  1. Re: Thinking Differently About SPD I would say that is mostly true and given the point based system and nature of the game who can really blame them. I can't as I would do the same. However in Damocles I have a Speed spread of 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, and 6. Since the characters are an odd total of 396+14 GGU package they had lots of points to spend. Hawksmoor
  2. Re: Thinking Differently About SPD Right. Which means SPEED is not for Speedster archetypes. It means that it should not be tied to an attack/damage schema. It means that the only use for SPEED is to allow for a certain number of actions a turn. SPEED is the single most important mechanic in the game, as it defines so much of how the game actually works. Yet, SPEED is the most commonly misunderstood mechanic since it means something totally different depending on who is using it. Hawksmoor Oh and Zornwil: Thanks for the Rep!
  3. Re: Thinking Differently About SPD The only problem is that SPEED score is often used differently depending on the side of the GMs screen you happen to be sitting on. Players get one set of rules (Speed is for low DEF, low attack speedsters) and the GM gets a different set (Speed is for megavillians or supremely accomplished foes). That is not what Speed is IMHO. Speed is the number of actions you can take in a turn of combat. That is all. Works for all players and GM characters and doesn't morph into a weird class-like system. Regardless of what Gary is likely to say when he finds this thread. Hawksmoor
  4. Re: Thinking Differently About SPD In my game, I should say old game my wife made us chuck the HERO system (what can I say she didn't like the tactical aspects of combat), normals were Speed 2 and Supers were Speed 4. No one spent points on Speed as a house rule except where required to achieve Speed 4 and everyone did fine. The speedster, Blue Streak, had lots of powerstunts with her magical speedster powers like AE Line "Move-bys" and Transforms "Do everything 1 million times faster". Her Speed score was not essential for her to shine as a speedster. Her Powers made her a speedster. Hawksmoor
  5. Re: Prone Problems Makes sense. However prone is different from what we commonly think of as knocked flat on the back. That would be supine. Supine = 1/2 DCV Prone = 1/2 HtH DCV and full ranged DCV Makes sense to me. Hawksmoor

  7. Re: Hero is broken Skills, and the opposite of HERO....Gadgets that were too affordable for their in game utility. Other than that it is a great system, and one that I am playing again. My wife gave up HERO as too hard, to game mechanic driven (Have you really seen the combat rules? Can you say Warhammer 3000k? I knew that you could.) and in general too much HERO for her to have fun with. So we are switching to DC Heroes as of now for our Solo games. Hawksmoor
  8. Re: where would I find Sentinel and Justice Squad write ups? They don't exist. You have to write them up yourself or join me and others in urging Steve and Darren to write an Allies book instead of wasting time on projects like Everyman. Hawksmoor
  9. Re: What do you think... They can't. They will always be the people that dropped the tanker on City X. Working like mad in the hours and days after the incident will help, but if anyone knows they by their own actions caused the tanker to fall then well it looks bad for them. Outlaw Hero perhaps? Avoiding the media and the cops as they stop the bad guys. Avoiding UNTIL and PRIMUS agents as well as VIPER? Getting offers to come and work for Eurostar since they obviously know how to thrown down. Hawksmoor -I'd rewind time though.
  10. Re: What do you think... Actually they might be close depending on the flight powers of the team. You can add inches of flight to str under the right circumstances. Now the event has already happened but a 2km fall as Cancer said would take about 20 seconds at least. That is bizarely plenty of time to come up with a solution. If the team could stop it they might have been able to divert it to a lower population area or at least slow the plummet so the impact was less. Of couse the tanker would rupture the three layer membrane and double hull upon any impact but true heroes could have found some way around it. Now to lay out a small thought: Rewind time. Let the PCs do it all over again. Say a precog from the city sees herself die in the incident. She then goes to the Heroes and says "I saw myself die today. You can't do what you are planning on doing. If you do lots of people will die." You don't actually have to break the game on the boneheaded decisions of the players. Hawksmoor
  11. Re: What do you think... I meant *all* superheroes. Everywhere. -The team in question are another matter entirely. Serious psychological issues for them I suspect. Only the casual killer can get off scott free emotionally. Then there is the world wide suspicion that they caused the accident. The authorities are going to get involved and the result could be serious jail time and if the character's are backed by a philanthropic organization civil lawsuits. Hawksmoor
  12. Re: What do you think... And suddenly the PCs are either told to retire (a la the Incredibles) or are forced to by an adminstration that has to been seen as cracking down on dangerous Metahumans. Hawksmoor
