You can never have too many threads based on Sitcoms... Did I ever mention GURPS: Are You Being Served? Mrs Slocombes DNPC had better go unmentioned here. Far too much scope for a double entendre, so I'd better drop the topic before somebody slips one in!
  5. Do you reckon the Vicar could turn undead? Also- Jones was indeed suspiciously sprightly... I'm guessing he was actually a much younger man, probably one of the (genuine historical bit!) incredibly secret auxiliaries trained & equipped by the SOE to be a resistance-in-place in the event of a Nazi invasion. Over 500 underground bunkers were created throughout England and locals trained in sabotage and assassination (including being equipped with state of the art weaponry)... made the "Home Guard" look a bit poor really. Godfrey's Physical Limitation is almost certainly a ruse to allow him to change into his Heroic Identity. (edit to remove embarassing evidence that I included an idea that Crimson Arrow had already mentioned re: Hodges... sloppy, V, very sloppy)
  6. So I guess no one would be interested in my Twilight 2000 based rules set for simulating the Captain Caveman milieu? (heh, used "milieu" in a gratuitous manner, serious roleplayer credibility established now beyond any doubt)

On a parallel board, Crimson Arrow wrote : To which I must reply: Pike was not only Wilson's DNPC (and I'd guess an 'incompetent' one too, certainly if his CO's frequent assessment of both his intelligence and his youth was accurate) but probably also some sort of dark secret. While it was never made explicit in the canon (save for those with eyes to see) LeMesurier asked Jimmy Perry on the last day of filming if Wilson was Pike's father. "Of course he bloody is." came the response. Thriving hotbed of permissiveness, Warmington.

  10. cnwf would have been pronounced "k'nuf" or "k'noof" if I recall my Old English course correctly (what a career-minded element of my English degree that was, it's been useful almost every day...). Silent letters are pretty much a modern thing (modern being since the widespread use of printing!). Prior to printing establishing what people came to see as the "correct" spelling for words, people really just wrote words down however they happened to be pronouncing them at the time- and of course this varied by locale, by time and even the same individual would spell the same word in different ways. People weren't hung up on it back then. So if there is a silent letter in a word you can bet that at some point it was pronounced (by someone somewhere) with the letters sounded. There are bound to be exceptions (this is English after all!) but this is a good general rule. As to when exactly the "k-" in knife became silent I'm not sure. I think it had gone by Spokeshafe's day, otherwise the rhythm of any line with "knife" would seem to be a couple of syllables out to our modern ears.
  11. Depending on who's being interviewed you could try the following expressions for equipment: Gear would be an acceptable expression by someone of a practical but taciturn nature. Kit would be perfectly acceptable even from a military source. If it's the Mayor of Tintagel who is using the expression then it depends on their background & personality of course- a typical Mayoral type is unlikely to use too much in the way of slang. As for the spelling question... much as I hate to admit it but you Colonials (sorry) tend to spell things more sensibly. British spelling pretty much got fixed when printing became widespread (before then it was pretty much left to chance!) and so our spelling now reflects the way words were pronounced way back then. "Knife" was once pronounced as "ke-neefa" for example, "Yacht" was pronounced "yach -t" Why should harbour have a "u" in it, when the "ou" sound is now pronounced as a short "o". Please destroy this mail before any of my British Liberation colleagues see it... they'll think I've joined the Mel Gibson brigade. LXG

Nitpicky... Monsieur Gillen wrote Only speaking for the comics, but IIRC Dupin came out of retirement because of the similarities between the recent "Hyde" incidents and the much earlier orangutan incidents from the original Rue Morgue murders. Jekyll would have moved to Paris in LOEG chronology much later than the Rue Morgue incident so the chances are that the original Rue Morgue murders were indeed the work of the crazed ape rather than the shapeshifting Englishman. I'm still waiting for the film LXG (X!) to be released in England. I think, from comments on the board, as an avid fan of the comic series I should approach it as a separate entity entirely in order to give the film a fair hearing.

    Serial killers...

