  1. Re: Question for the Gallery about software and hero system There's the HCS (Hero Combat Simluator) Software that's free. You can find info about in the Software section of this board. - Christopher Mullins
  2. Re: Code VS Killing Poll Hmmm... interesting, but they do not apply to my quote. Philosophy is an interesting exercise, but I've rarely found it practical in everyday living. So I'll try to bring the focus back to the threads original question. What is the purpose of a CVK Disadvantage for the Player? To help gain points and further define your character's concept. What is the purpose of a CVK Disadvantage for the GM? To give the GM an opportunity to create a challenge for the character that tests that very CVK and let the character grow from the consequences of the character's decision. Just My Humble Opinion - Christopher Mullins
  3. Re: Code VS Killing Poll Ah, then you agree. Any Heroic character can kill, since killing doesn't define heroism or non-heroism. Obviously then, the motives behind the actions might have some influence over whether the character is heroic or not. Just Some Musings (8^D) - Christopher Mullins
  4. Re: Seduction an Everyman Skill Actually, yeah, I've been posting more, although I've always been here reading. (8^D) There's been some threads brought up that I actually thought I might add some useful information or questions. I try not to criticise, but simply point out missing information or clarification. I find most of your posts well thought out. - Christopher Mullins
  5. Re: Split Character Creation Actually... I've done exactly that. (8^D) I created a Creation Setting that helps a GM build a Genesis Scenario (where normal characters gain powers). It gives some structure and some guidelines that you can change to fit your particular campaign. I'm also running such a campaign over at the Herocentral.net site. I can email you the document if you want. - Christopher Mullins (schir1964 @ netzero.com)
  6. Re: Code VS Killing Poll Personally, I would choose to play #3, but only because that's the one description that is most clear. As a GM, I impose a Reluctant To Kill (CVK, Uncommon, Moderate) for zeor points to prevent players from taking Casual Killer, Blood Lust, and so forth. I'm not sure on the extremes for #1 and #2. Does #1 mean that if the Hero when presented with a single choice of Killing or Being Killed, that he will choose death. Not sure I wouild find such a character fun to play and somewhat useless since he would undoubtably be trying to keep everyone else from killing and being killled. Not a team player. What does #2 mean by extreme duress? Will kill only if life or other lives are in danger, or that the hero is being tortured? Or if someone has a gun in the Heroes back ordering him to kill someone else? It's very subjective and I can't really make a comment on it one way or another. Perhaps some example of people/characters for each level might have been helpful. - Christopher Mullins
  7. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please Sbarron, You've echoed the same arguments that others have already made here. Your first point will be rejected by Wanderer, since his opinion is that Artist Convention should not be taken as a literal restriction on the character concept. He says the Genre Convention is that No Fixed Point Of Origin is the norm, not the exception. Your second and third points will be rejected since he insists that the character shouldn't pay extra for something that's the norm. I disagree with your first point, only in that the Genre Convention should have no bearing on game system that evaluates cost based on how powers benefit/detriment the character. If we follow that line of object then what Hugh above suggests would be correct, that all powers should default to no END. - Christopher Mullins
  8. Re: Seduction an Everyman Skill Just a note Zornwil. I noticed it seemed as if you overlooked one of the criteria that KA brought out. The time factor. Being able to make friends quickly, "within minutes", in order to get what you want. You might not agree with that criteria, but your example did not appear to passed that test for the skill. Just Curious - Christopher Mullins
  9. Re: Aborting If DC's attack occurs before FH's next action, then FH must suffer all the penalties of being prone for that attack. - Christopher Mullins
  10. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please Wanderer, You still haven't convinced me that the rule should default to One Fixed Point Of Origin. Mainly because you haven't given enough evidence to support your view. Also your logic seems weak on some points. This makes it appear to be more an opinion based on your own dislikes and likes. Perhaps you should try coming at this from the opposite direction. Can you give us some examples of how the default FPOO rule in Champions games that you have observed have restricted the character in a way that was not reflected in comics? I personally have not seen a character restricted in the way you have described. Has this been a problem for you? - Christopher Mullins
  11. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please The fact that comics use artistic convention has no bearing on how things are evaluated in a game system such as this, where cost is evaluated based on benefit/detriment to the character. Therefore, if something is more beneficial, it will generally cost more. Hence, if being able to blast someone from any point on your body is more beneficial than not, it will cost more. Generally, the system starts with the basic concept and builds up from there. So it makes more common sense (just to me) that the default should be a fixed point of origin, and then if the character wants to have the additional benefit of having variable point of origin, then it should cost more. But that's just me. You say the system enforces a rule. Actually, it doesn't, you don't have to pay +1/4 for anything you don't want, especially since you are the GM. If you are the player, then you accept the rules enforced by that GM. Now to address the more general nature of rules. There are many things that the fans don't agree with Steve Long on. Damage Shield cost being one of the major issues. So if you don't like something about the system and want DOJ to change it, then that's great, you are in fine company, but you'll need to get in line with the rest of us. (8^D) The thing is, your post came across as trying to convince the fans here, that this particular rule was wrong or didn't make sense. It would appear that you are in the minority concerning this view. Good luck with your games, and have fun. (8^D) - Christopher Mullins
  12. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please Actually, there is no contradiction here. You're making a false assumption. Here's the difference between POO and Restrainable: Fixed Point Of Origin does not imply that the power stops functioning. Example: If Superman is Blindfolded, it does not stop him from using his Heat Vision. He might not be able to attack someone until he's freed himself of the blindfold, but he can still use his power and suffer any consequences of doing so. Restrainable specifically states (per your own quote) that the power in question can not be used, therefore it stops functioning. Example: Hawkman is unable to fly when his wings are entangled/tied up. He loses the power to fly at all. So there is no contradiction here. Just My Humble Opinion - Christopher Mullins
  13. Re: Interaction Skills Sorry for any confusion. Interaction Skills Acting Animal Handling Bribery Conversation High Society Interrogation Oratory Persuasion Seduction Trading These are all PRE based skills.
