Michael Hopcroft
Paul Allen, co-founder of the uberpowerful Microsoft Corporation who became owner of the Portland trailblazers and Seattle Seahawks, has passed away at the age of 65 from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a disease had had been battling with varying degrees of success for several years. His legacy is complicated. He is well known as a philanthropist, but then he made his fortune through Microsoft and its controversial business practices. He "persuaded" Seattle to build him a downtopwn stadium for his team, and gave them a Super Bowl championship in return. He is cited as the primary reason there is still pro basketball in Portland, having financed the Rose Garden in the 1990's, but the "Moda Center" is now more than thirty years old. Will whoever replaces Allen as Blazer owner insist on its replacement or make the customary threats to take the franchise out of Oregon? What happens to his enormous estate? Cancer
Just heard this myself about 15 minutes ago ... My wife, the former attorney, also wondered about his estate; but as he was someone who'd been a cancer patient for years, AND a business mind of high order, I expect the estate, while complex and huge, is sewn up really tight. It seems unlikely that he neglected many details. lemming
megaplayboy
The Experience Music Project is a nice legacy for him.
Greywind
Paul Allen was one of the good guys. A wonderful patron of Seattle-both the city and its legendary rock scene. He was a shy ultra wealthy super nerd who worshiped at the alter of the rock ethic. Somehow he managed to remain a really nice super generous guy especially when it came to supporting rock musicians. He and Heart had a long solid relationship where we traded playing shows at his magnificent Experience museum in exchange for recording studio time in town. We also helped provide concepts and content for some of the museums installations. He took the band guys out on many songwriting excursions on his yachts which also doubled as floating recording studios. Seattle and so many rock singers players and songwriters from everywhere have a lot to thank him for. Thank you Paul Allen. Have a beautiful jam up there with the big man! ~ Nancy Wilson on Facebook
death tribble
I thought that What Comes After was one of the demons after Harry Dresden in Jim Butcher's books.
Lawnmower Boy
Everyone wants an NFL team. They're a license to print money. (For somebody.) Since it'll be hard to buy the Seahawks outright, and then there's the stadium, my modest proposal is that the estate should just sell Seattle and move it. lemming
Cancer
I think every other jurisdiction in the country would file suit to prevent that. Unless they moved it into British Columbia, or somewhere into the heart of the North Pacific Gyre.
