Unfortunately, Trump would likely not be the first President who believe the line should be based on  benefits for himself.  This literally describes EVERY politician, Trump is more obvious I'll give.  And his motivation might be different than you average politician (as in benefitting his business interest rather than for political power)

    4) Given what you claim happened to you, being far too widespread, this alone tells me the Dem voters don't get it (yet).  Apparently constantly and unendingly calling a significant portion of the voters racist just wasn't enough.  So, we'll somehow up the ante?  This has become the Dem windmill (as you referenced Don Quixote).  I don't know if that effected anything externally.  But, if you brazenly throw the worst epithet that can be thrown in our current climate.  You will leave seething towards, will not win them over.  To put it into another classic story, it has become the boy who cried wolf, I think fewer people are continuing to buy it.

(because it would be cool, to blare Hell March through the forest while blasting away Ewoks)

Note:  Though given what my computer thought was "fair".  I'd have to start with 4 light infantry being immediately attacked by 400 Ewoks in friggin tanks!  (yes before I even have time to start laying a base down.)

THis might be difficult for some to take, but I do think some of the "hidden vote" that the polls missed, it has occurred to me where it came from.

In the last decade,  a lot on the liberal side  have made a pretty virulent and aggressive effort to dehumanize the conservative in front of the masses, and it has been quite successful.  Agreeing with Obama, 90 percent of the time has become a requirement to avoid being called racist.  Vote for Hillary or you hate women.   Homophobe.  Warmonger.  Being called racist, is probably the worst insult you can throw in this hyper-PC environment.  A very serious charge that should not be thrown around like candy at Halloween.  Conservatives aren't above such rhetoric, in different forms.  But, quite, honestly, the left has been much more intense and relenting of late.  I think some conservatives were essentially bullied into silence.  You don't say you will vote for a guy, you expect the questionnaire will attack you for supporting.  I think they seethed and yesterday, unleashed.  You cannot say "conservatives are bigots"  and expect me, a conservative, not to take it personally.  I wasn't blinded to vote for Trump.  But, others might have seen this moment as their time of revenge.

Not to say, never to use such language.  But, I would hope, maybe, it is used more carefully in the future.  And not as the political weapon it has become.

The Dems will either have to move forward and adapt or keep going with this "never my fault" attitude.  It was a shock, so I understand somewhat, but being conservative-leaning and looking at it from that side, blame it on everything but themselves can only help the conservatives.  Clinton got beat partly, probably mostly for her (or appearance thereof-whichever fits one's narrative) corruption.  Less people were enthused for her because of that.

I'm also frankly tired of many Dem politicians condescending arrogance.  "he cant possibly find fault with our policies, he must be KKK-loving, woman-hating homophobe who beats homeless people on the weekend."

Though, those Johnson probably picked were probably more disenfranchised conservatives than liberals (with Stein vice-versa).  If so, what you're saying doesn't amount to what yo think it means.  Quite, possibly if not for 3rd-partys Trump takes the popular too.
