And now for a blatant rip...I mean homage

"My name is Nicholas Fury. I used to be a spy until..."

Man on Wrist Vid Communicator: We've got a burn notice on you. You're blacklisted.

"When you're burned you've got nothing. No cash, no credit, no job history. You're stuck in whatever city they decide to dump you in."

Fury: Where am I?

La Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine: New York.

"You do whatever work comes your way."

*shot of Goblin Glider blowing up*

"You rely on anyone who's still talking to you. A trigger happy on-and-off girlfriend."

La Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine: Should we shoot them?

"An old friend who used to inform on you to SHEILD."

Dum Dum Dugan: You know spies. Bunch of bitchy little girls.

"X-men too..."

*Shot of Wolverine. followed by scene of Fury and Dugan as a Nick's cellphone rings*

Dum Dum Dugan: Hey, is that Logan again?

"...if you're desperate."

Logan: Some mutants need your help, Nick.

"Bottom line, as long as your burned, you're not going anywhere."

Re: Paths Not Taken

Bruce Wayne's father manages to knock the gun out of the mugger's hand and into his own. He gets the mugger to surrender. Bruce grows up fascinated by guns and becomes a fast draw, and sharp shooter. But crime grows with Bruce turning a blind eye to it all.

When Bruce becomes older, he and his family are attacked at their mansion. In the process, his mother and father are killed, and it's from the same mugger as before. Bruce shoots him into a coma. But Bruce stops himself from killing the man. He decides that it's time to stop being "as blind as a bat" to crime.

Bruce dons a costume, and becomes the Batman; the Dark Gunman

Batman reaches in and rescues the man who would become Joker from the vat of chemicals.

Re: Paths Not Taken

Jane Anger - A Fury chosen by Nemesis travels to man's world to seek vengeance and punish the guilty. Wields a barbed whip.

The Human Lantern - Scientist Phineas Horton uses a glowing green meteorite as the power source for his android.

Incendiary Blonde - Scientist Phineas Horton makes a statue of a woman out of clay and brings it to life with his purple ray. A flaw in the process causes her to burn on contact with air.

The Black Magician - As a child, Bruce Wayne witnesses the death of his parents at the hands of a mugger. He learns dark magic, gaining the ability to summon creatures of the night - vampires and demons - to terrify and kill criminals.

Johnny America - Born on the 4th of July, Johnny discovers that when he whistles the first three bars of the Star Spangled Banner he can summon the Spirit of America. To his delight this turns out to be a young blonde woman in a skimpy costume with powers much akin to those of a genie. She appears in a cloud of sparkling stars.

The Green Shield - Thousands of years ago, a green flame fell to Earth, and was worked into the form of a shield. Railroad engineer Alan Scott finds the shield and is instructed in its use by a mysterious voice.

American Werewolf - Patriotic Steve Rogers is bitten by a werewolf, which he manages to kill. He decides to use his lupine powers to fight the nazis.

The Vampire - Came to Earth from another world as an infant. Doctor Thomas Wayne and his wife raised the boy as their own. His otherworldly origins gifted him with incredible strength and speed. His adoptive parents admonished him to use these gifts wisely but he ignored their advice and lived a dissolute life until the age of 21, when he received a telegram saying they had been killed in a hold-up gone wrong. He resolved to put his powers to good use – crimefighting. Realising that criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot, he uses his strange abilities to pretend to be a vampire.

The Blazing Ghost – Iola, a witch burned at the stake, uses flame to take revenge on evil-doers and send them to hell.

Captain Atlantis - Namor Mckenzie, a sickly Atlantean of mixed race, is given a super serum so he can fight for his people. He wields a net and trident made of a special metal.

DC kinda did this for a parallel Bruce Wayne. The movie he went to see with his parents wasn't Zorro, it was a cowboy flick (I forget which one). His code name is Paladin, and he is exactly what you would expect Batman to be if Batman were a gunfighter.

Now' date=' what to do with Rick Jones?[/quote']

How about absolutely nothing? THAT would be different.

After going through the stereotypcial rebel-without-a-cause phase, Rick Jones settles down, marries, has 2.1 kids, and now runs an aluminium siding business in Poughkeepsie.

And at no time has he ever encountered aliens or supers. Oh, except for that time one of his kids went on a field trip, and almost got Captain America's autograph - he'll tell you that story any chance he gets. Over and over again.

You could do that with any character and get much the same result. "Different" doesn't always mean "valuable".

