Background/History: From: Wikipedia Captain Marvel Entry

Captain Marvel's origin story finds the homeless and orphaned Billy Batson making a meager living selling newspapers near an old subway station, sleeping in the doorway of the station. Billy had been living with his uncle after the deaths of his parents, but the cruel old man threw the boy out into the streets and stole his inheritance. While selling papers one rainy night, a dark-clothed stranger comes to the boy, and asks him to follow him down into the subway station. There, a strange subway train with no visible driver appears, which carries the pair to the secret lair of the wizard Shazam. There, the ancient wizard reveals that he has selected Billy to be his champion to fight for good as the "strongest and mightiest man in the world--Captain Marvel!"

To that end, Shazam orders the boy to speak his name, which was actually an acronym for the six various legendary figures who had agreed to grant aspects of themselves to a willing subject: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.

Billy complies and is immediately struck by a magic lightning bolt which turns him into Captain Marvel, an adult superhero. He then learns that he only has to speak the word again to be instantly changed back into Billy. With that, Shazam is immediately killed by a large granite block that falls from above his throne, and Billy vows to fulfill his bestowed role. Whenever he needed advice, Billy could light a brazier near Shazam's throne, which would summon the wizard's ghost.

Marvel's first call to duty was saving the world from the evil mad scientist Dr. Thaddeus Bodog Sivana, who threatened to silence radio forever unless he was paid a large sum of money. Resuming his regular form, Billy tells WHIZ radio mogul Sterling Morris that he can stop the Radio Silencer and Sivana; a disbelieving Morris offers Billy a job on the air if he can do so.

Finding the crooks' hideout, Billy transforms into Captain Marvel and destroys Sivana's radio silencing machine and apprehends his henchmen. Sivana escapes, however, setting the stage for a long line of future confrontations. Marvel transforms back into Billy, who presents the captured criminals and destroyed Radio Silencer to Sterling Morris. True to his word, Sterling Morris makes Billy an on-air news reporter for WHIZ radio.

Personality/Motivation: Also from the Wiki:

Captain Marvel is usually depicted as pure-hearted and unwaveringly upstanding. At one point, he was described by Grant Morrison as the "Sir Percival of superheroes", or a representation of what kids think their dad should be — a "big, nice, noble guy without much sexuality about him". Like the classic depiction of Aquaman or Superman, Marvel is usually an amiable, friendly person. Since he is still a youth, it is harder for him to become corrupted (thus the wizard's reasoning for not choosing another adult like Black Adam as his champion). In the 1995 Underworld Unleashed miniseries, Captain Marvel's soul is coveted by the demon prince Neron, but Marvel's soul is so pure that Neron is unable to possess it.

However, despite his wisdom, Captain Marvel is also depicted as somewhat immature. Since Billy is only a teenager, he tends to take many things for granted and is usually nervous about interacting with other superheroes, making him seem like a case of arrested development to other heroes who are unaware of his true form.

My version plays as a little more worldly version of this. Billy is a teenager now, and he's had a girlfriend, Stargirl. I decided not to use the touching, well written storyline in which Billy leaves the JSA and Stargirl as he can't reveal that Captain Marvel is only a boy and not a late 20s, early 30's guy macking on a teen, because, well, it's weight relies on the fact that no one knows Billy is Captain Marvel and, unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen an extended appearance of Captain Marvel where much of the superheroic community doesn't know. I could be wrong but they're my write ups! So at this point they are cautiously courting each other and Billy and others are a bit uncomfortable because of how it appears to outsiders. Whether that leads to the break up or not, I've yet to decide.

Quote: "Shazam!"

"Holy Moley!"

"Y-you-you Bully!" (led to a nice fight between Captain Marvel and Lobo)

Powers/Tactics: Cap's brick tricks are more limited than Superman's and he lacks the supersenses. However, he also lacks the weaknesses to Kryptonite and magic.

In my DCU they are physically very similar, Cap's got actually a slightly higher BODY score, but that's it. I fight between them should be long and exhausting.

Appearance: The Big Red Cheese!

Cap has been drawn to look like various actors over the years (I did not know that).

He's got a familar red costume with gold sash, the costume has done the skintight/bulky suit with the lappel. A good version is (of course) Alex Ross' costume from Kingdom Come. It's not skin tight but shows his build. He's a rock.

