PvPing: The Hero Games

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

So far I've not enjoyed it. Every time I've tried it it turns into basically a mosh that's really hard to tell what's going on and my team mates are no where to be found as I get triple-quadruple teamed by the other side. It seems it would be very hard to coordinate tactics without something like Skype as you definitely don't have time to type into the chat interface during the battle. So, I only do it as often as needed to get the mission EPs.

I suck at it also. Tried it with 2 characters. Martial Artist who just got worked and Archer who held her own (Taser Arrow for the win, as they say, especially as it is bugged right now). If you try this, I highly recommend a ranged character. Also, do it at level 9-10, 19-20, etc. because what the game does is break the battles into increments of 10 levels. So a level 11 char will get bumped to level 20, but won't have any new powers/ advantages (not to mention your second focus stat) or level appropriate gear.

Hero Games is fun enough (I am not a big fan of PVP), 5 on 5, if you are in a group it is always kept together, provided everyone does. I haven't tried the second one (B.A.S.H.) yet, I believe it is a free for all. The last one takes place in the prison and has to do with 1 group trying to break out and the other trying to stop them.

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

I suck at it. My main is a Might build' date=' and foes just tend to use holds/freezes and move out of my range to attack. Also my 360 controller has super slow turn rates, so I have to pick up the mouse and remember what buttons control what effects in PVP.[/quote']

There's a command to adjust the turn rate of a controller; see here.

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

I'm very much not a strong fan of instanced, arena-style RvR. I've tried the Hero Games a couple times but, it's just not very fun for me. As someone else mentioned, it turns into a mosh pit of activity in the middle of the cage.

And just for comparison's sake, I do enjoy PvP. But my preferred flavor of PvP is a realm vs. realm set up similar to Dark Age of Camelot, Warhammer Online, or the PvP servers in World of Warcraft.

I've done PvP in the arena twice. It's very hard to tell what's going on. I don't use a game controller (I use the mouse to control facing; the standard UI for that is a bear, but you can turn it into a toggle), though to a certain degree you don't actually need to, tab targeting can find things you can't actually see.

Greetings

I have tried the PVP, but find it frustrating. My main complaint is that the arenas are too stinking SMALL!!! If you could zoom out a little more and get a better idea of what is going on, where everyone was, it might be playable.

As it is now I end up hitting the TAB until I find someone close, then mash the attack button.

I really enjoyed the way Guild Wars had their PVP. Or if they add more types of maps, like Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Escort, Checkpoints, or any others, I think it could really add to the game as a whole.

I really see a lot of potential in PVP, it just isn't there yet.

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

I'm not much of a PvP person, and since I prefer melee types, the Hero Games are frustrating. My Might character in beta would get hit with holds, then dogpiled. Luckily, I had Invulnerability, so if I went into block mode and waited, it was really tough to put me down.

I only tried it in beta because there were a couple of missions. Access to lucha costumes was my other motivation.

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

I tried it on my PA character because of the lvl 10 quest... and shockingly landed on a good team - I think we won all 3 matches at least 2 of 3. I placed about the middle of the pack. on most of those. Normally I am awful at pvp. Invulnerability and the barrage of attacks from power armor seemed to be a good set of powers for pvp.

I thought there were other types of pvp besides the cage match team vs. team. Is it perhaps level related?

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

For those complaining about PvP being confusing, one little thing you can do is invite everyone on your team onto an actual team. Then you can all see eachother on the map. It makes it easier if you want to stick together and you can monitor each other's health and tell when someone is in the respawn area and such.

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

PVP sucks. You really have to specialty build for it--or be very exclusive who you team with. Don't expect much help, as the PVP centric players tend to exemplify everything bad you can find in MMO players.

Forming a league of PVE players who occasionally PVP will work, but be warned certain builds just will never, ever do well at PVP.

I don't think this is unique to CO; in my experience it's true of all MMOs with PvP. Player versus player seems to attract the players with the worst attitudes and the poorest socialization. I've known some PvPers who were great guys and fun to play with, but they seem to be the exception rather than the rule much of the time.

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

I'm anti PvP. I've got the reflexes for it; I generally rock FPS's when I choose to play them. I just find the types of people that gravitate to PvP in MMO's to be the types of people I generally try to avoid in MMO's and out. I like following storylines and getting immersed in a setting. Also, in FPS's all characters start from the same baseline, so its more of an even footing - it comes down to gear, tactics, keeping your cool, and twitch reflexes. PvP on the other hand characters don't start on an even footing; it really just comes down to min maxing in most cases.

On that subject, I wish CO had more branching storylines with multiple steps so it feels like more of an unfolding story (CoH does a better job at this IMO), though I know that a lot of people just want one step easy reward missions so I'm likely in the minority there.

However, I must say that it was REALLY COOL to see the HERO Hex-Man icon in the game!

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

I'm not a PvP-centric player by any stretch of the imagination (I'm a roleplayer and explorer, mostly), but I've done 95 UTC cagematches with Intensity and I have to say, I really, really enjoy it. The PvP feels very fun in this game.

Maybe my character's build happens to be good for PvP, I dunno, but I feel like I do very well most of the time.

I haven't tried any of the other PvP games besides the basic low-level cagematch yet. I'm very interested in the Stronghold thing. Sounds awesome. (Especially since Intensity is a former inmate there!)

Re: PvPing: The Hero Games

Greetings

I think that there is the potential for a good quality PVP experience there, it just hasn't hit it's stride yet.

I've been watching the development of this game for almost 2 years, and it seemed that PVP was a late addition. I think it still needs some work.

One easy fix, that I've already suggested, is BIGGER ARENAS!!! There is really no way (at least not for me) to use any strategy or tactics in PVP with the current size. You just cannot even see who or where everybody is. I even have a hard time telling who is friend or foe.

I repeat: BIGGER ARENAS!!!!

Considering the (possibly perceived) weakness of melee types, it seems that larger arenas would turn PvP into a flat out shooting gallery.

Oh, I certainly agree--there is nothing prticualry bad about CO's PVP--its just the type of attitude that comes from PVP'rs--especially the constant demands for game alteration that get far more attention than they deserve.

Changing the game for PVP sake is akin to amending a RPG's rules due to the demands of the loudest yelling player out of a group comprised of 90% the rules abusing munchkin power gamers.
