  1. Re: [Review] Tuala Morn Your mileage may vary. Nothing wrong with that!
  2. Re: [Review] Tuala Morn There's not much here that I hate. Things I'd tweak for the sake of the "feel" I'd like to create, sure, but that's just GM prerogative. Things I hate, not so much.
  3. Re: [Review] Tuala Morn I thought he was joking about his use of superlative adjectives. Marvel comic titles, y'know.
  4. Re: Turakian Age Calendar Program Go Maya-plus. Nested counts based on the lunar and solar cycles plus cycles for each of the five visible planets. It'll make their brains bleed.
  5. Re: FH Gripes I never said anything was a "hard limit." I merely repeated what the table suggested was a reasonable limit for certain real-world individuals, as a comparative basis. It might help you to read what is written rather than what you've already decided was meant. Saves me thinking I wasted perfectly good fingertips on you, y'know?
  6. Re: FH Gripes I disagree. The "Characteristics Benchmarks Table" on FRED p. 41 suggests that 20 STR is at the upper limit for an Olympic weightlifter, so (to pull an example out of the air) one would not need to assign Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime a STR greater than 20. The Legendary (21-30) range includes animals like horses and gorillas--so if there is a valid reason why a player character should be able to punch out horses like Mongo in "Blazing Saddles," you can allow that (at 2 CP per point of STR beyond 20, if using NCM). No, the rules as written don't forbid to let PCs buy STR beyond 20. Why should they? Steve Long isn't paying HERO Cops to stand over GMs with a stick. But there are guidelines, and PCs with 40 STR in a Heroic-level campaign don't respect those guidelines. I see an issue here where the system is getting blamed for a GM's failure to predict or prevent abuse of the system. Even for a novice GM, there are enough guidelines in place, established through more than two decades of play, that such failure should not have to happen.
  7. Re: Tuala Morn Discussion From what I can tell, Gaelic is a terrific trash-talking language, but I haven't had much opportunity to learn any. I'm limited to Mandarin Chinese, which as any "Firefly" fan knows, is also surprisingly good for such purposes.
  8. Re: The Cadfael session In the books, too, but the site does seem a reasonable place to ditch a murder victim. You're right about the medieval forensics, too. The series is a virtual guidebook to how to do criminology in a pre-industrial society.
  9. Re: The Cadfael session It really is. I remembered having a difference of opinion with it, but as I look at it now I can't see what that might have been.
  10. Re: Rejected Superhero Names Captain Cadaver! He's completely invulnerable to harm--because he's already dead!
  11. Re: Tuala Morn Discussion A few new Heroic-level Feats for your favorite spearman... Del Chliss Feat: By throwing his spear using a special grip, the character causes it to spin in flight and inflict more terrible and painful wounds. Buy as: RKA ½d6, Increased STUN Multiplier (+1 STUN Multiplier; +¼) (12 Active Points); OAF (-1), Only To Increase Thrown Spear Damage (-1). Total cost: 4 points. Salmon-Leap Feat: This Feat allows a character to leap higher and farther than his peers (for example, to jump high enough to strike over an enemy’s shield). This is a very watered-down version of the Superheroic Salmon-Leap on page 139 of Tuala Morn. Buy as: Leaping +2”. Total cost: 2 points. Shield-Rim Feat: This is the Feat of using a specially constructed, sharpened shield rim as a weapon. Buy as: WF: Shield-Rim (an Uncommon Melee Weapon). Total cost: 1 point. Spear-Smiting Feat: This Feat allows the character to block spears, arrows, and other relatively slow-moving projectiles using his shield, sword, or spear. Buy as: Missile Deflection (arrows/projectiles), Range (adjacent hexes, +½) (15 Active Points); OAF (-1), Requires An Attack Roll (-½), Will Not Work Against Heavy Missiles (-¼). Total cost: 5 points. Warrior’s Scream Feat: The character can emit an ululating battle cry that chills his enemies’ hearts with terror. Buy as: +25 PRE, Incantations (throughout; -½), Only To Make Fear-Based Presence Attacks (-1). Total cost: 10 points. Yoke-Pole Feat: The character can run along the yoke-pole of a moving chariot while maintaining his balance. Unlike the Rope Feat on page 138 of Tuala Morn, the Yoke-Pole Feat does not include the Breakfall Skill, since Breakfall would hardly help a character avoid being run over by his own horses and chariot. It does include Acrobatics, with which the character might roll or throw himself clear of the vehicle. A character who already knows the Yoke-Pole Feat should be allowed to buy the Rope Feat for 3 points, and a character who knows the Rope Feat may buy the Yoke-Pole Feat for 3 points, the cost of the appropriate Skill. Buy as: Acrobatics (total cost: 3 points) plus Environmental Movement: Supreme Balance (total cost: 3 points). Total cost: 6 points.
  12. Re: The Cadfael session The series is pretty good--Derek Jacobi was a great casting choice--but it suffers from the running time permitted each episode. The books allow much more detail, and give you a wonderful sampling of recurring characters around Shrewsbury that could inspire any decent GM to run a campaign in a "static" setting.
  13. Re: Best ever Reason to NOT be a superVillian!! And let's not forget the distressingly high face-to-acid ratio.
  14. Re: Best ever Reason to NOT be a superVillian!! Let's face it...the constant thwarting is hard on the self-esteem.
  15. Re: Rejected Superhero Names The Cowpat! He Shape Shifts into...you know...and collects forensic data on archvillains' footprints.
  16. Re: Rejected Superhero Names The Squealer: "I SAW that! I'm telling the cops!" (High DCV; lots of Running.)
  17. Re: Best ever reason to NOT be a superhero... High doses of radiation aren't everything they're cracked up to be.
  18. Re: Best ever reason to NOT be a superhero... If your DNPCs ever find the costume, the worst that can happen is a spoiled Halloween surprise.
  19. Re: Stalin's Army of Dog-Men! God, I hope Rick Santorum doesn't start posting.
  20. Re: Western Hero Book It's real. My late grandparents used to live in a cabin outside Custer.
  21. Re: Tuala Morn Discussion Another tidbit for the interested: my character sheet for Nuala the Proud (as she would appear in my campaign). Nuala turned out to be a fun noncombat NPC--tough as nails, but honorable enough despite her ambitions. Enjoy.
