It just hit me... Donald Trump's behavior toward his opponents has been the political equivalent of an Internet troll. Making harsh accusations often not supported by fact, then acting offended by and lashing out at anyone who calls him on it; or proclaiming them a joke after the fact, and scorning people who didn't "get it."

Frankly, were I or another poster to engage in these types of verbal shenanigans in this thread ("many people are saying...) we'd get banned or moderated. It is unfortunate that is not available for Presidential candidates.

Not necessarily. The policy differences between the two parties used to be smaller. The difference between GHW Bush and Bill Clinton was substantially smaller than that between Dubya and Kerry, for example. The difference between Trump and Clinton is stark.

"Which of these candidates has a realistic chance to win, and of them, which is the least objectionable and will do the least harm to the most vulnerable?" is also a valid moral choice. If one candidate's election will put the lives and rights of some of the most vulnerable citizens at risk, then the maximum moral priority is not to vote for the candidate who most closely aligns with one's personal political preferences, it's to vote for the candidate who is most capable of defeating the candidate who will bring about that adverse outcome. YMMV but I think it's something to think carefully about.

Honestly, the widespread notion that Donald Trump is somehow "non-establishment" (and I'm not specifically accusing you of that, Jeff -- you're just repeating the meme) boggles me. Sure, he was never a politician, but he rubbed elbows with many in the past, and gave high-profile endorsements to some. Many Trump supporters worry about Hillary Clinton being in the pocket of big business. It doesn't seem to have occurred to them that Donald Trump is one of the pockets. Big business is how he made all that campaign-self-financing money. Viewed from the perspective of that priority, voting for him is just cutting out the middle man.

Recently Stephen Colbert brought back his phony right-wing pundit character from his old Colbert Report to his current Late Show, to "explain" the rise of Donald Trump. I will risk the wrath of Dan Simon by linking to that scene from the Late Show, because if you ignore the sarcasm, I believe it's actually quite insightful as to Trump's appeal to his supporters, and why they're so willing to ignore his more outrageous statements. (Dan, I'll readily accept deletion of this if you rule that it crosses the line.)

The thing that makes me sigh is, even if you debunk a couple dozen of these bogus allegations, it doesn't seem to matter. People hold on to this caricature of HRC as this lying, corrupt, greedy conniving Lady Macbeth, not from objective in depth research and observation, but as some tribal article of faith.

Hillary Clinton has changed her position many things over the years, but she has always worked to make things better for woman and children.  If you can walk in single directions and hold to a cause for your entire life then you have a moral compass.  Helping woman and children is Hillary's true north.

Trump has now been denounced by Gold Star families and the VFW for his comments on the Khans. I have a good imagination but I strain to envision the Donald apologizing for anything, ever.

Have you done your due diligence on all candidates running? Trump has talked about bringing back torture, banning Muslims, being blase about Russian aggression, deporting 11 million people in less than 2 years, changing libel laws to make it easier to sue the media, and many many other "out there" policy proposals. That's not hyperbole. Those are his stated positions.
There's ample evidence that he's a malignant narcissist, on top of all that. Several historians have described him as the least qualified major party candidate for president in the history of the country. But, ho hum, a pox on both their houses, not a dimes worth of difference, etc.
