A little bit of technology to work into your science-fiction.

First room launched for space hotel

July 17, 2006 8:03 AM PDT

There's a new object orbiting Earth that could be the first step in the construction of an inhabitable complex in space. Genesis I, built by Bigelow Aerospace of Las Vegas, was successfully launched into orbit by a converted Russian ICBM on Wednesday. This inflatable 14-foot demonstration craft (artist's drawing left) is the first launch toward the company's overall mission--to build an affordable human space complex that is accessible to the commercial sector by 2015.

Re: Space Hotel

The inflatable thing just got me thinking of those rented blow up houses that people rent for their kid's birthday.

"I'm sorry sir, but the contract clearly specified 24 hours. Time to pull the plug."

"But, it's hard vacuum out there!"

"Well, time to renegotiate...."

Re: Space Hotel

Microgravity would make those bouncy things so much more interesting.

Sounds like a Mightybec quote :D

In all seriousness, I think the first people to do space tourism are going to make a fortune... of course, you have to have a fortune to start off with to get it going... :)

Re: Space Hotel

Affordable to whom would be my question. (I always knew that, if an asteroid hit, Donald Trump would survive and I wouldn't.)

Enough cynicism. It is cool to see somebody taking the notion of space habitats seriously, even if it is just to line their pockets.

It starts with the rich, and comes down to the rest of us. Like automobiles, computers, transatlantic flight, and gobs of other stuff.

So this is a start. It probably won't be affordable to me in my lifetime (short of some serious life-expanding technology, which is quite possible), but it'll be there.

"Silence' date=' you tin-plated ninny !"[/size']

Shouldn't that be "bubble-headed booby"?

That inflatable thing was made by a man named Bob Bigelow, who bears a more than passing resemblance to D. D. Harriman from Heinlein's THE MAN WHO SOLD THE MOON.

NASA originally developed the inflatable station concept in the 1960's under the name "Transhab"

However they dropped it.

Bigelow, who is a motel entrepreneur but also a space fantatic, found the Transhab study, and has been pouring his money and energy into the concept ever since. His results are most impressive.

Sly like a fox, he has also put up a $50 million dollar reward for the first team to build an orbital vehicle capable of carrying up to seven astronauts to an orbital outpost by the end of the decade. Of course such a craft would be perfect to ferry paying customers to one of his inflatable motels.
