Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

Well, the grades don't get released to them for another few hours. All this means at this point is that there's no one who simultaneously got a bad grade and has hacked the registrar's system for read access only.

I've drowsed through seminars and colloquia (that is, talks that weren't a class) but not classes. But I'm a person who tends to have difficulty falling asleep unless I'm exhausted, more so when I was younger.

Never fallen asleep during class. During boring ones in large (200+ person) settings I had no problems bringing something to read.

I tend to doodle, write, or do back-of-the-envelope calculations when my attention wanders. I always take a writing pad and pen to talks. It's good form to take notes, and as long as the speaker can't tell you're doodling rather than taking notes, then everyone's happy.

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

On the subject of reading in class my father once pulled a stunt on one of his teachers. The class were in rows in desks and the teacher would wander up and down them silently every now and again in the lesson.

My father had the book they were studying on his desk and another copy of the same book in his lap and he was reading this copy following the lesson. The teacher noticed that he was reading something in his lap and came down to grab the book. Which to his surprise he found was the text book they were following. He asked my father a direct question about the subject following on from what they had been reading and was he was able to answer him directly.

Some classes later my father was reading a book in his lap that was not part of the course with the text book on the desk and the teacher (another one) noticed. He called out tp my dad and said he was not going to be caught in the same way as his colleague.

This "reading the wrong book in class" stuff is something I never saw any instructor call anybody about, and something I'd never call anyone on. All too often the "reading" of extraneous books that I see in class is someone checking in an English-to-X translation dictionary. Yes, the fraction of foreign students can get pretty high.

 Girl Genius's webcomic site is giving the error message "too much bandwidth used".

I didn't know you read Girl Genius.

You're probably better off waiting until tomorrow's update. Yesterday's was all cliffhangery, and made me antsy and anxious to know what happens next.

Yeah, I've got all the GG paper issues and collection volumes, and I read it on-line now. I got my daughter a "Girl Genius" t-shirt (that's all it says, with some gears). I missed it yesterday.
