At this point I think D&D/Pathfinder is every bit as mathematically complex as hero, with damage reduction and all the modifiers.  But people can and do learn; its just a matter of being willing to teach, having fun, and approaching it right.  I wish I could get that chance again.

The final character in the Children of the Holocaust is the White Rose.  His origin is very odd; he was among 13 kids hiding in a building that was destroyed, and they all vowed to defeat the Nazis.  When he awoke, Erich had powers and was a gestalt of all 13 minds in one body.  It would be an interesting character to play but his powers and background are just so vague.  Was it magic?  Why is he so fast?  His martial arts were just 20 points of undefined abilities, so I gave him some highly mobile, energetic martial arts moves.

I think that's why I like Golden and Silver Age campaigns. To my mind, the heroes should be rescuing innocent bystanders from the machinations of the villains, not from the "collateral damage" caused by their own heroic efforts. There's a kind of cynicism inherent in that "gritty realism" that I simply have no interest in exploring.

Maybe my take on this is a bit colored - I was living in Cleveland when the Avengers' New York scenes were filming there. Then I'd walk past all the decrepit Cleveland buildings on my way to university classes and think "Man, we're really doing a great job rebuilding from that Skrull Chituari invasion! Lookin' good, everybody!"

Silly as it is, it gave a really strong feeling for what it's like when crap like that goes on in a city. Ordinary people? RUN RUN RUN and then live among the rebuilding scaffolds.

I'm pretty much with Bigdamnhero here - give people a chance to rescue civilians, because these are heroes, man. That's what they do.

Another fun thing from the brawl - my character got knocked into a storefront, which we'd written "Comic Shop" on. Clearing broken glass out of his hair, he suggested the guy behind the counter leave, which was met with "Are you kidding? This is the best day of my life!"

    ...

At which point, you know, we tried to both protect, and put on a show for the dude.

Yeah, sort of.  It was exclusively a weird west game for quite a while but you're right they have been careful about not adding too much complexity.  Of course, that's a drawback too; it can't do some things very well.

If it sounds that way then either I failed to make my point clear, or you are not really making an effort to grasp it.

For all the tv programming that wants a primarily male audience, pandering to men makes sense. For all the tv programming that wants a primarily female audience, pandering to women makes sense. But for any tv show that wants as broad an audience as possible, pandering to either sex too much is foolish as it almost guarantees it will lose a big chunk of that audience.

If Supergirl's goal is to appeal primarily to women, then pandering to them makes sense, and alienating most of the potential male audience is of little consequence to its producers and advertisers. But if its goal is to appeal to everyone, then it would be a serious error in strategic judgment to pander to women, since that risks losing a significant portion of the male demographic they ostensibly want to hang on to.

It isn't a question of fairness or chauvinism, it is simply a question of what kind of show Supergirl wants to be, or rather, what kind of audience it wants to attract (and maintain). My message to the networks is that they will make more money appealing to everyone than they will appealing to just women, so why not do that? Especially when the source material comes with tremendous potential to appeal to everyone right from the start.

OK the first build for the Wings of the Valkyrie module.  This team is made up of various villains and heroes that in some way were affected by the Nazi evil and are called the Children of the Holocaust.  A strange assortment of personalities, they barely function as a team but have a single common goal that keeps them together.

Danube is an ancient water spirit that protects Slavic people from cruelty and oppression.  One of the lesser known evils of the Nazis was that they hated the Eastern European Slavs nearly as much as they did Jews.  An aquatic creature, Danube is very difficult to harm with physical attacks.  Like all 2nd edition characters, Danube took some work to convert to 6th edition.  Since Danube is described as "nearly immortal" in the text, I gave him a gigantic lifespan.  I also had to add in shapeshift, a power that didn't exist in 2nd edition, to match its description.  But Danube was at least say to color.

The very first Hero campaign I ever played in was Fantasy Hero (3ed). In fact, I played almost exclusively heroic-level Hero for more than a decade before I got into my first Champions campaign. I think Hero works really well for fantasy, but it depends on what type of fantasy game you want to play. If your players want to play a standard-issue D&D-style game, then yeah the D&D rules are probably better suited for that. But if you want to create your own original magic system(s), or you have a character concept that doesn't fit neatly into clearly-defined classes, or if you generally you want to play a different style of fantasy, then Hero allows you to do that far better than trying to force D&D into something it wasn't made for.*

The best way to hook D&D gamers into trying Fantasy Hero is to ask them "Have you ever had a character concept you couldn't make work in D&D? Maybe something from a book/movie that didn't seem to fit in a D&D world? Let's try building that."

The "other best" way to hook them in is: "Hey, I have this really cool idea for a fantasy game, where magic works a little differently, but I can't make it work using D&D rules. Are you guys willing to try this other system?"