Re: Paths Not Taken

During the experimental detonation of a gamma bomb, Betty Ross, visiting the test site rushes to save a scientist who has driven onto the testing field for one last tweek of the controls. Pushing the scientist, Bruce Banner, into a trench, Ross is herself is caught in the blast, absorbing massive amounts of radiation.

Now, what to do with Rick Jones?

(Ross becomes the She-Devil, a rampaging green giantess with claws, wings and a tail)

As for Rick Jones, he wasn't there because he was backpacking across Europe. While in Sweden he ran into a cave to escape invading aliens...

Re: Paths Not Taken

True. Guess I'm just venting about Marvel's tendency for a while to shoehorn ol' Rick into just about everything major that was going on.

I just thought that Rick's superpower was to be in the thick of it. 6d6 Luck, only to be at the right place at the right time (-2), or something like that.

Of course the forces of coincidence are far stronger in fiction than in life, esp. in comics, and Rick gives the writers and readers a familiar face to hold on to in whatever situation is convenient. If you can believe that people can fly and shoot energy out of their hands, certainly you can belive that Rick pops up all over the place, right?

That said, I agree that it seems contrived and lazy to do so, esp. since I don't find Rick all that appealing a character to begin with.

Re: Paths Not Taken

The Green Monster - This emerald beast is the strongest, most destructive force on Earth. It lashes out against anything it perceives as a threat, its primitive mind driven only by the basest of urges - safety, food, sex. Howevever it is not truly a living creature, but a psychic construct. It is the id of Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, given physical form when he sleeps and dreams, his incredible will no longer checked by super-ego.

Alternatively, in an all-Marvel universe, the Hulk could be Professor X's id, but then you lose the green connection.

Fin Fang Foom! - When teenager Rick Jones shouts 'Fin Fang Foom!' he opens a portal to the Negative Zone and switches places with Marvel's most menacing monster.

She-Skrull - Bookish lawyer Jennifer Walters is genetically modified using skrull DNA to become She-Skrull.

Doomsday - This rampaging force of fury was the product of an unholy union between Trigon and his own daughter, Raven.

Re: Paths Not Taken

The Champions (Sorry if not appropriate for the thread)

NightHawk: Mark Whitaker, a bright college student who seemed to have it all. He was sporty, popular, attractive and his projects in computer science attracted big corporations.

On the faithful day, he was meeting with the CEO of Harmon Industries about his computer systems in the science labs. The CEO had brought his wife and his son James Harmon IV. Mark was demonstrating some of his inventions, and the CEO was very impressed.

And then VIPER attacked, attempting to kidnap the CEO and his family as well as some impressive technology. One unfortunate explosion killed both CEO and his wife, and horrifically scared the son. Mark was mostly unharmed, but VIPER got away.

Deciding he needed to stop villains like these from ruining lives again, he chose to train his body and mind to become a super hero, building various gadgets to help him in his crusade.

However he also realised it was important to inspire hope in others, and being a man in a mask unsupervised would be foolish. As the hero Goldhawk, he became a sanctioned hero, wearing a costume similar to Booster Gold (except with wings) and no mask, freely showing his identity. He is one of Millenium City's great golden hopes, although some say he is a bit naive.

Witchcraft: Bethany Duquesne, grew up under the tutaledge of her high society parents, who were secretly members of the Circle of the Scarlet Moon. One of the family friends were the Harmons, and by the age of 7, she and James were very close friends (although she was very shy due to her parents' real nature).

3 days before Her 12th birthday, PRIMUS agents ransacked a meeting of the Circle and captured many of the members involved. Bethany's parents and twin sister weren't found but as she had no legal guardians she went to live with the Harmons.

As the years went on, James and Bethany became more then friends, often conversing in French when in school. After achieving a degree in business, she became James' personal assistant. After his parents' death she has become the only person who reach into that sweet person inside anymore.

Her mystical powers were never formally developed, but she keeps having dreams about some strange man called Bohdan Stanislavski.

Defender: After the death of his parents, and weeks of recovery in the hospital, James knew he could never let something like this happen again. He had to stop them, using the only thing he had. His genius with building.

But he couldn't be a simple super hero. They did nothing to stop the root of the problem. They weren't proactive enough, letting things like this occur. He would become a weapon of Justice. He would become the Guardian.

His designs weren't the sleek models with non-lethal weaponry. He had a large bulky design, dark Blue teched out with every concievable weapon ever built; grenades, rocket launchers, plasma Cannons. He could destroy armies with his suit.

