  1. Re: Best SuperHero Fights ever It also shows how expensive it would be to build Captain Marvel's Instant Change ability...
  2. Re: Best SuperHero Fights ever 142 posts, and no one mentioned my favorite... Cyclops versus the X-Men, X-Men #176 (one of the first X-comics I ever read). Mastermind uses his illusion powers to make the rest of the team think Cyclops is Dark Phoenix. Cyke had a few minutes to prepare, lures the rest of the team into a Danger Room simulation, and proceeds to take them down one by one. Best of all, he does so in such a way that his teammates recover just in time to catch up to him when he uncovers what Mastermind is doing. They even followed it up in #177 with Cyclops on his honeymoon with Madeline Pryor, taking on a giant squid after their plane crashes in the ocean...
  3. Re: New Universal I think I still have the majority of D.P. 7 and Psi Force boxed somewhere - those were my favorites. Justice was okay, but the bait and switch they did with the storyline was annoying.
  4. Re: New Universal I read the first 5 of New Universal, then I couldn't find it anymore. Was it cancelled?
  5. Re: Who are the top 5 most powerful characters in your Campaign. A bit of thread necromancy, but I'm reevaluating the heavy-hitters in my campaign and am curious if anyone else wants to chime in...
  6. Re: Twas The Night Before Christmas - Champions Style! 'Tis the season...
  7. Re: SFX for Darkness with IPE? I'm currently working on a character called Gremlin, who has an always-on Darkness with IPE (only versus senses with technological SFX). The visible effect is that the devices only see static or otherwise behave as if they're malfunctioning. Basically, the target can't sense it is Gremlin causing the effect (Hide Source), and may simply think his equipment is on the fritz (Hide Effects)
  8. Re: Mythic Creatures as Eco-Terrorists? One thing I've found out while working on this - Wikipedia may not be a definitive source, but it works well enough when you're researching mythological concepts. Lots of good ideas to mine there...
  9. Re: Flying Dodge It's not a rules mystery - it's a logic problem. Everything assumes that the character with Flying Dodge aborts and completes his move before the attack goes off...unless he goes behind cover. Then it's assumed that the attack occurred before the character goes behind cover...even though you use the range modifier based on the end point (which, in this case, IS behind cover). And the explanation given ("The attacker’s attack might hit just as the character starts his Flying Dodge or the like") doesn't match up with how things actually play out by the rules.
  10. Re: Conversion of M&M Archetypes as HDC files At first glance, the characters look a bit tough for standard 350-point supers, though it may just be personal taste. 11. Re: Mythic Creatures as Eco-Terrorists? I'm going to stay away from mythic people like Paul Bunyon and Johnny Appleseed, as I am definitely looking for creatures - those who wouldn't seamlessly blend into society in their true form. Besides...Paul Bunyon could take on an entire superteam by himself - especially with his Follower assisting him! The dragon idea is good, though I already have two dragons in my campaign world - one is a superheroine (and former PC), while the other was her brother (a villain and one of her Hunteds). Maybe an affiliated creature, but not a formal part of the group? I'm definitely looking at a werecreature or the Minotaur to fill a second brick spot on the team. The Minotaur in combination with Medusa and Siren would push the group over to a strong Greek theme, though. I'd prefer to avoid zombie (that's moving from living creature to undead horror), and archangel has some religious connotations I'd rather not deal with. The elf/faerie idea is another good one. The main problem is figuring out which one - there are so many takes on it in mythology that it's hard to choose. Changelings, spriggans...I could come up with almost any character type by drawing on faerie tales.
  12. Re: Next scene: Foxbat... I could probably forgive Dan DiDio if his only target was Foxbat.
  13. Re: Can Openner? A bit cheezy, but here you go... Rapid Temperature Shifts - Changes the temperature within a person's body back and forth between 98.6 and freezing several times over the course of a second. This causes most human beings to pass out from the stress to their system. Energy Blast 3d6 (vs. ED), No Normal Defense (Immunity to Cold or non-human physiology; +1), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1), Autofire (5 shots; +1/2), Non-Standard Attack Power (+1) (67 Active Points) AND +4 OCV with Rapid Temperature Shifts (8 Active Points) Total of 75 Active Points
  14. Re: Alternate Earth/WWYCD - Enough? The masses have spoken. I'll go back to lurking.
  15. Re: Flying Dodge Has anyone found the following two quotes from the Combat Handbook to be contradictory? So, even though the rules model a highly dynamic situation, where the attack might hit just as the character starts the Flying Dodge...it still allows an automatic avoidance of melee attacks?
  16. Re: Alternate Earth/WWYCD - Enough? Looks like we posted at about the same time. See my previous post for examples. The problem is that, at least this morning when I came to the board and saw nothing but WWYCD-type threads, there has been a monopolization. I think the threads can be fun...in moderation. But it's at the point where the board is filled to overflowing with them, and it looks like the people starting the topics are running out of ideas. I fully expect the next one to be something like, "Illusio makes your character look like a fire hydrant, and there are a pack of dogs nearby. WWYCD?" While it would be a stretch to say I like all of the WWYCD threads, I do find several to be interesting. In fact, if there were less of them, I'd probably like them a lot more, as they would be new and different instead of treading over the same material over and over. Anyway, I've given examples above, and I have posted one myself as well: * Mythic Creatures as Eco-Terrorists? We'll see what happens.
