Enforcer84
Ok I'm working on a large team of South American Superheroes - one for every country. I have one question now and I'll be offering up more as I come to them. for Columbia, I've tagged a flying speedster I want to call the Silver Condor. It's a young lady so I want to make sure I have the "gender" of the name right. Google Translate gives me: El Cóndor de Plata as a name though can I call her La Condor De Plata? And is there a better way to say it?
Vondy
I couldn't find it when I searched the boards, but years ago I posted a Brazilian hero based in Rio names: O Chihuahua Oscuro -- The Black Chihuahua He was a Daredevil / Black panther type with with a personality perfectly captured by Antonio Banderas in Puss in Boots. He was expert with Capoeria, Escrima and Whip Fighting. As hokey as the name sounds to us, the Chihuahua is quite the symbol of machismo and masculinity in Latin America. Christopher R Taylor
Its going to depend a lot on where in South America you ask about names, because more than half the continent speaks Portuguese and its not the same as Spanish at all. bigbywolfe
for Columbia, I've tagged a flying speedster I want to call the Silver Condor. "More than 99.2% of Colombians speak the Spanish language"
Pattern Ghost
Not to mention if he's doing one for each country, that half becomes 1/14th.
Pattern Ghost
OK, cóndor is a borrowed word, that's masculine. There's no feminine form of it, as far as I can tell. (If you just toss an "a" on the end, you get a surname.) I'd say it's safe to use the feminine article when discussing a female of the species. Lord Liaden
Nouns in Spanish, and I believe the other Romance languages, are always either "male" or "female" for purposes of pronouns. Whether a particular specimen that the noun refers to is male or female doesn't change the pronoun used.
Cassandra
The Smoking Cobra, hero from Brazil. During World War Two Brazil was the only South American country to send combat troops to Europe. They sent a Division sized unit called the Brazilian Expeditionary Force to Italy which serviced under the U.S. Fifth Army. The FEB (as it was known in it's Native Portuguese) was armed and equipped by the United States. When Hitler heard about the FEB, he said the Brazilians would send troops to Europe "When Snakes smoked pipes." The nickname "Smoking Cobras", and the unit symbol of a snake smoking a piper were in defiance of Hitler's prediction.
