  6. Re: Nobuo Matsuri, Ninja Papa Hair Snipe: Nobuo plucks a hair from his head, and flicks it into the mouth of the attacking animal, aiming for the throat. This causes the beast to calm down and pay attention to the tickling in its throat until it's cleared. The downsides of the technique are a) you have to be directly in front of the animal's maw, usually while it's attacking you; and the hair you use will never grow back, and Nobuo's balding as it is. The first three volumes of "Ninja Papa" are legally available through JManga. It is an 18+ title (Nobuo and Aya have an active sex life.)

He's deceptively fat-looking; under that initial soft layer, he's all muscle. Nobuo has full lips, a thick nose, pudgy cheeks, small beady eyes, and a mole between his eyebrows. People are constantly amazed he landed such a hot wife. In civilian life, Nobuo wears a cheap salaryman suit or other low-brow middle-class garb. His "ninja" outfit is the generic black "mook ninja" outfit made popluar by the media. In civvies, Nobuo has a nervous habit of scratching his head; this vanishes entirely when he's in ninja mode. BACKGROUND Nobuo Matsuri is a typical Japanese salaryman. He has a low-paying, dead-end job in customer service at Bataph Foods, an incompetent boss who treats him like dirt, a mother-in-law who constantly nags him and his lovely wife about his shortcomings, and two young children that find him kind of embarrassing. But Nobuo is also a renegade ninja, formerly the top assassin of the Nakuru clan. When he fell in love, Nobuo broke the Iron Law, and has been sentenced to death. Nobuo loves his wife and his family, his ordinary job (even if his idiot boss gets on his nerves) and his ordinary life. Unfortunately, every so often assassins from his clan track him down and he must kill them. More troublingly, Nobuo often finds himself in circumstances where reason and negotiation don't work and those close to him are in mortal danger. Then he must reluctantly use his ninja skills to eliminate the problem PERSONALITY Nobuo is a sweet-tempered, patient man who hates violence and killing. He often seems like a polite pushover and is often taken advantage of by others. But when he must, he becomes once again the cold, merciless assassin he was raised to be. Nobuo loves his wife and family, and will do anything to protect them...even his awful mother-in-law. He's also loyal to his co-workers, and prides himself on giving good customer service. QUOTE "Cut or be cut...both are hell. But either way, in hell...I will speak love." POWERS/TACTICS Nobuo is trained in the use of ninja weapons and skills, and is amazingly fast for a man of his bulk. He's capable of killing a full-sized man with two fingers using the Full Moon Finger attack He has access to a variety of ninja weapons and gimmicks, but will only have one or two on his person at a time. Nobuo prefers not to kill, and will attempt to use reason and negotiation to solve problems. Often, he will find excuses to give opponents a second or even third chance to repent, or at least back the hell off. If this fails, he will kill the target as quickly and painlessly as possible. CAMPAIGN USE Nobuo Matsuri is the main character of "Ninja Papa", created by Yasuhito Yamamoto beginning in 2006. His obvious use is in Ninja Hero but he'd also fit in a Dark Champions game that doesn't mind a little comedy. Player characters might investigate why there are reports of Nakuru clan ninja fighting each other, and corpses killed using their methods that neither the police or the media seem to be investigating. Or they might be called in because terrorists have made threats against Bataph Foods' employees and Nobuo must try to conceal his ninja activities while helping out against the attackers. If Nobuo needs to be more powerful, pump his DEX and combat levels, and give him some defenses, If he needs to be less powerful, remove his "superpowers" and be just a normal ninja. Nobuo Hunts only those that are a direct threat to the lives of those he cares about. He'll gladly back off if someone shows they;re not a menace anymore. _Supporting Characters_ Aya: Age 28, still has her good looks and excellent figure, even after having two children. She's deeply in love with her husband Nobuo, and firmly believes in his goodness. She is supposedly unaware that he's an actual ninja, but may just have the good sense not to let on. Sora: Ten years old, athletic, is sometimes disappointed by his "uncool" father but loves him anyway. Umi: Eight years old, bright, has inherited her father's nose. Is appreciative of her father's protectiveness and believes in him. Mother in Law: A horrid hag who is deeply disappointed that her lovely daughter married such a loser and loses no opportunity to remind him of this. Lives with Nobuo's family, and was a co-signer on the mortgage. She has a bad hip. One chapter indicates that she's actually a formidable secret martial artist in her own right, but it's unclear how seriously the reader is supposed to take it. Manager: A bitter forty-five-year old who's the boss of the customer service department. An incompetent who has risen as high as he can thanks to the Peter Principle, Manager is sexist, racist, lazy and is more concerned that his workers come in on time than that they actually give good customer service. He's abusive to his subordinates and a lickspittle to those above him. He is trapped in a loveless arranged marriage and has two children who he rarely sees by his own preference. Gives really bad advice. Noguchi: An attractive office lady in the customer service department who admires Nobuo for his integrity and kind nature. She was sexually assaulted in college, and has a strong distrust of most men, especially lecherous ones. Her career has largely stalled out due to her habit of sticking up for herself and her co-workers, especially to the Manager. She's quite outspoken and dignified, which the Manager finds unbecoming in a "girl". She's attracted to the mysterious "ninja" who saved her from attempted rape one night, but is unaware that was Nobuo.
  8. Re: Australian Supervillains Horrific idea: Captain Cliche, who has kangaroo powers. He wanted to call himself The Kangaroo, but the press, heroes and other villains all laughed and stuck him with his current nom de guerre. He's actually pretty competent, but gets zero respect, and newbie Australian heroes aren't considered fully accepted until they've managed to beat him at least once.