In my last Champions campaign the Mentalist from London's "other" (ie npc) superhero team was also a serial killer, using his mental powers to trap his victims and play havoc with any witnesses. The PC team managed to apprehend someone (a normal) they thought was the serial killer but had no hard evidence. Deciding to find out for sure they swallowed their pride and went to ask the npc team for help: basically "can we borrow your mentalist?" Said Mentalist happily turned up and did a deep mind probe of the perp. Announced (truthfully) "He's not your man," and then took the pc team ruthless-hardcase to one side and let him know discreetly "This *is* the guy, he's guilty as sin, but you know your buddies will hand him over to the courts and he may well walk." Naturally team ruthless-hardcase decides to take the law into his own hands and stalks the hapless perp home where he witnesses said perp (acting on Mind Control cues planted while the Mentalist was supposed to be probing his memories) stashing all his carving knives in a hold-all... It took a while to entangle but the Mentalist was exposed a few sessions later and gleefully pounded.
  15. I know I'm being picky, but for the record Robin Hood was 12th Century at the latest (since Richard I died in 1199AD) and a lot of the legends that went to make up the story started much earlier than that anyway. For the record "Magic Lite" or "Magic Free" are my favourite types of fantasy campaign. It helps focus the action on the personalities and actions of the PC with less scope for arbitrary fiat.
  16. McCoy could be right. All those hairy Brit rockers getting teenaged girls hyped up into hysterical frenzies. Perhaps they were attempting to harvest the emotional energies known to the wise as 'nomos' which could then be used later in evil rituals involving confectionary and groupies. It's a well known fact that the Rolling Stones gathered nomos.
  17. click, click, click, click...Right here she is. Still a bit rough around the edges, but I was short of time. She probably needs a few languages (Native Italian, definitely French, English, Cantonese, probably others) and some rounding out in terms of making her fit your campaign. She should suffice as a dangerous high-class assassin, though in a stand up fight she'll probably end up (momentarily) out of action...By the way, if anyone can work out what her favourite band is (not Queen by the way!) or where she spends her winters I'll gladly award them a No Prize...May I present... She enjoys the high life, she demands luxury, expensive holidays and so forth. Her martial skills and callous approach to her work gets her the money to get them. When not working she is a real hedonist, as playful as a pussy cat.Quote:"Wanna try?"Background: She was born into a very poor family in Naples in the early 1930s and lived rough on the street with her brother following the death of her parents in the Second World War. She learned to be tough to survive and get what she wanted. As soon as she begged enough money to buy a gun she embarked upon a career as a killer, stealing the money she needed to move on. By the early 1960s she was already infamous as a deadly assassin, moving in the highest social circles, the target of Intelligence agencies around the world, but always one step ahead. It was while she was dwelling in Paris, off the Boulevard St Michel, that she managed to obtain the high tech laser rifle she now uses as her main long range assassination tool. She took in in part payment for the seemingly accidental death of a senior British politician at the request of an emerging corporate entity. It has recently dawned on her that she has not aged physically since the early 1960s and she still has the appearance of a woman in her mid 20s. Her brother, now a Private Investigator, is also seemingly immune to the ravages of time. He has committed himself to finding his sister and bringing her to justice. Given his skills at psychological profiling (he wants to get inside her head) he has a good chance of catching up with her. What is behind the siblings' seeming immortality is as yet unknown to them. 18. How about... Mack the Knife (originally an unpleasant psycho gangster) Killer Queen (by 'Queen', the lyrics define a very interesting, elegant, potentially very dangerous character... I may even write this one up!) Assassing (by Marillion, not a misspelling! The lyrics are about character assassination, but a parahuman interpretation could I suppose stretch to 'death by music')

The more unbreakable the security, the greater the protection, the more likely she is to try to steal something. She regards herself as an artiste. Her powers, alas, are as unsubtle as they come, so she prefers to rely on her skills to actually carry out her thefts. Naturally she will not hesitate to unleash her explosive abilities if her freedom depends upon them. She is a light-hearted woman, friendly and flirtatious. She is unlikely to be hated by many people, except perhaps those she robs. Quote:"Looks like you've got me" (((BOOM))) "Then again, maybe not."Background: Tina was badly bitten by the burglary bug during High School. She became fascinated with stories of gentleman burglars such as Hornung's "Raffles" and learned all she could about locks and alarms. Her first few burglaries were conducted with no thought of actually stealing at all- they were exercises in outwitting the security of her targets. Naturally she soon learned the benefits that wealth could bring... Her powers were gained during one of her heists, when taking refuge in a high security laboratory from which she was stealing some prototype superconductor materials. An automated process began in the chamber she had chosen to hide in, and she found herself bombarded with virtual-antipositrons (or some such thing- she never actually found out what they were called). Following this exposure she gained the ability to generate a field of the same energy around herself allowing her to employ it for a variety of explosive purposes. To her disgust there seem to be very few subtle applications of her powers and she regards using them on a robbery as unsporting. Powers/Tactics: When engaged on a thieving expedition she is more likely to rely on her skills, stealth and infiltration abilities to accomplish her goals. She tends to only use her powers when things go wrong (and she needs to for instance disintegrate the wall of the strongroom because the lock has defeated her- she would view that as a failure however). In combat she will teleport to places with cover before unleashing her explosions on her foes. All her offensive powers (and her teleportation) rely on two-handed gestures that consist of building and channelling her energy-aura. Without the freedom to do this she cannot use her powers. Campaign Use: A combo cat-burglar, energy-projector, potential romantic complication. She's too flighty to make a hero's "steady" but may be good soap opera fodder for a session or two.