  14. Information Gathering A question for GMs out there. Do you allow Interaction skills to affect player's characters? NPC vs PC? PC vs PC? What do you allow and in what way? - Christopher Mullins
  15. Re: Selling people on Hero system when they're already inclined against it...? Some general information for all posters who may not know. This board has an feature that allows you to turn on an "Ignore" function on poster(s) that you may find annoying. This feature, once activated will cause all posts by any and all individuals on that list to be invisible to you. So, if someone has a pattern of behavior that continues to annoy people, soon that person won't have anyone responding to thier posts since they won't be seen anyway. Just Some Information - Christopher Mullins
  16. Re: Should all skills be everyman to some degree? Oh sorry. I've always rated anything below Familiarity as Unskilled 5- Roll. There you go. - Christopher Mullins
  17. Re: Should all skills be everyman to some degree? I guess my suggested system doesn't gel with anyone. Oh well, can't win them all the time. (8^D) - Christopher Mullins
  18. Re: Should all skills be everyman to some degree? Here is a system you can use that might alleviate the problems you are facing. I'm borrowing some concepts from another game system, but you can apply it directly to Hero without having to change anything within Hero. As GM you simply designate the Task Level for any particular action. The works great because it's flexible yet simple and can be decided easily on the fly. Task Level Very Common: -10 to Skill Roll. Task is so common/easy that failure is the exception. Common: -5 to Skill Roll. Task is common/easy. Failure occurs from time to time. Uncommon: +5 to Skill Roll. Task requires skill/experience/practice for chance of success. Very Uncommon: +10 to Skill Roll. Task requires skill/knowledge for chance of success. You simply overlay this system with the current one to cover all possible tasks that character might attempt. For those tasks that would be considered to be possible by everyman, they would be gauged as Very Common or Common. For those tasks that would be considered impossiblle without some type of skill or special knowledge by the character would be gauged as Uncommon. For those tasks that would be considered impossible even with a skill under normal circumstances would be gauged as Very Uncommon. - Christopher Mullins
  19. Re: Selling people on Hero system when they're already inclined against it...? Tesuji, After reading your most recent posts I've come to the following conclusions (of course any of these conclusions may be erroneous since I'm only going on the scant amount of information you've given): 1) Obviously you have a unique group of players that you game (FTF) with. Sounds like most are very mature and very forgiving of each other. However, I don't believe such groups of players are the norm. I would guess that most if not all your players are older than twenty. As such your experiences with such players (mature players) and methods described can not be applied to other groups of players. Therefore you advice to another GM may have little relevance to thier situation. 2) Obviously you have strong confidence in your own decision and methods. Therefore, I doubt you would allow yourself to be a GM of a group of immature players. Based on your post, I would suspect that if you may have created an environment to drive away immature players. This approach may have helped create a group of players as described in my first point above. 3) As GM you have created a certain style of gaming that you are comfortable with and that your current players are comfortable with. Your ideas of how your game should progress and it's goals are enforced by you. Which is as it should be. If you think that every character should gain the same amount of experience regardless in you game, then that's great. If you have a player who disagrees and thinks it shouldn't, I doubt you will change your campaign rules for that player or even all of them, if they so wanted. However, this doesn't prove or even support the notion that your style of play is any better than anyone other GM's. But that is how you are coming across in your posts, whether you intended to imply that or not. Good luck with your gaming, but I see no constructive purpose in continuing to post in a manner that suggests that your gaming style is better than someone elses. Just My Humble Opinion (8^D) Good luck to everyone in thier games. - Christopher Mullins
  20. Re: Selling people on Hero system when they're already inclined against it...? Tesuji, I'm confused by your posts. It seems that they are strictly defensive in nature at this point. What's the purpose of your posts now? You've given your opinion. Youi're entitled to it. Some have found the manner in which you stated your opinion to be offensive in certain areas. For what purpose do you continue post then? To change the minds of those you may have offended? I don't think that will happen. You're not adding anything constructive, which is the primary purpose of these boards, at least that is why I come here to post. Just not sure what the point is of going on arguing over whether or not your posts are offensive or not? In my opinion, that is what this has boiled down to. Just My Humble Opinion - Christopher Mullins
  21. Re: Stretching Question Oh, well this is a different thing altogether then. What you are really saying is that SFX you have in mind doesn't match the mechanics of the Focus rules as far as the breaking part of it. I'm not sure exactly why it doesn't fit. Please express the complete SFX of the webline as you would like it to function. Then we can go from there. - Christopher Mullins
  22. Re: Stretching Question If it does enough damage, shouldn't it? Stretching does attach you and applying the Focus Rules doesn't mutiliate it. Tell you what, go and reread all the rules of Focus and then come back and ask me again it you still don't know how this would work. If you don't like it, don't use it. But don't start critizing my solution to how to make it work. - Christopher Mullins
