MLB 2023

The A's cannot catch a break.  Playing Seattle, for once their pitching does just fine.  1 run through 8 innings, can't ask for more.  Up 2-1, going into the 9th.

Solo HR ties the ball game.

10th inning.  Walk, so now runners on 1st and 2nd.  Out. Out.  One more to go...and the roof caves in.

3 run homer.

Double.

Walk.

Walk.

2 run single.

7-2 Mariners.  A's are now 6-25, so back below the Mendoza line.  Still giving up a just a bit under 8 runs a game.  Just about at the 20% of the season mark...they're 11 1/2 out of the *wild card* already.

Getting out of that stadium can't come fast enough.

The Colorado Rockies have a better record than the St. Louis Cardinals right now. Yikes.

And the Yankees, at two games over .500, are in last place in the AL East. Heh.

Early season baseball is really odd sometimes.

with the balanced schedule this year (only play your division opponents 13 times each) there is actually a possibility of a division having every team over 500.

One of the annoying things with My Angels - 2 of those wins for the A's are against us, one of which we gave up 11 runs to them and one of our losses gave up 11 runs to KC. We have played the "easy" part of our schedule and are 3 games over 500.

My gosh, baseball players are morons.

Tigers 2, Mets 0.  Top 9, Mets trying to salvage a single game in the series.  Brandon Nimmo gets a sinking line drive to drop in from of the left fielder to get the tying run to the plate.

Then he tries to steal second.

And is thrown out.

Huh, apparently one of those games in St. Louis today...pitching optional games, that is.  11-7 Angels in the bottom of the 6th.

Haven't had a chance to catch the Orioles yet, until today...NBC and Peacock are doing early start time telecasts on Sunday.

So this is the first time I've heard of Yennier Cano, a pitcher for Baltimore.

OH MY...talk about a GREAT!!!!!!! start to your season.

Counting today...12 appearances.

16 innings.

19 strikeouts.

0 walks.

2 hits.

0 runs.

He's from Cuba;  this is only his 2nd year in MLB, and last year he was...underwhelming.  But so far?  Darn near perfect.

Ohmygosh.......ohh this one is UGLY.  There's video that kicks off immediately...and the key moment is right up front.

https://www.mlb.com/news/ryan-yarbrough-leaves-start-after-being-hit-by-line-drive

The video shows he takes it squarely right in the face.  It rebounds SO HARD that the ball returns almost all the way to the catcher so fast that he throws the batter out by 10-15 feet.

That was Sunday;  today, the KC manager had this:

Quote

“He had a follow-up (visit) this morning and the doctor cleared (him) as far as no surgery needed,” Quatraro said. “He will, as he can, start to introduce light activity, and then he has a follow-up appointment in a month and at that point would be hopefully cleared for more strenuous activity. But between now and then he can do what’s tolerated as far as light activity.”

VERY fortunate.  3 non-displaced fractures around the eye;  I suspect there's some vision problems as well, and that he'll be monitored for concussion symptoms.  But it could've been so, so much worse.

Yeah, but if any of those "vision problems" persevere, his career is over. I know, not the most urgent thing on the list, but I bet he would rate it pretty high. You can't have someone standing out there as hard as balls are hit now with impaired vision.

I happened to see a college softball game the other day, and the pitchers were wearing helmets with some kind of face cage. Probably for just such a circumstance.

I'm old enough to remember (vaguely) when NHL players didn't all wear helmets.

Because they couldn't get the Nevada legislature to commit to $500 million, the A's have announced that they're going to build somewhere else in Las Vegas where they only have to come up with $395 million.

It's the Tropicana, if anyone's interested.

The Trop's rather old and dated now, so...that's not terribly surprising, they might get rid of it.  VERY central location with expansive grounds, going back to its early days.  But it's 60+ years old now, and Vegas doesn't treat its elders with respect.

I'd also be a bit worried about the complexities underpinning this.  The buildings are owned by Bally's, and they're not great, now...Bally's only paid $150M.  But the land is owned by a separate group.  This kinda feels like an internal squabble just waiting to happen, with the A's stuck in the middle...again.  But I suppose there's no such thing as a 'simple' billion-dollar deal.

Face masks and college softball...they're optional.  I don't watch much softball, but when I do catch it...yeah, pitchers and hitters often have em, and apparently corner infielders at times too.  Can't recall about college baseball...hm.  The playoff selection show is the 28th, with the regionals the first weekend in June.  That puts the conference championships starting in less than 2 weeks, most likely.  ESPN's tended to show the ACC and SEC tournaments, at least some of the games, and they're during the day.  Probably catch some of em, and may try to watch.  Certainly, I don't recall many players wearing any optional protection....

So the latter part of the Phillies-Rockies game is on MLB Network right now.  The recap mentioned a Rockies pitcher taken out of the game after being hit by a line drive.  This is what happened.  No, it's not pretty.

https://www.mlb.com/video/nick-castellanos-singles-on-a-line-drive-to-first-baseman-c-j-cron-deflec

At least the 2nd serious incident in a week.  To be sure, that's unusual;  these don't happen *that* often.  Getting extra-padded helmets AND face masks...the dorky-looking super-sized, super-padded helmets alone aren't enough, and very, very few MLB pitchers have ever been willing to wear one...is an extremely hard sell.

Just mentioned on ESPN SNB...

Mike Shannon, the LONG!!!!! time radio voice of the Cards...he retired in 2021 after 50 years in the booth...died a couple weeks ago.  A stroke was listed.  I think he's one of the last booth institutions, with such an extraordinary tenure with one team;  it seems to be happening less than in the past, altho that might be due to the greater importance of the TV broadcasters.  The LONG careers were rooted in the radio side, sometimes with simulcasts, or splitting time...some teams flip their radio and TV announcers during the game.  And with many more games on TV, the radio side has had declining value.

Just pointed out as the 2nd Sunday game wraps up...

Red Sox outhit Padres 7-6.....but lose 7-0.

Bottom first for the Padres...walk, error, walk, infield fly rule (1 out), another walk (first run), strikeout...then a 3 run double.  4 runs, 1 hit.

In the AL right now:  division leaders are TB, Texas, Minnesota.  The WC teams are Baltimore, NY, and Houston, in that order...so 3 of the 5 are AL East.  The crazy part?  The next 2 are...Boston and Toronto.  Even the Jays are only 2.5 back of the Astros.  The AL East has 5 of the top 8 records in the league.

The NL...you have the Dodgers, the Braves, and I'll include the D'Backs, surprisingly...they're 7 over.  Then there's a bunch of mediocre teams very near to .500.  But it's 2 teams from each division so far, that'd make the playoffs...altho the Pirates, who are one of them, have faded.  They were 20-9 on May Day...4-13 since.

Mmm...somehow that link got trashed.  CBS Sports links can be odd, they can post to an article stream, and the particular one can get buried.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2023/05/22/hinchliffe-stadium-negro-league-baseball-reopens/70232554007/

But scrolling down...hadn't seen this...

Glen Kuiper, A's broadcaster for the last 17 years, was talking in, probably, pre-game.  He'd visited the Negro Leagues museum...but the word that came out...wasn't quite "negro".  Yeah...that one.  Pretty darn clear-cut.

Suspended by the broadcast company.  Internal revue over the last couple weeks.  Fired today.

Team broadcasters don't get replaced all that often;  it's a rather good gig.  Unless you mess up badly.
