Middle-earth

I'm planning on running a Middle-earth campaign (eventually). I was wondering if anybody knows of any Hero specific resources for Middle-earth out there. I've searched the forums and could only find susano's character adaptions (which are excellent by the way). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Middle-earth

Thanks for the help. I'm planning on running it circa TA 1640, basically using the old ICE MERP time frame, but with magic being more in line with Tolkein's books. You can get almost every old MERP book on PDF from Merp.com. So I have those sources covered. I'll definitly have to look into Decipher's LOTR books. I was just hoping somebody else had done a Middle-earth to HERO campaign and posted it somewhere.

P.S. Yea I know I'm lazy!

I wouldn't know how to give any even if I had any to give! But I still think your great Questionman' date=' I don't care what Savinien says about you:D[/quote']. . . To give Rep: look to the right above the rep-worthy post -- there you'll see an icon of a set of scales. Click there and follow the instructions. :)

I was referring to the color of the rep he'd get from you (grey for none, green for positive number, and red for negative, though we don't have access to negative rep anymore), not the palor of his skin.

be dum ching!

Re: Middle-earth

If my character were a Ranger leader, a la Aragorn,

and had the ability to call on, say 20 rangers to help out

on a mission, which is the best way to write that in F.H. ?

Followers ? " agents" ?

Mind you these rangers arent going to have character sheets,

think of them as more of a military unit... they would probably never appear

on the role-play table, but would be primarily used in a grand strategic sense,

"map-level", either as a threat, or off-table in a "wargame" environment.

Re: Middle-earth

. . . If these Rangers were to this character's beck and call, then they're bought as Followers. If they might be unavailable for some reason or another, I'd say they're Followers with an Activation Roll. :)

As per Fantasy Hero's mass combat system, military units do have character sheets, too.

Re: Middle-earth

I have another question for anybody out there in Herodom. How would you simulate the river flood destroying the Ring-wraiths in Fellowship of the Ring in Hero terms?

Well, it didn't. It killed their horses, which were ordinary flesh and blood (if a bit psychotic) and shredded their clothes and gear. They all turn up again later, good as a box of fluffy kittens, and obviously spent their experience on mounts that wouldn't get washed away this time.

Basically I read it as being that they can't be physically killed - being animate plot devices - erm... partially not-of-this-world. But since normal horses wouldn't carry them and black robes and magic swords being hard to come by in the wilderness, they straggled back to Mordor to say "Sorry boss, we lost him at the last minute - he made it to Elrond's place."

That means - depending on how you see them - they're transdimensional or desolid (like ghosts) but can become physical, or just really, really, tough. Personally I'd build 'em as automatons, since nothing apart from the invisibility suggests they were desolid/intangible: just scary-dangerous.

cheers, Mark

Aside from buying them as actual 'people' like followers or contacts, you could buy the in-game effect of having access to them - "I know a bunch of rangers" is just the SFX.

Things like: bonuses to Area Knowledge (rangers scout around and fill you in on local conditions), bonuses to Tracking (rangers help track the guys you're after and leave you trail signs), Clairsentience w/extra time (rangers scout out an area/target and report back to you), etc.