She wears her black hair in a bob and goes fairly heavy on the makeup. She prefers wearing sensible pantsuits cut to hide her shoulder holster, but will dress up for formal occasions. BACKGROUND Doll is the top detective working for the Sunshine Hotel Group, which has over 150 luxury hotel locations in seventy countries. Doll was born in Japan, but abandoned shortly thereafter and was adopted from the orphanage by an American couple. They were a happy family until her brother Bob was born. Doll's adoptive father became resentful of her, and favored Bob. This culminated in a house fire where he rejected Doll's help to escape, instead turning to the physically weaker Bob, burdening him so that neither could escape. What happened to the adoptive mother is unknown. Her best friend as a child was Rose Conners, the then sheriff's daughter. After her adoptive father began resenting her, Doll thought of Sheriff Conners as a parental figure. She also knew a troublemaking boy named Gilbert, who became sheriff years later. This also ended in tragedy when Gilbert raped Rose and killed Mr. Conners in an attempt to cover it up. Her detective training was under a man named Charlie Braun. That ended when a man named Tom caused his girlfriend to commit suicide and Charlie retired. Years later, Charlie encountered Tom by chance, murdered his enemy and then forced Doll to kill him in a shootout. Recently, Doll discovered that her birth mother is now a "mama" for a Ginza hostess club. They've met, but chose not to acknowledge the relationship. PERSONALITY Doll is a calm and resourceful woman. While polite and able to empathize with her guests' situations, Doll is also a very private person who does not like talking about her past, and indeed has legally changed her name to just "Doll" . Doll appears to be asexual, or possibly just completely unwilling to enter into sexual or romantic relationships. She drinks sparingly and has not been seen to smoke. Her one point of pride is doing her job well. Her one weakness appears to be a soft spot for young men that resemble her deceased brother, and she will go out of her way to help one. QUOTE "My responsibility is protecting the guests of the Sunshine Hotel." POWERS/TACTICS Doll has no superhuman powers, but is a skilled detective, marksman and martial artist and can sense when she's being watched. Her preferred firearm is the Smith &^ Wesson .22 Magnum revolver, model 53. She uses a variety of ammo loads, including armor-piercing rounds and hollowpoint. She keeps a backup knife in her hair, but dislikes using it. CAMPAIGN USE Doll is the main character of "Doll: the Hotel Detective", created by Takao Saito (who also did Golgo 13) starting in 1980.She's a fairly specialized character--if the story takes place in or involves her hotel chain, she'll be active, otherwise not. She'd make a good contact for player characters, both detective types and wealthy jet-setters. If she needs to be more powerful, up her combat-related characteristics some. You shouldn't need to make her weaker. She will not Hunt characters further than the hotel grounds, but call in the police instead. Note that by the present day, her Social Limitation is pretty much no longer an issue except in certain patriarchal cultures, Contrariwise, if the game is set prior to 1980, the limitation will be worth much more. So, your thoughts and comments?

  11. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities In re "don't like, don't read"--I am reminded of a letter to the editor in the Minneapolis paper quite a bit ago. This was back when Howard Stern first got syndicated on a local radio station. They launched an advertising campaign featuring buxom young women in skimpy clothing, including one highway billboard just before the busiest intersection coming into downtown, with the young woman in question bending over to show maximum cleavage. The letter writer admitted that he was a bit of a prude, and that not everyone objected to seeing skimpily-clad women posed suggestively. "If I don't want to see it in movies, I don't go to those movies. If I don't want to see it in magazines, I don't buy that kind of magazine. If I don't want to see it on television, I can change the channel, or better yet shut it off. But I think it is asking too much of me to make me close my eyes while I'm driving!" So erotica in its place, fine, but if it's in things that should theoretically be accessible to people who don't want erotica, not so good.
  12. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities I seem to recall there was a post eaten in the crash about a group trying to help gamer guys get out of the misogyny mindset. Could we get a repost on that? Y'see, one of the things I've noticed is that "morts" tend to get told to fix themselves, by themselves, and they're the people with the least amount of correct tools to do that with. Some will get lucky and stumble on a way out, but many are just left to vainly struggle in their own morass of dysfunction.