  17. Re: Mythic Creatures as Eco-Terrorists? I'd like all the members to be capable of independent thought...but if I can come up with a sentient golem idea that fits the mythological creature team, I'll put it in. Siren fills the mentalist role...and considering how amorous satyrs are supposed to be, the last potential candidate for that role is probably a statue now...
  18. Re: Alternate Earth/WWYCD - Enough? I've been doing #1, and some of #2. Howegver, while I've started or contributed to a few conversations that I want to have, spamming the board with a bunch of topics just to try and overcome the sheer number of WWYCD threads isn't good board etiquette (and I'm not interested in fighting fire with fire). There's been some very interesting threads of late: * How do you improve your HERO-fu? * Brainstorming European bad guys? * Quote of the Week from my gaming group... (a personal favorite!) * Query's Art & Stuff Thread * Giant Brick Tricks Any other threads people can suggest that may have been overlooked?
  19. Folks, we've got a ton of Alternate Earth and What Would Your Character Do? threads floating around here. They all basically say, "talk about your character", which is one of the top ten no-nos for gamers. How many times have you groaned inwardly when someone has said to you, "Let me tell you about my character..."? One thread is fun, a few threads are fine...but roughly half of the threads for the Champions board (including 8 of the 10 most recent) is too much... How about we hold back on talking about our characters for a bit, and talk about something else for a change?
  20. Re: Brainstorming European bad guys? I really like these two, especially the Golem. The only problem with the Vengeance is that it kind of treads the same ground that the Golem does, so you'll have to work to make it different and unique. Maybe there is one Jewish spirit stronger than the others that takes control, seeking out vengeance while the other spirits (including several unwilling ones) are carried along. Maybe the spirit in control changes from moment to moment, so you can never predict exactly what it's going to do...
  21. Re: Next scene: Foxbat... ...filled with concentrated acid. . . . What?
  22. Re: Alternate Earth #22—World of your Dreams You know, while these threads can be fun, blitzing the board with 10 or more of them at once is uncool. It completely obliterates any other conversations that are occurring in favor of a "post about your character" thread. Seeing nothing but "Alternate Worlds" and "What Would Your Character Do?" on the first page of the message board is very disappointing.
  23. Re: Mythic Creatures as Eco-Terrorists? Well, since I've gotten a few responses, I'm going to go ahead and post the original lineup. I never got a chance to unveil the full group when they were first used, though the hero with a magic background got to meet a few of them. Mythos: * Medusa - leader, transformation powers (turn to stone) + magic VPP * Siren - energy projector/mentalist, sonic EB, mind control * Troll - brick, growth, regeneration + high recovery * Dryad - group transport, nature powers, global-range teleportation (through plants) * Gremlin - martial artist, technology drain, darkness vs tech only I also had a sixth member, but I don't remember the specifics. I think it was either Centaur (bow specialist) or Fenris (werewolf with killing attacks). Medusa was actually quite beautiful (20 COM) despite having snakes for hair. She had partial control over her curse, though she had a psych lim that she had to use her gaze attack if she was looking at a person she had fallen in love with. She is the oldest of the group, hailing from ancient Greece. She's learned a fair amount of magic, so she can cast spells in addition to turning people to stone or having her snakes bite people. Siren was the second oldest member of the group, also from ancient Greece. In addition to her captivating song, she has a sonic scream that can be used to attack. She also breathes water and swims quite fast. Troll was the third oldest member of the group. Very big (twice as tall as a human) and strong, heals from almost anything. Also smarter than the legends would have you believe. The group is not sure how old Dryad is. While her lifeforce is linked to a tree, there are hints that it actually migrates from one tree to another over the centuries. Dryad herself has very little sense of time (which can be a problem when the plan involves her retrieving the group). Medusa recruited her after saving her tree from being cut down by loggers. She can transport herself and others from one plant to another, as long as the plant is taller than the largest person being transported (which, as I recall, was the one problem with having a growth-based character in the group). She also had other nature powers (AoE Entangle in areas with plants, etc). The last character I can distinctly remember is Gremlin. He's actually from a clan of goblins who discovered his effect on technology around the turn of the century. His clan was enthralled by airplanes, and would hitch rides on them during the World Wars. However, given the effect the creatures had on technology, several died as the planes malfunctioned and crashed. He's small (1 level of Shrinking), but is a skilled fighter. I gave him martial arts, with claws as a weapon element (though he rarely used the claws). He also had an always-on Darkness field versus technology - any technological device used to look at the area would show only static. I'm not sure who to keep, and who to replace with someone else...though I like the idea of having Medusa being the group's leader. She fills a similar role to Taurus, for those who read The Zodiac Conspiracy (which was actually a decent Champions suppliment).
  24. Hello, everyone. I'm working on more ideas for my new Champions campaign, and one thing I'm revamping is a group called Mythos. The group is composed of creatures from the mythic world who are upset about rampant industrialization, pollution, and general destruction of the natural world. Their primary targets are high-tech corporations that care little about the environment, thus giving the heroes a bit of dilemma when it comes to stopping the villains. Now, I have a general lineup from the last time I used them (back in the early 90's). However, rather than list what I used 15 years or so ago, I'd like to hear from others on who they think should be in the group, and why. My original choices were based more on what would be easy to writeup and/or fun to use against the PCs. This time around, I want to focus more on personalities and theme. I've gotten good enough to write up most concepts, and I'm now more concerned with what is fun for the players instead of what is fun for me to use against them. One final note: these don't have to be nonhuman monsters - they can be part human or even mostly human. I'd actually prefer that the leader have some human traits, so that the group focuses more on destroying institutions than committing genocide against the human race (I run a low-lethality game).
