Find Weakness/Phase 12? What we did.

So, my PC was fighting this guy and did a Find Weakness on him twice, dropping his defenses to 1/4. The guy went out, and another fight started right up with two guards. The fight ended with the two guards just as the first guy woke back up and attacked again.

For clarity's sake, the GM had each round of combat begin on 12 (so there was a 12 with the first guy; a new 12 with the two guards; and a third new 12 when the first guy woke up again).

The question became: Does my PC still get the Find Weakness on that first guy? Technically, we exited combat. But the PC didn't go anywhere, and it was only a matter of seconds (phases) between fights.

What we agreed upon was I would keep the FW but not take any post-12 recoveries, since the idea was the fights happend one after the other. This won't necessarily become a house rule, it's just how we solved it on the fly...GM discretion and all that.

What Would You Do?

Sounds like a GM call. If the events were all tightly compacted like that, I'd call it one essentially continuous encounter, and keep the FW. If you KO'd him, ran around the base for five minutes, hacked their computers, and ran into him again on the way out, would probably have to start over.

I would say that not only would he get the benefit of Find Weakness after the guy wakes up 30 seconds after you knocked him out, but that he would get it after running around the base for five, ten, even 30 minutes. Until you have had time to relax or else be majorly distracted by other things, you'll still know that the guy leaves himself wide open when he punches with his right, and you'll still have the timing down to catch him in the throat.

Guess I'm the only one on the other side. First if you knocked the first guy out in say, phase 6, and then the other two showed up, as the GM, I'd have called that phase 7, not 12. My opinion is, since the GM called it phase 12, your last fight was over, and a new one has begun. You've lost your FW. Doing the same thing when the original guy woke up (where again, I wouldn't have started with phase 12) means it's a totally new encounter.

That is how our group runs situations like this. In which case it would all be one big fight and the FW situation would have been a moot point.