Also note that Fantasy Hero requires much more up front work on the GM's part, particularly in terms of designing magic systems, world building, etc. In general I find the more work you expect new players to do, the more frustrated they're likely to get. Depends on your players, of course. Some will enjoy creating their own spells, so you can hand them the rule book and let them go nuts. (Subject to GM approval, natch.) Others will have a concept in their heads, but would prefer to let you handle the mechanics of building it. Other just want you to hand them a list of spells they can choose from.

The other things that drew me to FH immediately were the rules mechanics "fixed" several things that had always annoyed me about the D&D system (armor making you harder to hit; whittling away Hit Points by death from a thousand cuts; etc). And lastly - and this is entirely subjective - D&D characters always felt more like a 2-dimensional framework to hang magic items off; whereas Hero characters felt much more 3D, with magic items enhancing character abilities rather than supplanting them. YMMV on the last part. (On all of it, really.)

    * BTW, this was my chief complaint with most of the published settings for Fantasy Hero. Turakian Age in particular felt like it was trying too hard to be "How to run a D&D game using Hero," as opposed to Tuala Morn and Atlantean Age which gave you something different and original that you couldn't do in D&D.

Dr Death was just a prop to distract the PCs while Deathstroke robbed some isotopes, so he had to seem dangerous and powerful to get their attention.  There wasn't an agenda beyond that, although if you're just starting your campaign, it might be a useful tool to help PCs be a bit more careful.
If there's one constant theme through all comics, its that the heroes hold back until they know for sure they won't hurt the target.  How many thousands of times have you read "at least, I can really cut loose" or its variants about robots or a really tough foe?  Genre convention.  If you want to simulate the comics, that's how it works

Doctor Draconis!  While the founders of Deathstroke were Frost and Deathsinger, it was Dr Draconis who was able to build the Dagger device and had the expertise to give them real power.  Again, I had to tweak his build a bit.  The gulf between 2nd and 6th editions is pretty big, but all I did was add a few science skills and define his life support more specifically.  He had "full life support" as the power worked back then, but it didn't make sense for his suit to make him immortal and immune to disease, so its more limited.  And of course he had a transfer which I had to jury rig with Drain/Aid.  Like all early builds, there's no mention what his powers actually are, so I attributed all his attacks to his tail, since its glowy and looks impressive in the image.

The team is pretty capable, but Dr Draconis can easily take on a whole hero team alone.  However, outside his armor, he's just a really smart scientist.  I love how the Mark Williams art really came alive with the coloring.

Incidentally, Hero Designer did something here I've run into a few times, rarely: it reduces a cheap power to 0 points with a limitation, which is as far as I know and the way I've always played it a no-no.  A power does not ever go below 1 point, no matter how many limitations it has on it.

And, finally, Virtuoso, possibly the most powerful character in the group.  His power pool isn't defined very carefully (odd for a Champions character) in terms of special effect, but from the description seems to be a reality manipulation ability.  He's strictly support, staying back and assisting others while trying to stay out of combat.  This guy would be tough to run as a GM because unlike the comics, PCs tend to zero in on support people who hang back and hammer them first.  I added a couple of professional skills (performance art stuff) because he didn't have any; basically he'd suck at his art because it was all academic and theoretical.  The power pool suggestions are ones mentioned in the description and a few I figured he'd likely have and use.  He didn't have any wealth listed, despite being aristocracy, so I figured either he's from one of those English families that went bankrupt, got kicked out of the family, or spent all his money on lavish living and Atlas, so has no ready cash.

These things are relative.  Barry's mother was killed, just about right before his eyes and his father was unjustly convicted for that murder and is still in prison.  Most of his opponents kill several people before Barry even gets on their tail.  Once he gets them, he commits kidnapping and holds them illegally in a private black site without even a toilet.  Except for the murderers he decided to just let run free as long as they didn't reveal Barry's secret identity, which was only a secret to his foster sister, who he is going to marry.  In pursuit of this noble cause he has been working respectively with another murderer (who was in fact the man who killed his mother), the man who built the weapons for the 3 murderers Barry let go, and a woman who is destined to create a few bodies of her own.  He was inspired to take up the cause by his friend from a neighbouring city who has made a career of out of murdering people who should live and not killing anyone who should die.   In pursuit of the cause he lured his father figure into being complicit in his numerous felonies.  Next episode he's going to fail to save his mother via time travel.  Don't whine about spoilers, we've already seen him fail.

That may not be as dark as Arrow, the series about the second-worst superhero in the world, a man who ruins everything he touches, but it's substantially darker than the character from a chick-flick who one day says "Y'know, I haven't been living up to my full potential.  In fact for some reason I'm wearing glasses I don't need just to look less attractive even though I haven't been a superhero yet and thus don't even have a secret identity to protect.  I think I'll save a few hundred lives before going back to my job working for one of the ladies from Sex and the City".

Only one more guy and the agents to go.  I'm not sure what I'll do next, maybe I will do my take on Deathstroke or the guys in Challenges for Champions, a series of adventures I really liked.
