Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

I'm neither obsessive enough nor industrious enough to have actually done it. I have thought about it, and it's this sort of thing that makes me glad the latest incarnation of Hero supports random effects (No Conscious Control at the -1 level...can activate it, can't control how it manifests).

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

I seem to recall that D&D created it long before D20.

Two points ...

1. D&D uses the d20 System, so effectively it's the same thing by a different name. The Wand of Wonder existed *way* back in the 1st Edition days (possibly 0th Edition days ...)

2. It's 'Rod of Wonder' nowadays ... which means you can't even just tolerate the silly thing until it runs out of charges, because it won't.

Anyway, on a related note, I had items called 'Chaos Petals' in my old 4th Ed Fantasy hero game ... built it as a Multipower with 16 slots, Random Slot Determination (-1/2), determined by rolling 3d6. Can't remember what the powers were, though ... it's been a while.

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

If you have the 2nd AD&D book of expanded magic (must find it again)... I'd reccomend using the Wild Magic warp table for simulating the effect of a Wand of Wonder--it's very appropriate regarding what it's intended to do.

If I can, I'll do a scan of it.

SFX was a multi-colored beam of light, with the color hitting dependent on the slot.

Build the Wand/Rod of Wonder similarly.

The Tomb of Magic. It could work, but the Wild Surges were writen under the assumed context that there is a particular spell being cast. A lot of the entries state things like, "spell affets target normally except that its duration is doubled" (that's not a literal example; I'm just illustrating the context used for the table).

If I can, I'll do a scan of it.

I hope you don't mean literally. Let's not risk infringing on copyrights here....

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

Its very easy to do. You just make a VPP with 0 Phase Change & No Skill Roll Required in an Independent Focus with the Limitation "Only Random Effects From Finite List" at a -1 1/2 which is a combination of the -1 version of NCC and -1/2 for a limited list.

Then make said finite list of effects and assign a percentile chance to each effect. Whenever the Rod is used, the GM or player, doesnt matter which, rolls percentile dice against the random chart and that is the effect that is manifest.

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

Yes.

Sorta - a player of mine statted out the wild magic table from 2nd ed. AD&D, which was almost identical to the wand of wonder table, I believe. Not quite all the powers are the same, since I told him that 1/3 of them had to be 'weak', 1/3 'medium', and 1/3 'strong' (<30, 30-60, >60, I think). He also invented a few of his own to replace ones that were innappropriate for our game. With a little tinkering, it should serve you well.

I shot off an e-mail to that player, if he doesn't have a soft copy of it I have a hard copy in a binder somewhere, and fast typing fingers.

That table really made wild magic wild, with some permanant effects on the world. In one city there is a once-major, now-abandoned street that is haunted by an illusionary demon lord and a 1/2 size replica of the party running a bar for the midget replicas of the theives guild. Wild fun.

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

My old 2e Tome of Magic is in a Box somewhere, but the wild magic chart is not quite the same as the Wand of Wonder. The WoW predates the concept of Wild Magic (precursors it actually). There are also several different versions of the WoW from different editions and supplements.

As I recall the best one was from an issue of Dragon Magazine called "WOW your players" in issue 147, by Richard Hunt.

Shrike and Frenchy has my interpetation pretty much right on the nose--I haven't bothered to do the work (too much frappe goin' on,) but it would've been a great exercise in wierdness.

I'm looking forward to seeing the table.

ok, the reflection worked. I guess I am going to end up being the obsessive one here.

I'll post when finished. :D

Re: Has anyone built a HERO version of a Wand Of Wonder?

It has been known by many names: The Wand of Wonder, The Deck of Many Things, The Robe of Many Items... In the end, any child can use it, but no one has successfully master it.

The ____________ of Many Wonderous and Tricky Things.

(Based on a 60 point Multipower)

Summon a 150 point Creature, Any Creature +1

Summon a 150 point Boat, +1 Slavishly Loyal

Summon a 150 point Castle, +1 Slavishly Loyal.

(In a silly campaign, it falls from the sky and lands in the nearest empty space, unharmed)

(In a serious campaign, caster is given a map to a nearby castle with the corresponding deed)

Change Environment, 8" Radius, Random Effect (Grow Grass, Heavy Rain, Heat Wave)

15 points of Growth, 0 END, Persistant, Usable on Others, Continous (Lasts for 5 minutes?)

Caster is granted a Wish (Extra-Dimensional Movement)

(In a serious campaign, it summons a demon, IF you defeat the demon, it surrenders and

grants the party one wish)

Caster creates a Pit (Tunnelling)

6d6 Flash, 4" Radius (Shimmering Colors)

Darkness 4" Radius (10,000 Butterflies)

Drain 1 SPD for 1 Turn