  13. Re: What do you think... Ah...real world physics. But these are the comics of super action heroes (and the RPG that portrays them) thus the tanker slows down, its fall is arrested and moving slowly under the vast bulk the hero flies the laden tanker to the harbor setting it down past the Coast Guard cordon where clean up crews are already being dispatched. That is comic book physics. Of course Comic Book Physics also have the tanker detonating and taking out half of downtown and covering the rest in burning crude sludge. Hawksmoor
  14. Re: What do you think... Shows you what most heroes think about situations they get in. Punch first, rescue bystanders second. This I believe comes from the fact that HERO evolved very strongly from table top wargaming (disagree? look at the movement and combat systems...HERO can be played as a WH2K game) and thus there are few systems for interaction resolution and XPs are not expressly awarded to motivate more peaceful methods. I would have the characters really, really examine the impact of their actions as they certainly doubled or tripled the impact of a 9/11 type event on a major city. Hawksmoor
  15. Re: An unusual use of the DNPC disad... Spooky!!! McKoy get outta my brain! Hawksmoor
  16. Re: An unusual use of the DNPC disad... Didn't Deadpool have a DNPC like this? I would make the DNPC a part of the base since she is going to be there if the Base is invaded. Plus she is certainlygoing to either be all Stockholm Syndrome or itching to divulge all the info she has on her captor. "Well Mr. Imperious if you think you are so fearless I'll just tell them about the nightlight OK?" Hawksmoor
  17. Re: Supers With Pictures: Fun For All You only need two because of the aptly named Speed Rebate. The character is pretty lean but reducing the EGO to 11 (another breakpoint) will give you the 4 ECV and free up the 2 CP you need for the 29 DEX. Hawksmoor
  18. Re: Supers With Pictures: Fun For All Or you could just up her DEX to 29 since the goal seems to be the higher Skill Rolls and the OCV/DCV. Hawksmoor
  19. Re: Supers With Pictures: Fun For All It is a PCism. PCs play with points and NPCs do not. Hence a starting PC has minmaxing all over the place and DEX is the most common target of finding breakpoints. 28 DEX is a stopover point to the important 29 DEX breakpoint. This is why I always up Nighthawk's DEX to 26 because 25 is just a lousy number. 27 is better because even though it is not a efficiency breakpoint it allows you to go faster than those using DEX 26. But DEX 28 has less benefit and is thus weird. You are welcome. Hawksmoor
  20. Re: I'm going to have a WHAT? Actually the fetus is quite well protected from normal falling and bumping and bruising etc. 12" of Knockback might be another matter entirely. Just do what seems appropriate at the time and realize that the situation will change as the pregnancy continues. Oh and don't forget about the moodswings! Pregnant women are notorious for moodswings. Hawksmoor
  21. Re: Supers With Pictures: Fun For All Susano There appears to be some problem with your program a 28 DEX (wierd number) generates a 9.333 (round to 9) Combat Value not a 10. OTOH I like the character...just the sort of NPC to show up in Synergy's Sensundan One Game. Hawksmoor
  22. Re: I'm going to have a WHAT? In my wife's solo games we have had lots of pregnacies. What is it about female Plumber archetypes that make them want to have the experience of motherhood in games? Wait a sec don't answer that. I already know the answer. I've been her GM for 13 years. Believe me I *know* the answer. Back on topic. What ever your player is willing to put up with is the answer. If she thinks a Sue Storm "Gee if I have another contraction again the universe will explode!" pregnancy or a Rowena Jaws-of-Death Get of Fenris Ahroun "Oh a pup? Who knew? Ah well more killing to do!" pregnancy is the way to go that is what you as a GM have to do. As Nexus's flame war thread points out people have certain expectations when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. In the end the player gets the final say on what is acceptable. YMMV. Hawksmoor
  23. Copied this from the HERO Questions Forum. I wanted to address the answer in a place I could actually respond. I would say not. You can jerry rig, like Simon says, a Private Adder to represent the OIHID. But Skill Enhancers are like mini power frameworks for skills. Such a drastic change is beyond a simple OIHID. Stylistically I would think that Multiform is the power to use. I know, I know never use a power to represent something a limitation could do better, but in this case the character is getting like the Wisdom of Solomon. Hold on a Sec. Why not buy INT (only to make skill rolls) OIHID instead? Makes the character better at the skills she knows without having to resort to a clunky skill enhancer. Hawksmoor
  24. Re: Help with villain description/powers What they said. Primarily for me it would be minor effect always on Change Environment with personal immunity no range, adding on the SFX that he is not from this reality. Hawksmoor
  25. Re: Help with villain description/powers I would also give him Full Life Support. He is essentially out of the Tapestry of Fate as it were so no normal environmental effects are going to harm him. Flight because what is gravity but just another law that doesn't apply to him. Teleport because space too is just for those who live *here*, our boy doesn't have that problem. Finally 75% Resistant Damage Reduction Physical and Energy. After all nothing in this reality really effects him does it? Hawksmoor
