Every adventure will contain somewhere within it a section of backstory that explains the plot of every adventure in the campaign so far. Amazingly this will seem to fit with the current flow of the adventure and help keep the players on track. 2. The first gaming session will take about three hours as the player characters come together to thwart a bank robbery by Ogre. The second session, also about three hours, has the characters confront a small group of villains at a diamond heist. The third session, about four hours long, will be similar. At this point realising the players like the campaign things change. The fourth session lasts for sixteen hours straight. The fifth is thirty six hours without a break and the sixth is about the same as that. While there are still only one or two actual encounters during each session the GM insists on roleplaying through the characters' lives as they go shopping (or is that shipping?), make breakfast, darn holes in their costume ("Darn these holes!" Ron ejaculated angrily. "Stop that at once," Hermione snapped, "it's hard enough threading this needle without it being all sticky.") and so on. 3. About halfway through the campaign you realise with a certain amount of concerned awe that the key facts you need to succeed were almost certainly mentioned in passing by an NPC in the opening moments of the first encounter of the first episode. 4. You can figure out who the goodies and baddies are, and what their backstories are by having a basic knowledge of Latin or English etymology or a general familiarity with world mythology and then asking their name. Hint: Any NPC called Judas Malevolentia is probably to be avoided. If their name is even remotely connected to any type of animal look for feeding bowls in their room. 5. Don't get too attached to your DNPCs. 6. Overweight people are NOT to be trusted. 7. Keep an eye on Stronghold. The revolving door policy is back in force. 8. Your GM has a copy of Anagram Genius. Get yours now. 9. Racism is a bad thing. 10. Racism is a bad thing. 11. Racism is a bad thing. 12. YES WE GOT THAT ONE THANK YOU! 13. The NPCs are NOT going to save you. It's up to you. Deal with it. 14. You may gripe about the GM's foibles, but you'll have a damned good time doing it. 15. You get even more flak from Evangelical groups about your gaming than you did when you bought a copy of TSR's infamous AL93 Module ("Dreadful Dungeon of Thelemic Crowleyism" in 1989) and then read it aloud in Church. Just as likely to work on a unified theory of character creation that results in having a single characteristic, the name of which defines the character's level in it and also removes the need for random die rolls to see whether it works or not in any given circumstance. And he'd still make it fun.

Incidentally I'm currently reading "Brief History of Time" and have been pleasantly surprised to find out what a witty writer Prof H is - hence my browsing his own site for more stuff. (I know the site you linked to isn't actually his, but thought this would be an appropriate point to raise this)

And as a handy plot device have the ability to do magic as an exclusive trait of the non-augmented humans (due to the dna bonding irregularity every 23rd angstrom which is corrected in the augmented humans, but ironically allows magical activity) as a nice leveller. Eugenic supermen versus physically/mentally inferior homo sapiens (or Pan Sapiens Edulis to be precise) with magical wildcard abilities. Hell, this could be a goer!

  19. Re: Future Knowledge Oh yes indeed - but since that player and I are both rabid fans of the Flashman series, I can hit him with more twists/turns/surprises by not doing that! I love the Flashman books, not least because of the meticulous research that goes into them - it's one of the reasons I chose the 1840s/1850s for my Ars Magica stuff, having learned a lot about the period as a result of the books.
  20. Re: Future Knowledge Firstly of course the players have no guarantee that things will proceed as "real history" dictates - as has been stated above. Secondly if the characters keep talking about future events IN CHARACTER they will soon get a reputation as weirdoes. Whether their predictions turn out right or wrong they will get noted. Heck, have a master villain spot their accurate predictions and have them kidnapped so that the MV can extract their pineal glands and drink the adrenochromic fluid within it so that he/she can share their precognition. Thirdly I'm lucky I don't have players who are such bad roleplayers! I don't count the comments you mentioned above that were made in fun etc, but if any group tried to use non-character knowledge of future events for a real advantage my opinion of them would go way down. One player of mine is a cavalry captain in a mid 19th Century Ars Magica campaign I'm running. The player has rather glumly mentioned how long it will be till he gets shipped off to the Crimea and the Charge of the Light Brigade... but the character hasn't. And if that's where his orders send him that's where he'll go without "out-of-character" excuses. Mind you, the flip side of that is that he trusts me that it will be interesting to play through if he does get sent there... (btw he won't! The politics of the Order of Hermes will keep him tangled up enough in England, to the extent that he'd probably prefer a few Russian cannons)

  24. Re: Superhuman women and normal women Why skin tight costumes? Artists learn to draw human bodies nude to learn anatomy. Add a few lines & insignia to a nude body, get it coloured & hey presto: easy costume. Having to draw fabric, folds, lots of accessories etc is more complex. I really believe the "skin tight costume" trope came about through the need for speedy production of artwork for the industry.
