The Main Man
Sometimes a GM just cannot come up with a good enough crime for a supervillain to commit. So howsabout we have a thread where we post crimes from real life, fiction, or our own imaginations to serve as a resource of ideas for our superhero games? Even better is if the poster can provide ideas or reasons about why or how it could be inspirational. To kick things off, here's the unintended inspiration for this thread: http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/1307_batman.shtml How is this useful? It's a couple of teenagers dressed as superheroes beating people up. A mentalist villain could command random people to do it, or else it provides a loose real world example of superhero's reputations being tarnished. Adventus
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential San Franciso SysAdmin holds CIty Net Hostage Now doesn't that just drip SuperVilliany? Now put this guy in charge of Stronghold Computer network instead of a City Net! He gives you a password you try it random supervillian(s) let loose. Let the Hilarity ensue! Also, he is wearing a Psi Scrambler so telepaths can't read his mind! Taken from the Armory of course.
Chris-M
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential No link, but a few years ago there were all sorts of stories about various weapons (small arms to WMDs) disappearing from the former Soviet Union. My understanding was that in most cases this was believed to be the result of current and former military officers selling off these assets for their own profit, but you could easily imagine one or more supervillains being behind at least some of this, or committing crimes to get the cash to buy the goods themselves or through their intermediaries. gmurie
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential Well if you want to get really creepy... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Jacobson Plot ideas abound. Holocaust creating a generation of perfect mutants based on his DNA. Genocide doing genetics tests on fathers, and if they've got a mutant recessive taking them out of the pool. A modern take on fairytale changlings by whatsherface from News of the World.

It's called CENTAUR. It is made up of former KGB and other Warsaw Pact assets and is attempting to bring back the old cold war set up in Europe. In 1991, a coup in Russia took place with Gorbachev being held by the KGB in his dacha. There was a report that the "Kemodanchik", the briefcase that carried the missile codes of the Soviet nuclear arsenal, was missing for a few hours. Suppose CENTAUR (or your campaign's equivalent group) copied all of them and gave the case back without attracting suspicion? Or better yet, created a duplicate with the same safegaurds and encryption software?
Drhoz
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential The recent pet-food contamination incident. Easy enough for a villain to use a mutagen as the contaminant. Little girl : *sniffles* Hello Mister. Are you here to help my doggy? He's sick. Hero : uh, yeah. Where is he? Little Girl : Over there, eating people. That sort of thing, state-wide, would keep the heros very busy whilst the bad guy gets on with the real plan. Drhoz
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential Oscar Lustig ( iirc ) the man who sold the Eiffel Tower, twice. He's really an interplanetary con-man, and has dropped a few von Neumann machines around the place to strip less interesting cities of iron and make fake Towers for sale to other aliens. Dawn Darke
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential Steal the international prototype of the kilogram, then ransom it back. With the reference that ALL masses are compared to gone, confidence in scientific and technological measurements will be shot to hell. Everyone is going to want that thing back, as untouched as possible.
Gnaskar
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential Zimbabwe, and its leadership. That's certainly the work of Nama, the giant snake that "caused" VIPER. Or VIPER itself, perhaps. Or maybe Warlord.
Boll Weevil
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential ...A mentalist villain could command random people to do it...This is an excellent lesson for those players who like to open a fight with their biggest attack. Mind-controlled normals tend to go splat when that happens.
OddHat
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential Environmental Estrogens. Real World Aspect: Thanks to birth control pill use and pesticides that mimic estrogen, our real world food and water supplies are already seriously contaminated. American urban males already have testosterone levels 20% lower than they had forty years ago, animal species are suffering birth defects and sterility, cancers related to excess estrogen are on the rise (including both breast cancer and prostate cancer) and the increase in obesity may actually be in part a response to estrogen poisoning (excess estrogen sparks fat storage, and body fat increases the conversion of testosterone to estrogen). The government admits the problem exists. However, since it's largely invisible, and large corporate interests oppose the regulations needed to fix it, nothing is being done. From a Superhero point of view, your question as a GM: Who is trying to emasculate the Earth, and why?

Basil
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential The Sears Tower and the CN Tower have been locked up tight; no-one can get in or out! And not just locked, but surrounded by a force field of astonishing impenetrability! Whoever did it isn't revealing himself directly; he's broadcasting intermittently, and moving around. His reason for the lock-down? Ransom. He'll release the people in the two Towers (you should've seen that coming) on one condition; the governments of the USA and Canada have to lock down both US/Canada borders for 48 hours, a 48 hour period he's specified. Nobody will be allowed to cross the border in either direction. If this is done, he'll remove the barriers to the CN and Sears Towers. If it isn't, he'll leave those barriers up---forever! Since he's only broadcasting, and no-one knows who he is, there's no way to bargain with him. And he's made it very, very, very clear that the 48 hour period he's named is the only acceptable time. He will not consider a different 48 hours acceptable, not even if it overlaps the time he's named.

And the two brothers can make good plot seeds as well. Suppose they were looking for satellite signals, and intercepted VIPER's comm traffic, or Destroyer's? Or alien invaders? Drhoz
Re: Post A Crime With Game Potential recent stunning incompetence at a russian dance party - they had to move inside because of the weather, so instead of shining the lasers onto the clouds aimed them into the crowd instead... Multiple, severe, eye damage - scarring, retinal damage, etc. Sounds like a plan! Pay a ransom or I'll blind your kids! Heroes just have to figure out how he's intending to do it, before it's too late - as for who, perhaps Oculon?