  14. Re: A Thread for Random Videos preview for the upcoming "Ladybug" anime, of which I know nothing but what's seen on screen. OTOH, I think you can guess a lot of what it's about just from that.
  15. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? "Tomorrow's Children" from 1934, a ripped from the headlines story about forced sterilization. It's largely in favor of same for eugenics reasons, but for dramatic purposes the system goes wrong when a innocent girl is condemned because of her horrible family. She's saved at the last moment when it turns out she's adopted. It also has a chronic criminal point out that a vasectomy won't prevent him from stealing, it just keeps him from getting stuck for child support.

  19. Re: Create a Villain Theme Team! Umm...could you perhaps expand on how Cannon is a "suitable" non-human for an Old West-themed group? (I was thinking of things like longhorns, buffalo, coyotes, cacti, etc....)
  20. Re: Create a Hero Theme Team! Stand-In is nigh-unkillable (scientists think a nuke might do the trick,) but is otherwise not powered. However, he discovered that he had a knack for disguise and acting, and got the top training he could afford. He's the Human Targets' undercover man, often impersonating people under threat of assassination to draw the would-be killers out.
  21. Re: Create a Villain Theme Team! The Gray Djinnya is, she claims, a servant of Fate; the prophecies of Nostradamus just happen to be interpretations of the Fate she serves. While the Djinnya has vast magical abilities, most of them are limited by requiring a mortal to make three wishes. Once those wishes are made, however, the Djinnya can interpret them fairly freely to help achieve her own/Fate's goals. One of her most notable victims is Cheer Girl (see the Hero Theme Team thread.) Gray Djinnya has to rely on the other members of the group to move her summoning focus (which changes shape to fit the surroundings) to the proper spot to attract wishers; she's hoping to persuade the Sophia to become one of them. New Team: The Badmen, Six members. The Badmen are a tight-knit group of criminals with an Old West flavor, operating primarily in the American Southwest. Despite the name, they do allow women and suitable non-humans (but no more than one of each at a time) but all members must be "bad" people. Their focus is on robbery, rustling, and beating people up, but will kill if it becomes necessary or if they're getting paid.
  22. Re: Why Your Heroes Shouldn't Kill Just re-reading an old Mexican comic I have ("La Bestia"), protagonist is some kind of government investigator (apparently working for the military, but not in uniform) tracking down druglords. He does kill a downed opponent--by running him over with a car...repeatedly This does get him reprimanded by his boss, and threatened with being taken off the case. It also gives him a bad reputation with the public--later he has to assure a bystander that he won't kill an informer just for being a little slow to cough up the dope. Relatively mild consequences, but still, consequences.
  23. Re: Create a Hero Theme Team! Captain Crewcut might seem like an odd choice for the Grassroots Party. He's fiscally conservative, pro-military (they were the ones that gave him his supersoldier powers in the first place) and anti-gun control. But he's firmly in favor of legalizing medical marijuana and generally easing off the War on Drugs, as he feels it has criminalized an entire generation of young men.
  24. Re: World War Two Campaign Just reread the early bits of "Fist of the Blue Sky", which is set in 1935, and is a prequel to "Fist of the North Star". The main character is Yan Wang ("The KIng/God of Death"), a superhuman martial artist whose secret identity is Professor Kenshiro Kasumi, mild-mannered women's college literature teacher, (He even wears glasses!) After an attempt by Pu Yi (puppet emperor of Manchuria) to draft Yan Wang into his bodyguard corps, our hero travels to Shanghai where he almost single-handedly wipes out the evil druglord gang currently in charge of the Shanghai underworld. (The fact that this puts "honorable" gangsters back in charge is treated as a good thing, what with much of the city being under the control of foreign militaries anyhow.) The last couple of chapters in the version I saw seemed to indicate that Yan Wang was going to go on to help Chinese resistance against the Japanese military invasion. So fast forward some years for your campaign, and Yan Wang might be a mysterious ally when our heroes are caught behind enemy lines in China (and his Japanese nationality a shocking reveal) or perhaps when America enters the war, Yan Wang feels compelled to protect his homeland from invasion.
  25. Re: Create a Villain Theme Team! Fawn Tellest is Crooked Arrow, cousin to the famous hero Straight Arrow. She's not the best archer around, but makes up for it with a plethora of gimmicked arrows for any conceivable situation. Her trademark arrow is the infamous "bender arrow" which shoots around corners and avoids walls to attack those behind them. Fawn won't say what drove her to a life of crime, but is noted for giving any loot over basic needs and arrow components to charity. New Team: The Fey Five! (five members) The Fair Folk, lovely though they might be to the eye, do not share humanity's moral codes--or sometimes even understand them. The Fey Five pursue the goals of their mysterious masters, often coming into conflict with Earth's heroes. Each member is either a fairy creature themselves or a human that has been touched by the fairies and become something...other.
