A couple of post ago, I mentioned not wanting to release the more "cover" oriented private commissions as clip art.  Well, LPJ Design and I worked out a price point that, yup!  We ARE releasing some artwork as Single Portfolio pieces.  Yes, these are more expensive, but compared to a cover, which I charge from $400.00 to $1000.00 depending on complexity, these are a STEAL!  So, if you are a publisher who needs some fantasy adventure artwork, please consider my offerings:

Check out the Single Portfolios, 1 and 2, here:

I'm about to enter into a contract with a ton of work that needs to be done in a month.  So my posting will probably be a bit spotty, if non existent.  I don't think I will be able to put up the artwork I will be working on for awhile.  But it is fantasy art for "digital" card game.

But to leave you with a bit of artwork, here is another Ten Ton Studio challenge.  This week, it is Captain Marvel!  I did this sketch on vellum with pencil and black color pencil... mostly the color pencil.  I kinda like the waxiness on the smooth vellum.

Here is the link to Ten Ton Studios.  Voting begins tomorrow on it.

And here is the artwork in case you don't want to go over to Ten Ton.

    Shazam! It's Captain Marvel!

Here is some work I did awhile ago, but got permission to post.  It is for a virtual card game for facebook, and the working title is Phaeton.  I don't know how far along it is, or quite how it is played.  But the core concept is based around some kind of school for teen supers, ala X-mansion.

My friend Steve Ellis was lead artist and art director on this one, and it was both fun and tough to work with the constraints and character concepts he had set up.  Tough in that we have very different ways of working, especially when it comes to inking.  So, I was trying to come close to his inking style.  But that was fun too, because it pushed and prodded me to really think about how I do things and I learned a lot.

So here are a smattering of images that I done for the game.

A commission piece from one of my own players for his own character. She is a dragon who takes elven form and is a weather witch... that is a lot of concepts to jam into one image... but I think I might have worked it out okay.

Mine happened with my very first Champions character, Ranger. Ranger was a very heavily defended powered armor type I played for four years; from '82 to '86. This happened near the end of his career, when he had over 120 XP.

Our team, the Sentinels, had tracked down a terrorist group (VIPER?) who were planning to detonate a medium-yield nuclear weapon in the center of Manhattan. During the course of the fight, the bomb accidentally was struck by an electrical attack, and the Time to Detonation timer abruptly reset to 01:00 and started counting down.

    ...59...58...57...

Oh s**t! Ranger grabs the bomb (he was also our team's brick) and flies out the window with it. While he's only a SPD 4, he's still the fastest flyer on our team with 25" X4 NCM, and he immediately goes to non-combat flight.

...55...54...53... At his maximum flight speed Ranger can fly 4 kilometers per minute, or less than 2.5 miles before detonation. I tell the GM that Ranger is heading east out to New York Harbor to get it as far away from the city as possible when it detonates.

The other characters and the bad guys have basically stopped fighting, because they know they'll be within the blast radius if it goes off.

    ...30...29...28...

Right about now Ranger passes out of the city and is flying over water towards the Atlantic.

    ...20...19...18...

Right about here the GM reminds me that despite Ranger's extraordinarily high defenses (62 PD/58 ED, most of it Hardened and Resistant) there is no way he'll survive being at Ground Zero when a 100 Kiloton nuke explodes in his arms. I nod as Ranger Pushes his Flight; no need to conserve the END Battery at this point.

    ...12...11...10...

The GM tells me it's time for Ranger to drop the bomb and escape; making it clear that with his defenses Ranger only needs to be a few hundred meters away to survive the blast. I look up and meet the GM's eyes and smile; and I see the astonishment on his face as he suddenly realizes Ranger isn't going to drop the bomb. Every second he can carry it further away from New York will save hundreds or even thousands of lives; and with Ranger's Total "Protects Innocents" no other option is possible. I didn't even have to think about; I knew that's what Ranger would do.

    ...3...2...1...click!

    Click?

Seems the hit which had screwed up the timer had also damaged the bomb's firing mechanism. Or, at least, that's what the GM claimed afterward. I've never been sure if that was really true or if he was just afraid of killing my character. I've always been half certain he cheated. I honestly wouldn't have minded a bit if Ranger had died then, because it would have been a hero's death. It would have been a glorious way for a superhero to die, saving untold thousands of innocent people.

