I've already accepted that this Thor is different from the comics.  I enjoy this character for who he is.  Is the story well done?  Is it gripping and interesting?  Thats what matters.

Trying to find the logic in whether a 2000 yr old warrior can be broken by grief is like complaining why Star Trek planets all have earth-like gravity and atmosphere or that phasers make noise in space...its pointless.  FWIW, how can anyone definitivelly say what a 2000 year old being would think or feel?  What there worldview would be? There's never been one nor will there be.  Want to use an old human as comparison?  Fine, I know many 75 plus year old people who have learned nothing in their long life and most likely closed their minds to any new thoughts by the time they were 20.

We used to joke that the game you GM'd was the game you wanted to play ruined by players who seemed to want to play their game.

    So, serious post time.

Over the weekend I got an email from the school saying that there had been a social media threat against the school and that the necessary precautions were being taken.  I hadn't seen the threat but I asked my son (whose native habitat is social media) and he said that it was your run of the mill gonna-shoot-up-the-school online threat.  He didn't seem too bothered by it and, having grown up in an era of school prank bomb threats, neither was I.  So on Monday he set off for school as usual.

Then we got a text message from the parents of one of his friends letting us know that they were keeping their son home from school that day.  And it turns out they were in the majority--2/3 of the students stayed home from school on Monday.  If my son wasn't bothered at first, he sure as hell was when his classes were largely empty and there were a dozen cops roaming the campus.

Now it is Wednesday and half the students still aren't going to school.  We are getting emails from the teachers begging parents to send their kids back to class.  (And bravo to the teachers for being there, I certainly don't get death threats at my place of employment.)  The place is still teeming with cops.  No one has any information about the threat that they can tell us, because there is an ongoing investigation.

So I guess this bothers me on two levels.

First of all--seriously wtf kind of worst timeline is this, where people can literally threaten to kill kids, and we have to take those threats this seriously?

Second, as a parent, what do I do?  I try to impress the importance of education, I have literally shown my kids how schoolkids in Afghanistan risk their lives to go to school.  But is it negligent to send him to school?  Is it making a mountain out of a molehill to keep him home?  What's the solution here?

(Note that I am posting here rather than the Political Thread because I just don't have the energy to fight that particular battle, again, right now.  This is just somewhere between a vent and a plea.  Because this has all become very real, even if nothing has actually happened yet.)

When we first meet Thor in his debut movie, he's been living what amounts to an extended childhood. Over the 1,500 years of his life he's always been privileged, never known failure, never had to suffer the consequences of his actions. (We've learned that humans can live that way for at least seven decades.)   He defined himself as a warrior, a prince, a hero, but in the end he failed at all those things. Over the span of a decade he lost his power (albeit temporarily), lost his lover, lost his whole family, lost all his closest friends, lost his home, and lost the weapon that was like a part of him. He failed to protect his people, and lost most of them. He failed to save half the people in the entire universe. That so overwhelmed him that he lost the will to do anything but eat and drink and play video games, becoming a mental and physical mockery of who he was.

I don't care how long you've lived, if all that doesn't prompt deep soul searching, I don't know what could.

The Batman: Surprisingly good movie that lets Batman be a detective for a change. Gotham is portrayed as dark and moody, and reminded me heavily of the rainy Los Angeles in Blade Runner. It's a long movie, but is now available on HBOmax, so it's possible to pause for bathroom or snack breaks. (HBOmax)

Iron Man: I re-watch this one every once in a while, still a good watch. (Disney+)

Spider-Man: No Way Home: Good mix of nostalgia and action. A good watch. (4K UHD)

Imaging how bad the female version would be.  Each breast larger than the head. Legs 1.5 longer and 1.5 thinner than they should be and no visible feet.  Forget him and the stupid 501 jeans he rode in wearing.
(Does anybody else remember that dumb-a$$ Levi’s commercial he did?)
