Cancer Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Re: More space news! Closest supernova in 25 years SN 2011fe; V = 13.1 late on Aug 26. Haven't found anything more recent than that yet. Quote
Cancer Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 Re: More space news! ... Aw' date=' sugarbeans! Looks like the James Webb space telescope might feel the axe! I first heard about this in May, IIRC. They are badly over budget, though I don't know much more than that. Quote

Narf the Mouse Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 Re: More space news! http://universesandbox.com/ - Simulates astrophysics in an easy and intuitive GUI. Pretty neat. Also, if our galaxy wasn't going to hit Andromeda, if the simulation I ran was correct, the arms will lengthen and get absorbed into a disc. Quote
tkdguy Posted September 1, 2011 Author Report Posted September 1, 2011 Re: More space news! 11.8 last night; it'll probably get up to about 10. Where should I look, and how powerful a telescope do I need? Quote
Old Man Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 Re: More space news! What tkd said. I haven't got time to hunt all over teh intertoobz for a diagram of where the thing is in relation to surrounding stars. Quote
Cancer Posted September 2, 2011 Report Posted September 2, 2011 Re: More space news! If you have a 'scope that lets you see M101, then there's lots of images you can use just by google. There's this one, too. Smaller telescopes will be harder, but probably the Variable Star Plotter from AAVSO (here) may help ... you need to type in "SN 2011fe" in the name box at the top (and if you forget the space it can't find it in its database). Play around with the options. You will have to know your telescope to get a chart that's useful for you: how big the field is, whether it inverts (most do), whether you're using a CCD or just eyeball, etc. Quote
Old Man Posted September 4, 2011 Report Posted September 4, 2011 Re: More space news! I'll just hop over to the Subaru telescope and use that. Quote