Figuring anything else would be anticlimactic after that, I retired Ranger shortly thereafter and started playing a ninja. (Hey, it was the 80's!)

Well, since everyone else is posting pics I thought I'd put up one I just finished working on. I didn't draw this, but it's a cut, paste, recolor job. It's based on a pic of Opaque of The Circle, from the Algernon Files.

The character is Luna, an energy projector with "lunar"-based powers and abilities. She's from the group Justice Force, for our convention game we're working on.

Announcing the new "Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge" device, otherwise known as BOOK!

It's a revolutionary breakthrough in technology: no wires, no electric circuits, no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on. It's so easy to use even a child can operate it. Just lift its cover. Compact and portable, it can be used anywhere--even sitting in an armchair by the fire--yet it is powerful enough to hold as much information as a CD-ROM! Here's how it works: each BOOK is constructed of sequentially numbered sheets of paper (recyclable), each capable of holding thousands of bits of information. These pages are locked together with a custom-fit device called a binder which keeps the sheets in their correct sequence. By using both sides of each sheet, manufacturers are able to cut costs in half. Each sheet is scanned optically, registering information directly into your brain. A flick of the finger takes you to the next sheet. The book may be taken up at any time and used by merely opening it. The "browse" feature allows you to move instantly to any sheet, and move forward and backward as you wish. Most come with an "index" feature, which pinpoints the exact location of any selected information for instant retrieval. An optional "BOOKmark" accessory allows you to open the BOOK to the exact place you left it in a previous session--even if the BOOK has been closed. BOOKmarks fit universal design standards; thus a single BOOKmark can be used in BOOKs by various manufacturers. Portable, durable and affordable, the BOOK is expected to enjoy tremendous demand of truly historic proportions. New titles continue to appear, due to the continued popularity of its programming tool, the Portable Erasable-Nib Cryptic Intercommunication Language Stylus.

Re: f/u Grab: Throwing & Squeezing after initial Grab

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "either" roll. If a character attempts a Grab and misses, he's never going to get to the "Throw" stage of things in the first place, so the Throw rules don't come into play. Only if the character has to make an Attack Roll with his Throw -- either to perform it at all, or if he's trying to hit a specific target with the Thrown character/object -- are the "miss" rules going to come into play.

If what you're asking is, "Can a character Throw a Grabbed person in an effort to hit another target (such as another character or a specific hex), miss that target, but still inflict Throw damage on the Thrown person?", then the answer is "No." There aren't any provisions in the rules for that; a miss is a miss. The GM could alter that if he likes, but generally the rules don't let a character miss/fail and still obtain some measure of success.

    The Immortals

This is another piece Ian did for me featuring the new incarnation of the Immortals. Some of you might remember my "One May Live!" thread from awhile back. In it, I explained how, in my home-brew campaign world, I was killing the Immortals as part of an metaplotline. Well, in the aftermath, the group was destined to return. And here's the new lineup.

And here's the link to see the picture of the new Immortals.

Vanguard. He was pulled out of time from the past, from late in World War 2. He stands for liberty and justice. He's a very patriotic American. Unknowingly, he proved his humanistic qualities qualities to an enlightened Eastern mystic who rewarded him by teaching him clarity of mind and willpower. Through sheer will, Vanguard can make himself stronger or faster or more agile. He's gone through several changes in personality and method since arriving in the present a dozen years ago, but his character has always remained true to form. After the Immortals' devastation at the hands of Mutiny and Novus Ordum, Vanguard took it upon himself to rebuild the legendary group. He is recognized as its very capable leader. (Yes, he's very very Captain America. And the Immortals are essentially the Avengers of my world. Vanguard was a personal character of mine back when I actually got to play Champions instead of being the one to always run it.)

Lady Hex. She's a sorcerer whose abilities and spells revolve around chance, fate, and luck. She's the granddaughter of the Golden Age heroine Lady Liberty. She's been close personal friends with Vanguard for several years now and was the first person he considered for rebuilding the Immortals.

