  1. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... I (druid) and my friend (barbarian) waltz into a slum-tavern in the Wharf District of Delphi. (greek D&D campaign) I walk up to the bar tender and say "Hello!" Bar tender: "Hello.." Me: "You look like an upstanding citizen.. How about I buy you a drink, on the house!" *I succeed on my bluff check miracualously, even though I have no ranks" Bar tender: "sure!" *he gives it to me and I succeed again on a Sleight of Hand check to pour in a potion of reduce person. He fails his will save* *then the barbarian throws a sack over him, knocks him out, picks him up and takes him out to the docks, puts him on a raft and pushes it out to sea.* * Then I get behind the bar and am now the proprietor of the establishment. Random guy: "I'd like a drink of strong ale!" Me: "Sure. For 20 gp, you can have it on the house!" *I succeed on Bluff again* Random guy: "Sound like a deal to me!" Than that became the saying for the rest of the night, anytime anyone asked for something. Also, my signature ----- . | . V

  4. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion You didn't address any of my concerns though =P
  5. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion I wasn't questioning your expertise. I'm well aware that probably everyone on this website and everyone else who plays RPG on a regular or sporadic basis has more experience than myself.
  6. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion As a last thought.. have any of you played 4th edition D&D? It's not popular, I know, but they did fix alot of the problems we're talking about. Balance issues through the levels and between enemies. I actually encourage everyone to read the DM's Guide.. it has a lot of useful ideas.. despite being crappy 4th ed.
  7. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion Not necessarily. Again, I think it's a rather narrow view of the game, no offense intended. This idea is completely and utterly up to the DM. I also fail to see why this is problematic in the first place. It has more to do with the adventure, excitement, and drama then it does with a flaw in the experience point/level system. I feel this is rather rhetorical and almost offensive. Is the hero system really different when you consider the number of Skills, talents, powers and pieces of equipment that any character can obtain? I think it it vastly overshadows the complexity of D&D. I also think the planning and play testing is a matter of experience (real life experience, not point systems). People who knows all the ins and outs of Dungeons and Dragons, and i mean know, probably have no problem. And to all of this I might add that these battles are more about adventure and excitement, not precise equal matchings of apparent power levels. Fighting a Minotaur is cool... I'm gonna kill it easily, but it's still cool.
  8. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion Do you mind if I disagree with you? I was in almost total opposition to everything you said in the "D&D Level Oriented Antagonists". Firstly, I think you took a very narrow view of the possibilities Dungeons and Dragons can encompass. Whether your explanation was from personal experience only, or a more thought out opinion, I think it's untrue. Secondly, your description of leveling-up procedures is patently false. In my opinion, if a DM is doing his job correctly, the PCs should not stray too far from each other in terms of power, ability, or experience. The rules also state, that experience is awarded for defeating monsters and completing quests, which the rules then describe as a benefit granted to all characters equally. I realize it's not as obvious from the rules text as it is in Hero System, but Dungeon and Dragons can be a lot more flexible than some think. For example, in a campiagn I am in currently, the DM says we can level up once everyone in the party does something awesome, and we have to state our case to him. You can give a baseline experience per week; you could give experience based solely on roleplaying, or by any type of contribution to the party. But the DM, and the party members, have to make sure the rewards are spread equally and fairly. I don't find that the gaining of one ability, or spell, or even an entire level, with all of it's bonuses, can render "swathes of opposition obsolete". I will grant that the balancing formulas in D&D 3.5 aren't the greatest, but it's also up to the DM to decide what monsters to pit the PCs against. It's also rather implicit that the PC's judge their circumstances based on realism and roleplaying. They should not assume the power of their opponents and thus are partly responsible for the outcomes. I don't think this issue relates to varying experience point values. This is true of almost all games, and I daresay it's the whole purpose of those games. To grow and overcome challenges only to rise to a new, more powerful challenge. Can you honestly say that a superhero built with the Hero System rules is challenged equally by their arch nemesis and a normal joe-schmoe from the street? (I actually know a gentleman who dislikes Oblivion because the power levels of the enemies are scaled to match your character's).