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

When you finish, I may whip up a version of Marvelman. ;)

"A recluse astro-scientist discovers the key word to the universe, one that can only be given to a boy who is completely honest, studious and of such integrity that he would only use it for the powers of good.

He finds such a boy in Micky Moran, a newspaper copy boy, and treats him in a special machine which enables him to use the secret. Just before he dies, he tells Micky the key word, which is 'Kimota!'. Micky stays as he was, but when he says the word he becomes Marvelman, a man of such strength and powers that he is indestructible".

I might even do the Australian Captain Atom too, since he is basically a Captain Marvel ripoff (with a touch of Captain Triumph). Unfortunately he suffers from a singularly unfortunate name in his secret identity...

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

As much as I LOVE Captain Marvel, I'm really not all that well versed on the characters rather long published history...

That said, "The Magic Lightning of Zeus" should not be OIHID. It should be Incantations though. Billy has used it to attack people by saying SHAZAM! and initiating the transformation.

I'm also really not sure if that Accidental Change is worth 20 pts considering his highest priced power is 130 AP and he has 20 pts of Power Defense. Might want to reword that...

Ooh Good point! I'll adjust that tonight...

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

Personal thing (Makes it Much more complex for limited gain): I would buy down all of his powers 7-10 base points and put the following limitations

(5 points worth) Only when only Marvel* Active (-1/2)

(2-5) Only when 1 of 2 Marvels* Active (-1/4)

*Does not include "Black" Marvel's (Black Adam or Osirus)

Over all it will only save probably 20-25 points, but I just loved that twist they did...

Now that I have the Big Red Cheese. it should be pretty easy for me to whip out, Black Adam, Mary Marvel, and Captain Marvel Jr...shouldn't it?

Recent Marvel Family info

BTW, I'm intrigued, but a little put off, by the "Trial of Captain Marvel" infor I've been getting...Billy becoming the next "Wizard?" he's not even had his 21st birthday yet!

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

yeah the trials of shazam have been pretty good arts great too i wasn't all that happy about what they did to Mary Marvel, but these things do tend to happen to female characters. meanwhile what's going on with Black Adam in 52 is pretty interesting.

oh and yet another quality write up from the enforcer

Good Stuff!

I don't know that even I could handle having to repeatadly count up THAT many dice but it's another good write-up.

:D

One tiny nit-pick...

Shouldn't the 'Magic Lightning' power be built without OIHID since the lightning is summoned no matter which form he's in when he says his 'word'?!

126 3) The Magic Lightning of Zeus: Killing Attack - Ranged 7d6, Personal Immunity (+1/4), Indirect (From the Sky, strikes near Captain Marvel; +1/4) (157 Active Points); Only In Heroic Identity (-1/4) 16

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

let me see if i can figure out how to do a spoiler tags nope no idea just white text then

she was fighting a harpy 3 miles up when the power of shazam was taken away and is now in critical condition in a coma.

It'snot as bad as what has happened to many female characters in the past and even in teh pages of 52 but bad enough. on the other hand it has been a good series so far and hopefully it will be remedied

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

Well at least I can see one nice way out, when Freddy is done with the "trials" he returns part of the power to her and somehow force the transformation, she is then "stuck" in Power form, but otherwise functional...

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

out of idle curiosity can anyone tell me if Black Adam is stronger than Captain Marvel?

I am pretty sure they are either the same strength or Cap is just slightly stronger. At least that's how they've shown it in most comics and the recent animated short: Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam.

Re: CHAR: Captain Marvel (Shazam)

He has a rarely used ability to actually dress however he wants when he powers up. Mary used it to change her costume to white, he has used it to pretend to be his father (Street clothes as Cap). It has been implied that he could also change his appearance (Conversation with Freddy why he still looked like a teenager). I think they have dropped it, but I still love the idea that when the three of them are powered up they are weaker because of it

ironically, I hate that. :) (not the shape shifting, the power-share)

Edit: (out of the shower now, TMI, I know)

That's a power complication that always gets ignored when it's convenient, they ignored it in Kingdom Come (or....alternately, they killed Mary, Freddie, and their son off panel before the big Superman/Captain Marvel fight). It doesn't seem to affect Black Adam in any way...by the way did he lose power when Osiris was using his?
