a result, he is using no Foci (because he can't take the armor off) and has most of his powers based on Force Fields. For the rest, I went with a slightly twisted view of being trapped in the armor, this suit will not let him die. It gives him an array of skills to help him survive and life support and an on-board computer.

 

This is a rough draft. Constructive criticism is welcome.

Humm...I only have the vagest ideal about Scarlet. What we DO know is:

 

1) She is a flying energy projector.

 

2) Her name is Scarlet. This might be a clue to the nature of the energy released. It is certently not because she has red hair, or a red costume.

 

3) She might be hunted by Holacaust(sp?), as it is her in his arms in one of the covers.

 

For Dove, I have no ideal. Angel in the flesh?

 

Oh, and Golieth(sp) does have a minor Energy Blast in adition to growth.

Oh by the way...my background for the characters (either borrowed from comic or created whole cloth)

 

Marksman - latest in a long line of slow aging/preternaturally healthy adventurers; military background, esoteric martial arts and an inventor with a taste for sonic based gadgets. Single, has a competent (if somewhat frustrating) DNPC in his still-exploring-the-world father; Hunteds include VIPER (a default) and Malice (from the comic)

 

Rose - Occult Investigator with mental powers, perhaps reincarnation of her grandmother, loves Marksman - loathes Malice, tends towards feisty behavior.

 

Flare - Nazi experiment; has siblings who have powers (Hunteds/DNPCs); ages quickly, naive and childish - physical maturity is a curse/blessing

 

Icestar - mutant, self-absorbed hero. Little sister is icicle. Arch nemesis is secretly his girlfriend - gonna say he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

 

Gargoyle - Reporter turned monster (but can change back) - rivalry with Jimmy Duggan (Tabloid Super Reporter/JJJameson knockoff), DNPC love interest.

 

Goliath - College football player turned archaeologist. Married the daughter of the original Goliath. Family man, normal guy.

Aricobra - Military History obsessed inventor. Uses flight suit/powered armor; I see him as more like Marvel's MACH-V than Ironman. Hunted by VIPER who'd love his technology.

Flare disappears, Dove is replacement

 

Flare is found, rescued from her siblings and the Nazis that raised them; Dove returns to his Solo career.

I lost touch with the hobby for many years and, when I rediscovered it, I remember reading in one book that, "Icestar died in the Battle of Detroit" and being sort of vaguely bummed out by that.

 

On an unrelated note, I also remember wondering as a kid in the mid-1980s about what racial group Marksman was from. He was one of my favorite characters. But as Mark Williams drew him on the RPG games books, sometimes he looked caucasian (with 1970s "Welcome Back Kotter" hair) and other times he looked to me to be African American. The Grenadier miniature looked African American to me. But then in the comic book his look seemed to 'change around' too.

 

In my mind anyway, this wasn't really a "Vin Diesel" conundrum, as in someone who has a very multi-cultural aspect. To me, my confusion about Marksman was about the artwork not giving the character a consistent look.

I always assumed he was multi-racial. I was actually happy to see that.
