  3. "Dead men, dead men swinging in a tree How many dead men do you see? Tongue turned blue and face gone grey Watch them as they twist and sway. The first one killed the butcher man Then cooked him in the frying pan Served him to his hungry guests And gave them seconds on request The next one with his smile and sweets Stole poor children off the streets To men who dressed unsavory He sold them into slavery Breaking into a home at night The thief he had a nasty fright Filled his foolish head with ale Woke in the morn in the county jail The artist with his daunting skills Tried his hand at painting bills But caught in rain he was undone When the ink he'd use did start to run With promises of great return Taking gold he did not earn Bundled it up out of sight Quietly slipped off into the night Three houses into ashes burned The sheriff with no place to turn Did spy a stranger to his town Locked him up and beat him down Dead men, dead men swinging in a tree How many dead men do you see? Six feet long and six men wide Round their necks the noose be tied."
  4. Preposterous; prior to 1962, colors did not exist.
  5. "He came in silvern armour, trimmed with black— A lover come from legends long ago— With silver spurs and silken plumes a-blow, And flashing sword caught fast and buckled back In a carven sheath of Tamarack. He came with footsteps beautifully slow, And spoke in voice meticulously low. He came and Romance followed in his track... I did not ask his name— I thought him Love; I did not care to see his hidden face. All life seemed born in my intaken breath; All thought seemed flown like some forgotten dove. He bent to kiss and raised his visor’s lace... All eager-lipped I kissed the mouth of Death."
  6. Hubris is attempting to land your hot-air balloon atop The Eiffel Tower. I would call you a vulture, but that would be wrong; in flight, even the lowest of birds conveys a degree of majesty, no matter how slender. No...you are more like a leech attached to the gnarly boil on the ass of the ugliest river toad.
  7. "Of all your muscles, your tongue is always the last to tire." "And yet, my fearsome friend, that piece of pink prized by pedlars, priestesses and princesses across the land has done more to lift you out of danger than thy terrific thews."
  8. The real power of the friends spell is in the area of effect and the fact that there is no limit on number of creatures affected. This is great for suddenly finding yourself surrounded by a large number of humanoids. Most of them have a terrible save versus magic to begin with, and low intelligence creatures have a wisdom range of 2-8 which gives them a penalty against mind-affecting magic. If a few of them make their saves--even better. This introduces the possibility of intra-monster fighting. The greatly impressed, desire to help and all that supercedes any existing reaction roll. It's an automatic positive. The additional charisma points help with their reactions to ideas. proposals, or suggestions made by the caster after having cast the spell.
  9. purl /pərl/ LITERARY verb verb: purl; 3rd person present: purls; past tense: purled; past participle: purled; gerund or present participle: purling (of a stream or river) flow with a swirling motion and babbling sound. "large stones stood blackly in the water, making it purl as it rolled around them"
  10. Let's say I'm in the mood for Italian. I can head to my kitchen and throw something together with available ingredients; whatever I cook will be fully under my control. Of course, I'm not exactly a master of the culinary arts and a substantial investment of time plus effort is required. Alternatively, when I am craving a particular style of Italian cuisine, I can visit a chef; I may - on occasion - have to put up with his eccentricities (e.g., adding a pinch of salt or removing a vegetable), but at least I know what to expect.
  11. Hatred is a well of naught but seawater, from which one may always draw yet never be slaked.
  12. Magic swords may captivate audiences, but sling bullets win the war.
  13. Magic swords may captivate audiences, but sling bullets win the war.
  14. Unexpected automobile impact, a bit of lead in the water, cookie-cutter art, "I'm on the internet! Get off the phone!"... Definitely a coin flip.
