OddHat
Tokyo! Hong Kong! Canberra! All face certain destruction! Only Asia's Mightiest Cinematic Superheroes can save the world! Action! Comedy! Melodrama! Masks! Be an International Superhero! ------------------- This thread will contain character write ups for my GenCon 2009 Cinematic Superheroes game. Each homage character must have been featured in a live action film made in Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, Tokyo, Australia, or New Zealand. Right now I'm planning 6-8 characters, including homages to: Darna The Machine Girl Silverhawk Black Mask Jet Jaguar The Saint of Gamblers Other characters may include homages to the New Black Roses, The Masked Rider, The Heroic Trio, and others. If you're going to be at GenCon, give it a try. If not, as characters pop up in this thread, feedback is welcomed.
OddHat
Re: GenCon 2009 Hong Kong Cinematic Superheroes Australian candidates: Street Angel http://www.superheroeslives.com/internationals/street_angel_(2009).htm Ocean Girl http://www.superheroeslives.com/internationals/ocean_girl_(1994).htm Cybergirl http://www.superheroeslives.com/internationals/cybergirl_(2001).htm Silver Shadow, Crab Girl, or Exoskeleton http://www.superheroeslives.com/internationals/legacy_of_the_silver_shadow_(2002).htm Any other suggestions for live action Australian Superheroes are welcomed. Mad Max and Crocodile Dundee aren't quite the genres I'm going for. And one possibility from New Zealand, Captain Extraordinary: http://www.superheroeslives.com/internationals/amazing_extraordinary_friends_(2006).htm

Not sure I'll be able to use the Australia or New Zealand angle. I just don't know these guys.

I just don't know these guys. The only one on your list I'm familiar with is Cybergirl. I'd heard of Ocean Girl before though. I could try to give you a writeup, but that still wouldn't really help you get a feel for her. You would really need to watch the show. Or, at a pinch, be familiar with Brisbane, Queensland, which was where the show was filmed. Still... you seem to be using homages anyway. That gives you a bit of leeway. Incidentally, a couple of Power Ranger series were filmed in New Zealand, starring Australian actors as well as Kiwis, Canadians and Americans. EDIT: Incidentally, that page you provided a link to is full of mistakes. For example, it gets the name of the actresses who play the Mayor's snobby twin daughters wrong. Rather than "Origlasson", they are Lisa and Jessica Origlasso.
OddHat
Re: GenCon 2009 Hong Kong Cinematic Superheroes EDIT: Incidentally' date=' that page you provided a link to is full of mistakes.[/quote'] Welcome to the Internet. I'm using it as a jumping off point for live action characters I don't know; the final write ups will use multiple sources, including actually watching (at least some of) the TV show or movie the character comes from. These are homage characters for the usual reasons. Most of these characters are in mutually incompatible fictional universes, and have wildly different power levels both compared to one another and from episode to episode of their own series. The simplest way to get them to work together in a story is to go back to core concepts and build again from there. Pretty much like any other Wold Newton / Elseworlds story. That would be easy to write up... Has to be live action, and I need to be able to find stills to use as character art. That said, if you can find a link, please send it. Amazing Extraordinary Friends from New Zealand actually looks pretty good, even if the characters are a bit young for what I'm looking for. assault
Re: GenCon 2009 Hong Kong Cinematic Superheroes The really weird thing is just how many Australian and NZ actors appear in US superhero movies. Most are villains, of course: Casanova Frankenstein, Dr Doom, the Joker, Agent Smith (The Matrix) Some are heroes: Wolverine, the Hulk. And a few are supporting cast: Nicole Kidman was in one of the lamer Bat-Movies.

It looks freakin' awesome. It's freakin' bizarre. These two things are not mutually exclusive. That said, I'm only giving space to one Growth Super, and while Dai Nipponjin might make a fun tongue in cheek choice, I'm not sure what he could do in the parts of the adventure that take place on a normal scale. The nice thing about a Jet Jaguar tribute is that even at normal size, he can still justify a reasonable power set.

Orphans Narda and Ding lived with their grandmother in a small villiage near Manila. One clear night, Narda, still a child, saw a falling star, and heard the crash of a meteor nearby. Running to investigate, she found a glowing white stone. On the stone were strange characters, letters of no Earthly language. Somehow Narda could read the word. The word was a name. The name was Varga. Without knowing why, Narda swallowed the stone, and shouted the name. The child vanished, replaced by a supernatural warrior woman. A legend began. Over the years, Varga has fought snake women, gangsters, strange cults and monsters of every description. At first Varga and Narda were two people sharing a single body, but as time went on their personalities merged, and now the adult Narda is identical to Varga, even sharing a few of her powers. Ding and Grandmother still remain in Narda's life, and Varga has become the champion of the Philippines. Personality/Motivation: Kind hearted and a devout Catholic, Narda sees no choice but to use the powers of Varga to protect the innocent and serve the world. She briefly flirted with working directly for the government of the Phillipines, but found the corruption she encountered too much to tolerate. She is both fascinated and disturbed by her ever growing knowledge of the world's secret history. Quote: "Surrender! You cannot stand against me." Powers/Tactics: Varga has a number of powers of psionic origin. These include superhuman strength, a psychokinetic force field, enhanced reflexes, flight, and telepathy (including telepathic projection). Against most foes Varga will wade in punching, relying on her strength and toughness to see her through. Against foes she can't overcome directly, she will attempt to use her Telepathic abilities. Varga is fast enough to abort to a dodge or dive for cover when facing those few enemies powerful enough to seriously harm her. Varga's most subtle power is her telepathically enhanced Allure. Always persuasive, able to stir crowds and build friendships, using her Allure Varga can cause enemies to lose confidence, or even turn them into allies. (The Allure slot of her MP adds +6 to her PRE skills and 6d6 to her PRE attacks; use it when amazing feats of persuasion are called for). Campaign Use: Varga is based on Mars Ravelo's Darna, a character created in 1947 in the Philippines as a Filipina Captain Marvel; other influences included Wonder Woman, Superman, and in her later incarnations Ultraman. This version of the character is scaled to fit into a convention game. With a 60+ year publication history and many hit movies and TV shows, despite her American inspiration, Darna is a true Filipina Heroine. For the 2005 TV version of Darna, drop her STR down to 35, add some basic Martial Arts, add slots for Heat Vision and Concussive Blasts to her MP, lower her PD to 15, drop the regeneration, and add Missile Deflection and throwing disks (an EB). The write up above is a Golden Age comics version. Appearance: Narda is an attractive Filipina apparently in her early twenties. As Varga, she becomes astonishingly beautiful. Dalisay normally dresses conservatively, while Varga wears a revealing costume in red (see picture).
