  1. Re: What's the best way to learn Hero? So would it be better to use the perk to signify the military rank instead of the profession skill? or should I use both? Cheers Shem
  2. Re: What's the best way to learn Hero? Thanks to everyone for their positive feedback of Jack. To answer a few questions asked; I don't have any plans to run a SG style game at the moment, I was just drawing on the series for inspiration, I was thinking that I could create the rest of SG-1 and then some 'baddies' and then use these as a base for trying out combat. I will definitely create characters by hand as well, I can see that it might be a bad idea to become reliant on HD as I'll never have a grasp of the maths. Also, thansk for suggestions on HD and different ideas for the character. I was wondering what sort of points level I should construct 'thugs' to. In this case Jafar warriors, presumably you wouldn't point them at 150 Cheers again Shem
  3. Re: What's the best way to learn Hero? As per KA's suggestion I have created a heroic level character, I was trying to think of character concepts and was struggling, so i turned to TV for inspiration and thought of Stargate SG1. So please feel free to give feedback. Also I was using Hero Designer, and was having an issue with a couple of area, I know there is a specific HD forum, but would like to keep this post in one place for now. In sidekick there are ranged skill levels, but they do not appear in HD. Also, ho do I do equipment in HD for a heroic character? Do I create the weapon, e.g. Firearm as the power and then add it to the equipment section? If so how does the pointing work? Cheers in advance for any suggestions. 4. Re: What's the best way to learn Hero? Will do I've found these boards to be the most active and supportive boards that I've been on when it comes to game discussion, thanks all! Shem
  5. Re: What's the best way to learn Hero? Thanks to everyone for the good advice. The common themes seem to be, learn by doing, this seems to relate for learning combat and creating characters/powers. Solo combat seems to be a key tool. D&D was what I cut my teeth on, recently I have played D20, Heroquest, and Torg. Thanks again to everyone who has given me food for thought. Shem
  6. Hi all, I am still very new to the Hero system and was wondering what ways people used to learn the system when they started out. I know that education is very subjective and everyone learns differently, but some examples would be useful. I have already bought the core book and several other books, and I could easily, over time, sit and read them all through, but will I know the system? Obviously a system as crunchy as this could and probably should never be committed to memory. I'm currently reading the powers section of Fred but have started skimming them, just to give myself an idea of the 'concept' of the power, rather than learn it verbatim. That way when creating ideas I will know where to look, rather than try and retain everything. Unfortunately I am not in a position to game with the system at present, so it's pretty much me and the books, and the great forums here of course. Any suggestions will be greatfully received. Shem
  7. Re: Growing love for Star Hero and Sci-Fi games. I was thinking about this again today as I am about to start running a B5 D20 game and I think there are 2 closely linked problems. 1) it is a shift from high fantasy powerful 'niche' characters/powers to generally lower power level, more skill based, less obvious character archetypes. 2) And one of the offshoots of this dawned on me this morning, it is harder to give PC's cool rewards. Where are the rewards in Star Trek? "I'm doing this for the good of man of course, I don't need paying?". So you get players saying "Where's my groovy +5 sword of megadeath vs anyone but me?" The answer, well I don't actually have one, the best I can suggest is try and make sure the PC's all have a schtick. Let them choose an aspect and let them excel at it, this way everyone has a role again. If the PC wants to be good with Computers let them be great, reward 'him'with a super-duper AI tool that makes him better. My 2 credits worth.
  8. Re: Growing love for Star Hero and Sci-Fi games. Well I love babylon 5, and I think that you could sell it as Dark Champions in space, and given the popularity of Dark Champions at the moment, you could try to hang on it's coat tails.
  9. Re: Spiffiest Power Name? A character of mine from a different system had the following; Make People Nervous Feel No Guilt Sleep Anywhere Runs like a Young Man and another had Dramatic Entrance
  10. I've never been very good at pigeon-holing things into different genres, so I was hoping for thoughts on this. The Mask of Zorro was on tv today and It started me thinking about putting him into Hero Terms and then I started considering genres, would you consider Zorro to be a pulp character. He seems to me to fit that style as he has similar traits to Indiana Jones who I would consider to be a pulp character. But the year doesn't match my perception of the pulp genre which is a circa 1920's detective story. So is my perception of pulp correct? Is pulp a style or a set period of time? Cheers Shem
  11. Re: Conversion: the Cleave Feat I don't know if it is the same in the US as the UK, but my local book shop (Ottaka's) stocks the core D20 books, and as long as you can provide them with the ISBN number of the book they should be able to order it in for you, it saves trying to hunt down a genre specific shop. Hope that helps. Shem
  12. Re: Favorite Pulp Character If Indiana Jones is there then Brandan Frasers character from the Mummy movies must be close behind. I thought they were pretty decent modern pulp movies. Shem
  13. Phew! Thanks for all the replies. That makes me feel better, now I can spend more money on the other books first Shem
  14. Hi all, i have recently invested in a copy of Hero after a friend of mine has been raving about it for what seems like forever. I am really getting into it and love the idea of the system, although the mechanics are still 'clunky in my head' I need more practice.... Anyway I saw on the upcoming release schedule that there is a revised edition of Hero being released fairly soon. i see that it has reprints for the errata (not bothered about that as I have doctored my copy) Different pieces that seem to be availabale for download (so not too worried about that) But to cut a long story short, too late... HAve I bought my copy too early, will I need to replace it in a couple of months or can I get by with what I have and the website? Any insight will be much appreciated as I'm sure I cannot be the ONLY one in this position. Many thanks Shem
