Mutant for Hire
Re: Modern Gods The thing is to think of all of the elements people have in their lives today and areas where they want good luck or fear bad luck and you have areas ready made for deities to arise: Note some of these definitely overlap, but I'm assuming heirarchies of deities with demigods or at least subservient lesser gods following them: God of Wealth/Business/Trade God of Information God of Politics God of Jurisprudence God of Entertainment God of Sports God of Video Games God of Media God of Fame/Popularity/Fashion God of Transportation God of Roads God of Communication God of the Internet God of Technology God of Electronics God of Computers God of Mechanical Devices Muse of Visual Entertainment Muse of Musical Entertainment Muse of Game Design Muse of Written Entertainment Muse of Fashion
hooligan x
Re: Modern Gods I just finished re-reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods which deals with this exact concept. It was a conflict between the gods of old and the new gods. You really need to read this book. Man, it's killer! Go buy it now, I'll wait. OK? Good book, huh? So did you like how Gaiman had Media and Technology as gods? And how urban legends like the Men in Black and the secret Black Helicopters were real because people believe in them? Yeah. Me too. fredrik_nilsson
Re: Modern Gods These two books might inspire you: The Urban Primitive: Paganism in the Concrete Jungle City Magick They're about pagan magic in an urban environment, but they touches upon the subject of new spirits (which are a kind of gods, aren't they). Cancer
Re: Modern Gods ... In any case, I was hoping to get some help fleshing out the idea. What would be the "modern gods"? From my friend, I've already got Internet, Television, Cancer, and Automobile. What other new gods would there be? Wow. Apotheosis at last. Worship Me, mortals! More on-thread ... Credit (though that may be just one Aspect of Money), and Bimbo.

Kirby
Re: Modern Gods God of Oil Worshippers everone who dosent drive a camel to work That's because the camel riders think they are it! I personally wouldn't go this route, because then boogeymen, baseless conspiracies, secret alien overlords, BOGO and other concepts would come into existance 'just because.' If suddenly "I think therefore it exists" then everyone's a Narcissus of one form or another and no idea -regardless of how ridiculous- becomes feasible. YMMV. Big Willy
Re: Modern Gods Mammon, god of riches: king of the gods Laura Nauda, goddess of the state: queen of the gods These two have a fractious relationship, much like Zeus and Hera of old. Mammon basically expects Laura to dance attendance, clear obstacles from his path, and generally give him an easy life. She mostly goes along for the ride, but isn't above using his wealth for her own pet projects, and taking him to task for his philandering if he complains too much.
