Pittsburgh: City of Champions

The thing is, both can be true because, well, comic books. The train and tracks are out of phase from the normal dimension, this the area is considered "haunted" by a "ghost train".

The villain who created it is Bad Baron Blackard, who is rather hi-tech but styles himself like a turn of the last century Robber Baron. He seeks out various properties, and acquires them by hook or by crook. And he has no qualms about what the properties are used for.

Nice.  The film studio could be a front for some criminal enterprise.

The following is from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Heinz Red Zone will remain at Acrisure Stadium. And one of the big ketchup bottles could be returning as well.

Kraft Heinz and the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached a verbal agreement on a new five-year deal that will maintain the global food giant’s presence at the North Shore stadium even after it lost a naming rights battle to Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Acrisure.

“We’re happy to say we’re going to continue to work with Heinz. Heinz is going to continue to be a corporate partner of ours,” Ryan Huzjak, Steelers vice president of sales and marketing, said Thursday.

Phantom Pittsburg: A creation of Bad Baron Blackard, it is an extradimensinal space touching the real Pittsburgh at various points around the city. With a special "key" one could get to these various places at various places in the city.

Blackard allows other criminals assess to the spaces for various reasons and various prices. The major places are the Phantom Train Tracks (ment mostly to transport various goods across the city, but sometimes as a deathtrap by someone who just refuses to shoot the troublesome meddling kids and their talking dog), an area attached to a bank (best way to rob it, by 'misplacing' valuables between dimensions), various abandoned places (which makes one wonder, why not just use the abandoned place itself).

The prison of Pittsburgh is one place unconnected to this dimension, but Bad Baron Blackard is working on solving that 'problem' soon.

More on Bad Baron Blackard.

Baron Bradley Blackard is the Baron of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. His home dimension is vastly different from the Champions Universe.  In his world, the United States of America doesn't exist. The English won the "American Rebellion", and has strict control over the years over the colonies.

In his universe, the World Wars never happened. Fashion hasn't evolved much past edwardian times. Science has advanced some, but are restricted to the aristocracy.

Baron Blackard hated the system. And he seemed an escape from the strife of class and position. Eventually he invented a way to cross dimensions.

He loves it hear, in spite of the wierd stuff. And he views himself as a kind of hero.

Ms. Might is an older teenaged girl a little over 16 and one of the few heroic Boom Juice recipients in the city. She is a flying brick still learning her powers, roughly at the same ability level as DC’s Wonder Girl/Donna Troy was when she was that age.

Her accidental exposure to Boom Juice transformed her overnight from a mousy, brunette teenager with glasses and a rather plain face into a supremely well-built young woman for her age and also added a couple of inches to her height. Although she no longer needs them, she still wears her glasses and has also taken to wearing baggy clothes in her secret identity as mild-mannered Sally Sanders, high school student.

In real life, since 1983, Schenley Park has been home to a vintage motor sports car race, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, that takes place annually in mid-July.  However, in the Champions Universe, this might be its first year.  Think of the havoc a guy like Ted Knight's character from Caddyshack could create if he's the chairman  of the race committee and he and his friends, none of which race, are the race committee, especially when he wants his grandson to drive the Lamborghini pace car instead of the Sports Car Club of America driver that should.

Two from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

When Point Park University debuted its new Pittsburgh Playhouse Downtown in 2018, it came with the requirement that an outdoor courtyard and second floor terrace would be open to the public.

But with some now treating the spaces as a “Downtown urinal,” the university is seeking to fence the area in and close off access overnight — a proposal that doesn’t sit well with city planners.

Under the proposal, the public would have access to the courtyard and terrace from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. After that, the spaces would be closed off to the public unless someone is attending an event or is a guest of the university.

In making the case for the changes, Shawn Gallagher, Point Park’s attorney, told the commission that the spaces have become “a haven for criminal activity” after hours.

“If you walk by, it’s like a Downtown urinal,” he said. “It’s been very problematic keeping it clean and getting rid of the smell. If you walk by, it’s kind of overwhelming.”

A parking lot collapsed in Penn Hills on Tuesday night, taking over a dozen cars with it.

No injuries were reported.

About 125 yards of pavement along the 11000 block of Frankstown Road sank in the ground around 6:15 p.m.

According to Penn Hills police Chief Ron Como, the lot fell into what used to be an underground parking garage and is now an abandoned warehouse. Emergency workers were searching below ground to make sure no one was in the space, as squatters have been located there before, according to Chief Como.

There is an apartment building next to the site of the collapse, and it has been condemned, according to Post-Gazette news partner KDKA-TV.

Chief Como said he got a call around 6:30 p.m., alerting him that parts of a parking lot had collapsed, taking 14 cars with it.

One woman was in a car in the lot at the time, but she was rescued by responders and sustained no injuries.

The lot is in front of an apartment building that houses about 50 people, the chief said. Code enforcement is in the process of determining the structural integrity of the building and surrounding structures.

The prior post makes me wonder if there might be an Under-Pittsburgh where mutants and monsters lurk, or perhaps an entire community, some good and some bad, all going about their business in abandoned tunnels beneath the city.

Parts of the city are over old coal mines, a few theaters were built below ground level, and some buildings have underground parking.

What are the television channels in Pittsburgh?

At least there is an outlet for ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS, and NBC, along with many independent and religious channels. Probably also digital antenna television networks like Comet, Charge, METV, Court, Grit, among other channels.

In Pittsburgh there are probably a few extra "new" channels not available in the real world. Like a version of my ideal of Super (a superhero focused television channel). There is also PPDTV and PPDCTV (Pittsburgh Public Domain Television and Pittsburgh Public Domain Cartoon Television). Run by a group of media students, both channels focus on public domain television shows and movies (and cartoon shorts), and are funded primarily on donations.

Another "extra" television channel is Shock! Shock! primarily focuses on horror and suspense movies and shows, but also dips their toes into fantasy and science fiction (especially if they also touch horror). Much like Comet TV, Shock! has a bit of repeats of movies throughout the month, but they try to keep things fresh.

They even have their own horror host by the name of The Editor, who is obsessed with the floor of The Cutting Room.

Hmm. Perhaps Underburgh for a name for it?

I doubt it.  They were under the various buildings and not connected to any other.  There are, as far as I know, no entrances to the coal mines in or around the city.  While there are subway and utility tunnels, they don't connect, in real life, to something like the Morlock tunnels in Marvel comics.

This would most appropriately be done via one of the colleges like Pitt or CMU (or even Carlow). The big schools ALWAYS have radio stations for the students to run. It isn't a stretch to go one step farther to TV...or more precicely a streaming service of some sort.

On a side note, because of Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood (and a few other public TV shows), we're probably best staying away from involving public TV in our publication. Of course, the individual game masters can do whatever they want.
