Bazza
Re: The Last Word Yep. My only complaint is that it was mostly about the mathematician' date=' not the numbers. AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Hey' date=' we are talking about the Holy Bible here.[/quote'] Exactly. And I love referencing the homosexuality passages that don't condemn it. People's faces turn such interesting colors . . .

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word The ones that talk about King David. He apparently had a very close friend, but others around him discouraged the relationship. Been a while since I read it; I'll see if I can't find it in the next couple of days. If I think of it. Cancer
Re: The Last Word Mathematics lacks a sympathetic figure in the media. When I was part of a math department, I commented on that, and their need to fix that problem. The best they've had lately is the guy in A Beautiful Mind, which wasn't a particularly attractive figure. By contrast (I pointed out), in Contact an astronomer got portrayed by Jodie Foster. Hard to do better than that.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Y'know, when I think of math teachers, I think of the really hot math teacher I had in seventh and eighth grade. She was compared to a Barbie doll at several points in time, actually, though she was more realistically proportioned. Miss . . . Lipski, I think? Cancer
Re: The Last Word The poor woman I had for 7th grade math was in over her head. This was not her fault. Bremerhaven American High School was the smallest USDoD school in Europe at the time, with only 15 faculty for grades 7 through 12. (The school's graduating class of 1969 called itself the "Dirty Dozen"; the class of 1970 was the "Roaring Twenty".) She was a PE teacher by training, but with a dinky school people end up having to be ... flexible. So she drew the assignment of 7th grade math. (Another person, a by-training math teacher, taught the other five math classes.) But a mathematician she was not. Question in the text: What's the minimum number of points two intersecting simple closed curves can share? Like nearly everyone in class, she thought the answer was two. And then I asserted the answer had to be one, gave them the prescription for doing it. Yeah, I intimidated her.

Cancer
Re: The Last Word US Department of Defense. There are American schools associated with US military bases overseas. I went to a couple while growing up. EDIT: Both are closed now, of course.