The Guardian began his assult on VIPER bases around the world on 2002, as well as on non-super terrorist groups around the world. The media dubbed him as dangerous as Dr Destroyer. His suit and attitude has made him a great target for the Warlord for his Warmachine.

The only one who can control him and stop him from going over the deep end is Bethany. He made an emergency armoured suit for her, incase he ever needed rescue but hasn't told her yet.

I'll do Sapphire and Ironclad soon, after I hear that this is alright and I can continue.

Re: Paths Not Taken

Sapphire: Corazon Valenzuela, developed her powers accidentally when she was 11, practising for a talent show with her friends in their band. She nearly flash fried one of the guitars.

Her parents were alarmed and she was contained in her room for weeks until they could find out what to do. Eventually, a charming man with sleek black hair came to their house. He claimed to work for the government and would take her to a special 'super tank' where she would be trained to control her abilities. Her parents of course signed her up, and said their farewells.

The man didn't take her to a government facility. He took her to an IHA camp, and she watched with horror as other children were beaten due to their powers. She was starved for 3 days, before help arrived.

PRIMUS found her and 7 other children in the camp. PRIMUS helped them with months of therapy, and returned the children they could home. But now Corazon had a new purpose. She forgot her foolish desire to become a musician. No way that would have worked anyway.

She enlisted in PRIMUS, became a special agent. Working alongside her good friend and silver Avenger Mayte Sanchez, she deals personally with various superhumans in Millenium City. She doesn't appreciate their flashyness, but is aware of how good they are at preserving the peace.

"But why must the superheroines wear such skimpy costumes? It's demeaning." she often says to Mayte on nights off.

Ironclad: Upon joining the Dorvala army, young recruit Drogen Lar was given an incredible opportunity. A few weeks earlier a rogue group of generals had been planning to involuntarily fuse armour alloy to a subject to make a super soldier to overthrow the government. While the generals were arrested, the project had some merit.

Drogen Lar's DNA was compatible for the project, and if he chose to agree to the process (which had risks but was carefully monitored rather then a random explosion) he would join the ranks of the feared Dorvalan Space Marines.

Drogen jumped at the chance to have such an honour, and the process was a resounding success. He became the steel soldier and served with distinction. Infact, he became General of the entire army due to both his reputation and leadership prowess.

An expedition to the Velarian Confederation led to a peace making alliance with the Fassi, who sent one of their own super soldiers Tren Tarrec (Herculan) to serve alongside Drogen. The two became fast friends and soon the war was over.

Now, with Dorvalan empire stronger then ever, The Steel General turns his attention to the dangerous planet, known as Earth...

Now that is a strange turn of events for the heroes? But what of the villains, Firewing and Talisman? I could tell you if you guys want to hear. Or you could make up your own stories.

Re: Paths Not Taken

Engineering genius Tony Stark experiences inspiration so intense it is almost madness. He labours for months until he has constructed an impossible object - the Cosmic Cube. Once the madness has passed, Tony studies the device. His experiments result in many bizarre phenomena on Earth and he concludes that the Cube is too powerful - it must be destroyed. However it has developed a will of its own and escapes its creator.

Elektra al Ghul is the daughter of the infamous criminal mastermind Ra's al Ghul. Brutally trained from birth by her father and his League of Assassins she became the perfect assassin, the ultimate biological weapon. However the death of her father and his unexpected failure to resurrect via the Lazarus Pit have shaken her confidence in the rightness of his cause. She is no longer the relentless killer she once was and has even formed a romantic relationship with her father's old foe, the Batman.

She-Wolf - After the death of her father, mutant Elektra Natchios was filled with despair and hatred. She volunteered for an experiment which bonded adamantium to her bones and gave her a set of metal claws, becoming a almost unkillable force of fury and death.

Abbot Abomination - In a future ravaged by nuclear armageddon, the Gamma Ray Church worship the bomb. Followers expose themselves to radiation in the hopes of gaining divine favor. One such follower was Emil Blonsky who achieved great power and status. He volunteered to travel into the past to thwart Bruce Banner's efforts to prevent World War Three.

Re: Paths Not Taken

Oh thank goodness someone made this thread! :)

Mary Jane Watson gets bitten by the spider instead of Peter Parker.

She immediately uses her powers to get out of her crappy (probably abusive) household and starts living big. Then tragedy strikes as a robber she could have stopped ends up killing Peter who jumps in the way of the bullet meant for Uncle Ben.

World torn upside down, she becomes Spider-Woman.

Best,

-SC
