Re: The cranky thread

How does one manage to cough' date=' sneeze and hiccup at the same time ? That doesn't sound easy.[/quote']

I've done it, and I'm still alive. I had a cracked rib at the time and the sharp, literally breathtaking pain gave me the superhuman ability to instantly stifle an incipent sneeze or cough, and apparently surpressed my hiccup reflex until my rib wasn't so very sensitive to sudden muscular contractions.

Re: The cranky thread

Soooo....Some people make it very hard to be compassionate.

My girlfriend (squee) works for a non profit family homeless shelter; she used to be a big deal project manager in New York but after her divorce she threw that away to work on something that helped her soul...she worked in an orphanage in New Deli for 3 months immediately following her split.

So now she's on the left coast working in the Portland area and she's the night person. The only one. She works from 2-10 and most of the time things are good, or at worst annoying. Yesterday some woman verbally abused her because they had arrived late and had to eat their free meal outside (kitchen was closed for the night) and when the angry homeless mother (the non-profit only accepts those with children) came back with her husband...he punched Sabrina in the stomach when her back was turned.

So, she calls the cops and files a report and family gets the heave ho. I'm so pissed off I can't see straight because she works alone with no security. She's getting some mace (apparently it was verboten to carry it in New York so she never had any). Luckily someone is leaving soon and she will probably move to the day shift in September.

Gonna be a long 4 months.

Venting done.

Re: The cranky thread

Yeah, there needs to be some security there especially if she's working the late shift. Pepper spray isn't going to cut it. Around here it's common practice to get off-duty/overtime cops to do security for temporary gigs; you or your gf might want to look into that. It costs money but it might be a good stopgap until the nonprofit can make better arrangements.

I'd make a comment about the kind of man who would sucker punch a woman when she isn't looking... but then I just did, didn't I?

yeah. The couple had some Domestic violence reports in the past (each of them) but they hadn't had one in 5 years so they were allowed. The place screens people pretty well before they are allowed to stay...but yeah I'm not thrilled with the security for her.

It certainly can happen... if you have an oxy-acetylene torch handy. Otherwise' date=' no.[/quote']

well, a friend had his windshield shatter when his parents did him a favor and washed his car. On the hottest day of the year to date. Black car, hot day, cold water hit glass, Co-efficient of expansion/contraction kicked in...

Literal. I guess it's probably always technically edible' date=' but my first experience with alligator was fried--badly--and extremely oily. Since then I've had it grilled and fried better, both of which were quite good.[/quote']

I had some Saltwater croc in Australia... fishy and not too good.

Water buffalo and camel also were worthless too. (pretty darned sure they were NOT prime cuts)

Kangaroo, however, was wonderful!!!

There is an Aussie joint in Huntsville, Alabama (of all places) that serves excellent Kangaroo. Of course, Huntsville used to host Congress, then NATO, then the Soviets, so Governor's Drive has about 50 restaurants that would qualify as 5-star.

Ostrich was pretty good. A bit like beef, oddly enough.
