  3. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? I think that maybe you are hitting on some excellent points here. Maybe the best way to approach Horror RPGs is to not run them specifically, but introduce elements of horror into your other genres, where it would be least expected. Nobody would expect the horrors from the "depths of Hades" in a Western Hero, Superhero, or Dark Champions campaign...but in a Horror Hero campaign, it's accepted as the norm. The players really won't get scared...because they expect it, and are probably prepared for it. So, maybe there truly isn't "REAL (perceived) Horror" in Horror RPGs...but in your other genres, the "Horror" is the fact that your players will never even think to prepare for it, because they weren't expecting it.

  6. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? Sound more like The Toxic Avenger (see the review at BadMovies.org) than it does a Horror RPG or movie...now doesn't it?
  7. Re: WWYCD:Little Girl Lost Turbo would probably leave the child where she is. What good would come from uprooting the child from her adoptive family, and the only world she has ever known. It's basically the "Tarzan Syndrome", at the first opportunity, the child would attempt to go back to her "Lost World" home. To a place where she feels comfortable...and loved.
  8. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? But again...It's a rare case indeed. Like I said to Super Squirrel, you probably have some "skiddish" players, especially if they had nightmares featuring "in-game events"... ...or possibly they are out of touch with reality?

  12. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? Now, this is HORROR...and is the most FOWL!!!
  13. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? I think you make some excellent points Jhamin, and they are very well received. "Sanity Loss" was a game mechanic that was introduced in the original version of the Call of Cthulhu RPG (from Chaosium)...as a game mechanic to simulate the effects of the "horrors" that your PC (or NPC for that matter) encounters. Interesting idea...but hardly "scary". It seems to me that RPGs just desensitizes role-players from those "basic fears", even the "campfire ghost stories".
  14. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? Especially if your the "pretty & popular girl", that has to check out the noises in the dark...wearing only your underwear!!!
  15. Re: There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? Now Roy_The_Ruthles, Bring the point totals to 200+150 disads...and that might be a "true horror" game... ...and a total "party-kill" to boot!!!

  17. There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? Part of the attraction of "horror", is the adreneline rush one gets from "being scared". Most horror plays on the basic fears and paranoias that we all have as "normal neurotics" in this crazy, mixed-up world. This doesn't translate well in RPGs. Most gamers look at the "horror" as just another big beastie that they MUST somehow destroy. It's just that simple. There's no "real horror" in RPGs. The reason I think is because most RPGs are broken down into "mathematical equations"...and what gamer is afraid of the horror that is The Mathematics Beast from planet Algebra IV! Well no gamer is...really. So, gamers look to overcome the situation with superior mathematical skills, knowledge of "table breaks", etc. One roll of the dice is all it takes...and The Calculus Creature from planet Pythagerus VI is no more, and he has perished due to the "superior math skills" of the Role-Playing Gamer. So, with this said, I'll ask again... There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there?
  18. I am starting work on my High Plains Hero campaign...which is going to be my setting for Western Hero. I am planning on setting the game in Texas (a few years prior to attack on The Alamo). I am also trying to capture the "Gritty Western" feel of such movies as Catlow, A Fistful Of Dollars, etc. What I am looking for is any information for the Hero System, or for that matter historical information (especially website-based) and such to aid me in the work I am trying to do. I have access to the following "gaming materials" right now... Western Hero GURPS: Old West Boot Hill RPG (by TSR) Any additional help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...
  19. Re: Greatest Western Movies of all Time I know what you mean... I found the link a few days ago, after this thread started. I've been thinking about Western Hero quite a bit recently. I want to capture the gritty style of the "Spaghetti Westerns" in my game. I am searching a little more frequently for materials nowadays for my research. I am hoping to make this game a reality.

  21. Re: Greatest Western Movies of all Time Heres a link to the website Images: A Journal of Film and Popular Culture...and their reviews of "30 Great Movie Westerns". Go To Images: 30 Great Westerns
  22. Re: Greatest Western Movies of all Time Probably my all time favorite western is CATLOW, based on the book by Louis L'Amour. The Magnificent Seven, based on Kirisawa's The Seven Samurai, is a close second. I also love all of the Clint Eastwood westerns, especially Two Mules For Sister Sarah. All of the "Spagetti Westerns" are great films...especially A Fistful of Dollars. A guilty pleasure for me is the movie The Quick and the Dead. I can't explain it. It's not a particularly good film...but I can't get enough of it. Any John Wayne western...especially TRUE GRIT and The Sons of Katie Elder, as well as The Shootist. Quigley Down Under is a good piece as well...Tom Selleck was awesome as Quigley
  23. Re: Most Feared Disadvantage Actually... As a player...the fact that your GM is going to give you at least one mystery HUNTED that your character is never going to receive points for!!!
  24. Re: Goofy Disadvantage / Power Ideas And...for those of you too young to know about Carmen Miranda...here's the official website... The Official Carmen Miranda Website Here's the $128,000 Question... Q: Why should this never Susceptibility NEVER be allowed? A: Because the Human Body is comprised of approximately 85%-90% WATER!!! Henceforth...the character dies immediately after character creation.
  25. Re: Most Feared Disadvantage I would have to agree with most of you, UNLUCK is the "most feared" Disadvantage...HANDS DOWN!!! UNLUCK has the biggest opportunity to just screw a character over in the worst way possible...by making him/her a total slave to the fate of die rolls, and not from the fate of any consequence of the player character's actions. It lessens the Role-Playing aspect of the game, buy turning into "ROLL Playing".