Apollo. Apollo's tale is a convoluted one. Apollo was created by the Alchemist, Doctor Hephaestus, but not as Apollo. He was Gold, one of the team of heroes created by Hephaestus known as the Golems. They were based out of San Francisco. Recently, the Golden Age hero (and the first sentient robot ever created) Clockwork went mad after decades of misuse, and under a villainous pseudonym, threatened all of the San Francisco Bay area. In the end, Clockwork realized what he was doing but to stop the destruction, his mind and essence had to merge with Gold. Gold sacrificed his own personality and "life" to allow this. Afterward, Clockwork/Gold became reborn as Apollo and moved to New York City. There, he became friends with Vanguard who was asked by the courts to keep an eye on him. Apollo has the powers that Gold had (fire manipulation) combined with Clockwork's intelligence and reasoning. He was an obvious choice for the Immortals.

Victor. A consumate hero. He is widely regarded as one of the strongest people on Earth. He has a heart of gold and there's nothing he wouldn't do to help someone. He claims to draw strength and power through following a 12-point code of honor. At times he can be a tad too zealous when discussing his lifestyle. But his intentions are good and his addition to the team only strengthens it. He loves the physical challenges and is usually the first member to wade into the fray. He is also widely looked upon as the team's moral and philosophical backbone.

Animus and Anima. Two heroes that occupy the same body, they are constantly switching forms back and forth depending on who is needed most. Animus is the female form. She's a tough girl, and although she's not as strong as Victor, she does utilize great strength and stamina. Anima is the male form of the two. He is a much less physical person and has the power of emotion manipulation. In either form, they can fly. They can be a confusing set for the others, but they work well in tactical situations.

Aurora. Not all of the previous Immortals died in that catastrophic attack. In fact, two lived. Recurve survived the battle, but was permanently paralyzed from it and has retired from the super-biz. Half-Life was attacked by Doctor Hephaestus and Insecta and was thought to have been killed by them. Half-Life was a complex being made of two energies: an energy being alien to our solar system, and the guiding mental energies leftover from when Champion, the world's first and greatest metahuman, sacrificed himself to save the world at the end of World War 2. Half-Life was dispersed in the onslaught and it took some time to reintegrate. When he did finally pull himself back together, he was without Champion and the alien being was revealed to be feminine in form. She renamed herself Aurora and asked to be on the team. Vanguard readily accepted.

With the repairs of the mansion in progress, a new team of Immortals emerges to continue the legacy...

    Whacha think?

aylwin13 reacted to pruttm in DEMON Adventures
Ages ago I started a meta-plotline in my Champions game that lasted nearly five years. The main adversary was a version of DEMON that was based on Classic Organizations DEMON but enhanced with my own characters and ideas. I really liked the idea of the Inner Circle including different magical backgrounds. I decided that each Inner Circle member ran a branch of DEMON but had access to the DEMON technology, artifacts and wealth. I took the building blocks of Doctor Wu and created the Immortal sorcerer Blood Dragon. At his right-hand was a man named Blood Finger. He was a fiercely loyal but very sadistic martial arts master. Blood Dragon's goal was to build an ancient artifact called the Orb of Omniscience. This item was created eons ago by a god that wanted to part with his power. He poured his powers into the orb and split it into five sections. The god created pieces because his power couldn't be destroyed. Each section was flung to different corners of the world so it could not be easily assembled again. The god then walked away to experience the life of a mortal. Each piece was very powerful and wanted to be used. Each one found a way to evolve into something valuable to humanity in its region. When they fell into human hands it helped to fuel various groups into long lasting existence. The pieces managed to empower the lives of the Greeks, The Norse, The Aztecs, The Celts and the oddest being a cult based on the god Pyaray from Moorcook's Elric Saga. More on that strangeness later. The Egyptian people were also intertwined with these objects as they attempted to reassemble the Orb before anyone in history attempted the feat.

DEMON and the player characters moved through each adventure that uncovered the pieces in modern times and attempted to secure the Orb piece before the other. During the creation of one of these scenarios I took a stab at writing an adventure book just to see how it would turn out. Here I present The Mystery of Sable Island.doc which details the first few acts in the adventure to locate the orb piece that fueled the now long dead Pyaray cult. Inside are details on the locales of Sable Island and The offshore energy platformThebaud. Character details for Blood Finger, the eccentric Russ Mason and the songstress Howler. rigs, a giant squid, sorcerers and song...what's not to like? All this is complemented by photos, art, and maps in Microsoft Word format.

If there is interest I can locate more odds and ends from the final act of this adventure which didn't make it into the document above as well as other interesting pieces from my campaign's DEMON.