  10. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion I agree 100%. You both hit the nail on the head and I think that's more of my style. I agree with this too. And to contrast Kilker Shrike's comment, if I interpreted it correctly, I think this is more of a conceptual result, rather than a statistical probability. Basically, when a character in D&D gets that powerful, he can do those things. When a Hero gets '410-points' can he wade through the masses without much cause for conern? Or are we in agreeance that these are two different systems? (I'm beginning to understand the bell curve thing, I think.) How did you come up with this equation, out of curiosity?
  11. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat He continually adresses you as if there were two people in the room, and then occasionally covers one eye and inspects things. (Like that hilarious Monty Python skit!)
  12. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion I'm enjoying the banter, but maybe this argument is unresolvable? I mean, we are talking about two different systems that have completely different rules. It's not surprising that they seem unreconcilable.
  13. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion Ah, perhaps, but the comparison is of converted D&D characters. So, perhaps a 350 points Cleric and a 350 Fighter might be tied, but I'm not saying how many points each is. It all depends on how you converted the character over from D&D. Logistically, any Fighter is most likely going to be slaughtered by any caster, especially if they have time to prepare. I personally don't know how to guage the power of 'spells' and physical defense and initiative just because I haven't played alot of Heroes. Actually.. lemme tell you a story... So I'm Darlan, the 6lvl Fighter/6lvl Disciple of Dispater (BoVD), clad in spiked black iron full-plate, wielding a large +4 Flaming scythe and a wicked smile. I had previously had an enoucter with the Mages Guild of Dunley; the result of my ignorance to their intolerance of lawful evil vikings. Fortunately I survived with no harm done; except a Geas! Of course, I also survived that, but only with the help of my evil determination and lust for revenge. So I lured a mage into a tavern with an anonymous note (delivered by a very cute messenger boy, whom I tipped well) simply wanting to guage the reaction. He showed up and began threatening to burn the place down if I didn't show myself. In my disguise, I tried to vacate, but somehow he knew it was me and grabbed my arm. Well... knowing his power, I wasn't going to let him get the drop on me! So, I pulled my scythe out of my extra-dimensional cape and layed the hate down on him. He had up buffs which I apprently didn't see. Then he side-stepped! and cast Greater Invisibility, but not before getting off a quickened Prismatic Spray.. Luckily I got the 40 points of fire damage. So, I summoned an Erinyes for her good eye-sight. By that time I was up to my neck in Evard's Black Tentacles and another 80 points of lightning damage. So, it was all up to my devil summon. With true seeing, his buffs were useless and 2 hits with her high base attack bonus and +2 Longbow would be too much for his powerful mind. I roll... 2. Miss. I roll again.... ...2. From there, he cast Maze on the Erinyes and then I could not bear to hear the rest of vivid descriptions.

  15. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat My cock? NT: Funny 'sign-offs' if you were a television news anchor.
  16. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion That's alot of craziness! But good work! Basically..that's alot of points though right? I'm a n00b so we should probably get someone else's opinion on that. And I'll restate my question in a different way.. If you converted a Fighter class, perhaps with lots of PD and maybe some magic items of some kind... who would win? The Cleric or the Fighter?
  17. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion Guys, this is a dumb argument. Besides, what I was mostly pointing out wasn't the power of the fighters, but the over-powering of the mages. For example, in a game I'm currently playing.. the 16th level Druid, who is also a salt mummy (how much of a level adjustment he has, I'm not sure, but his base caster level is less than 16.) He completely destroyed an entire city and nearly killed the entire 100,000+ population in a matter of minutes. How? With spells like blizzard, earthquake, some crazy fire spell and another which I think is called Pestilence. Basically the target of that spell starts taking CON damage but they also automatically transfer the disease to anyone they touch. So he targeted 'Paramedic-like' people and 'priest-like' people who were doing a lot of touching amidst the fire and fallen buildings. So, DM allowances and strict rules lawyering ASIDE.... my questions are these: 1. Can anyone get this powerful in Hero realistically? (It's realistic in D&D because the spells and levels of casters are clearly printed in the rules. You simply have to level up.) 2. If they can, or can come close, how does this translate in the conversion to Hero.
  18. Re: DnD 3.5 to HERO 5e Conversion Here's a question about the conversion: Everyone knows that, especially in 3.5, the power balance between melee classes and mage classes. The mantra in my game group goes something like this: "The game breaks at 15." How do you think these issues are changed in the Hero system? With the experience point system is it difficult for mages to acquire 'high level' spells while the meat-shield is just pumping points into BODY and STR? Or perhaps it's still in favour of mages due to charactistic maxima. What do you think? And how do you deal with realism problem in giving experience points?
  19. Re: Answers & Questions Q: What do nerds say to themselves when they spy a hottie at a comic book convention who's wearing a Sailor Jupiter costume and is bending over to rifle through her purse? A: Mhm. Oh ya.
  20. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat Ask her out on a date? (does that work with nerds now-a-days? lol) NT: Horrible things to say while on a date.
  21. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat Guys, he said subtle. LMAO // He wears a small metal pin on his breast pocket that he taps every-once-in-a-while and then begins to speak to no one in particular. NT: What you do when you're annoyed with your fellow gamers.

  24. Re: THE HERO SYSTEM EQUIPMENT GUIDE -- What Would *You* Like To See? Other then the fact that this probably should be discussed here, the problem with weapon damage is probably actually Hit points. And there are two ways of looking at it... On the one hand, if you were to assume that two well-slung rocks to the head were enough to kill someone, then ir really shouldn't matter what the damage is. Two slings you're dead, two shots with a weak handgun you're dead. Alternately, it simply hard to determine different amounts of damage when you're dealing with small Hit Point numbers, like 10 and you're only working with d6s. There's just only so many options. On the gamut of weapons from a punch to a rocket launcher, how can you possibly give each item inbetween an equal damage increment? But like I said, this probably shouldn't be discussed here, lol
