  1. Duplication is one of the few powers I've never used in a character build before.

Best general advice I can give is to look for the 'chink in armor' you can live with.

The first option that come to mind would be some sort of time limit (possible sfx is a personal time-fugue).

  2. Martial DCs don't cost END by default.

I think the -1/4 default Limitation on HA is about right considering that the damage adding rules heavily encourage using Advantages on HA instead of STR directly.  HA is almost never the only option to build an effect. It only becomes the optimal one when there is a desire to include Advantages.

The only way to create better balance between all the different base abilities that do damage would probably require a complete costing overhaul that would likely end the cornerstone 5 points per DC that STR and Blast currently use.

Killing Attack is an easier example to begin with.

The current Ranged/HTH split could be recreated with a single Killing Attack power that costs 10 points per 3 DC but includes a requirement to choose 1 of 2 mandatory Advantages (Range or STR adds to damage.  Of course there is always the option of eliminating Killing Attack as a Power and making it an Advantage (similar to what was done with the the morphing of Damage Resistance into the Resistant Advantage).  I think this a bad idea because it removes damage variety by effectively tripling the number of dice rolled for killing damage which puts the bell-curve like consistency of adding more dice front and center.

The equivalent for HA would need to involve Blast as well as STR and would cause some wonky rounding issues if 3 points was the base.  The only solution to this that I can see is to add granularity (more points) which would throw off the costing structure for the entire system.

I live in a rabbit hole sometimes but this is more like a prairie dog city in the complexity involved.

  3. Re: the original question of whether the Naked Autofire build could be applied to both Ranged & HTH attacks.

I don't know of a specific rule that says no but I believe most GM's would say 2 separate builds would be necessary just based on the sfx. Throwing daggers means the character needs to actually have that many daggers on their person. An Autofire HTH attack would typically be made with a single dagger. That difference alone seems enough to require a separate build to me.

  4. The list of different genres supported by HERO 4e did not include Star Hero.

The 1st edition of Star Hero was an all in one stand alone product released during the same era as Champions 1e-3e, Fantasy Hero 1e, Justice, Inc., Espionage! and Danger International.

Star Hero for 5e and 6e are similar to the Champions source books for those editions of HERO in that they did not include the core rules.

*The link in my sig below My gaming collection listed on RPGGeek.com contains every HERO product (including 3rd party) that I am currently aware of.  There is a small smattering of non-HERO stuff listed as well.

This post contains a pic of my current physical collection.

  5. re: Invisibility vs. Hearing

I recently read somewhere that Black Panther has Vibranium soles on the shoes of his uniform which allow him to walk silently on any surface (Invisibility vs. Hearing plus IPE on Running).

I am pretty sure that he could run right over a 'crystalized floor' an still not make a sound.  This is why I was very careful in my suggestion about Change Environment since it would only impose a penalty to a Stealth roll but would have zero effect on Invisiblity vs. Hearing.

  6. re: Regeneration

from an old 5er post I made in 2009:

29 Regeneration - Triggered Per Wound: Healing BODY 1d6+1 (standard effect: 4 points), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Persistent (+1/2), Trigger (Activating the Trigger is an Action that takes no time, Trigger resets automatically, immediately after it activates; Whenever takes BODY; +1), Decreased Re-use Duration (1 Turn; (5er, page 188) This Advantage allows a character to apply Healing more than once a day.; +1 1/2) (58 Active Points); Self Only (-1/2), Always On (-1/2)
[Notes: Each wound needs to be tracked separately because although 2 BODY is immediately applied on the Phase a particular wound occurs it doesn't occur again for that same wound until 12 additional Phases have passed.] - END=0

This would work on any number and size of wounds. It's just a bookkeeping nightmare. It would still be possible to kill a character with this ability, it would just require several attacks that each cause the loss of 3+ BODY in a short period of time to overwhelm. The Armor approach can only be breached by attacks that exceed it's defense.

The argument for just using a certain amount of Resistant defenses instead is really no different than the one for a speedster's rapid flurry of punches to be built with a single HA without the use of the Autofire Advantage (and all the added gametime calculations that it would require).

  7. It's unique to Damage Negation.

    from 6e1 page 183:

    USING DAMAGE NEGATION
A character applies his Damage Negation to an incoming attack before applying his other defenses. Before the attacker makes the Effect Roll for his attack, he reduces it to account for the Damage Negation. (See the Damage Class table on 6E2 97 for an easy reference for the effects of removing DCs from attacks, depending on their base cost and/or Advantages.) The effect of the attack is then rolled normally and the character applies his regular defenses, Damage Reduction, and any other defensive abilities. Calculate the Knockback (if applicable) from the damage the attacker actually rolls, not from the DCs of the attack before Subtraction.
