  1. Re: Hero system complexity Of note Empire of the Petal Throne was available in the late 70s (first published in 1975). I know this because it is what I started out with. I also played D&D, though I bailed well before 2nd edition was published.
  2. Re: 6E What happened to HKA? Yup, and we had this discussion before the rules were published. One of the more lively ones as I recall. The way I look at it is that buying Strength gives you x number of HtH Damage Classes. The only difference between normal and killing is that you need to buy a Killing Attack to be able to use those Strength DCs as killing damage.
  3. Re: 6E What happened to HKA? Minor quibble: It isn't a matter of how well you can model the real world and maintain game balance. It is a matter of how well you can model heroic fiction* and maintain game balance. *and of course different kinds of heroic fiction need different models
  4. Re: 6E What happened to HKA? How about arriving at an 18d6 normal attack when only paying 5pts (that then gets a -1/4 limitation) for the first 1d6? Both would require you also have paid for an 85 STR. Of note the core rules (Toolkitting: Adding Damage on 6E2 p99) do specifically mention that a lot of Refs might find a general rule of thumb that the damage adding rules cannot more than double the base damage of any attack.
  5. Re: A Thread for Random Musings A friendly reminder: The intent of this thread is for Random Musings. It would be appreciated if any replies to the Random Musings could be done in another thread.
  6. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos His Khaavren stuff is pretty good too.
  7. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos Eh, it was discussed prior to publication. I've noted my opinion on the matter earlier in the thread. My personal opinion is that 6e does a great job of getting rid of a lot of the kludgy feel that the system had picked up over the years.
  8. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos Entirely dependent on the setting. For example in the Dragaeran Hero campaign I'm gearing up OMCV is used for all offensive magic instead of OCV. Including non-sorcerers throwing spells out of magic items.
  9. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos Ah. Setting level issue rather than a rules issue. There are a large number of ways of dealing with it. For me at least if there was nothing that OMCV was useful for for a particular character I'd likely rule that they didn't have an OMCV and wouldn't allow them to sell it back. If there is a way in which it can be useful for them and they choose to so restrict themselves, I'll generally not have a problem with it. And for that matter we're talking about a maximum of 6 points, so it isn't really an issue that moves onto the radar for me much.
  10. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos What's wrong with OMCV?
  11. Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore Leave off the onions and it sounds pretty good.
  12. Re: House Rules Glad I could help.
  13. Re: House Rules As to the cost, that actually isn't the case. Officially from Steve if you want to buy for instance 20PD and 20ED and want both to be Resistant and Hardened you have to buy them like this: 18 18PD (20 total with your base) 18 18ED (20 total with your base) 10 Hardened (+1/4) for 20PD/20ED 25 Resistant (+1/2) for 20PD/20ED Hardened (+1/4) For a total of 71 points. The same cost as buying 20PD 20EP Resistant Protection (Hardened (+1/4), after you sell back your innate 2PD/2ED. And there is no reason that you can't buy multiple instances of Resistant Protection on one character. A 5rPD/5rED suit of Armor along with a 15rPD/15rED force field and a mind shield with 10rMD could easily be three separate Powers rather than just one big one.
  14. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos Only if it is being applied by itself. If you are applying it with another advantage it works very differently. Buying: 70 20PD/20ED Resistant (+1/2), Hardened (+1/4) Gets you 20 PD and 20 ED that is hardened vs normal attacks, works against the body from a killing attack, but isn't hardened vs a killing attack. To get all 20 PD and 20 ED resistant and hardened vs both normal and killing damage you need to buy: 20 20PD 20 20ED 10 Hardened (+1/4) on 20PD/20ED 25 Resistant (+1/2) on 20PD/20ED (Hardened +1/4) 75 Total
  15. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos Because it means that there is an Advantage (Resistance) that is applied in a different fashion than all of the other Advantages in the game.
  16. Re: Hero System Books Have Way to many Typos Ah, I misunderstood what you were saying. Yes, buying PD and ED with the workaround comes out as the same cost as if you were to buy Resistant Protection instead, because you are effectively buying the PD and ED with the Resistant Advantage, and then applying other Advantages to the new total. And since the cost of PD and ED with the Resistant Advantage is the same as the Resistant Protection power, the total will be the same. I though you meant that simply buying PD and ED and applying the Resistant Advantage along with other Advantage(s) as per normal was the identical or similar cost. Sorry 'bout that.
