Christopher
Or rather a quantum computer so powerfull, that you need normal computer the size of the Universe to get the same processing power: http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2012/04/26/3489504.htm
Guest dr. strangelove
Re: A brain the size of the universe... Very cool idea, but I still can't help thinking that someday, inevitably, we're going to create a sufficient amount of data processing power that it will result in emergent AI inevitably. It would be interesting to see how an emergent AI would react to the world we've made.

It would be interesting to see how an emergent AI would react to the world we've made. I don't believe that's possible. I think you'd have to intentionally design for artificial intelligence. From what we know of the human brain, it didn't just get complex enough in some generic fashion to achieve self-awareness. It's a collection of "modules" doing specific jobs, the sum total of which results in human intelligence. There's some degree of self-awareness in other creatures, too, but their self-awareness is also not just a result of "enough processing power". It's the end result of evolutionary pressures that made such a trait advantageous. Computers don't evolve. They're designed to fulfill specific objectives. If we want AI, we're going to have to design it.
Ternaugh
Re: A brain the size of the universe... Our computers once begun with relays the size of a hand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z4_%28computer%29 Let's see how far the miniaturization goes with that. There are serious obstacles to overcome with miniaturization. For example, standard flash memory (NAND memory) gets progressively shorter usable lifespans as density increases. CPUs have to be carefully designed now to prevent electron tunneling from corrupting nearby data lines and transistors, and the issue will get only worse as things get smaller.
