  1. Feet sinking into the straining pavement beneath him, the gargantuan combatant fixed his beady-eyed stare upon the frightened camera crew on top of the parking deck. He draws himself up, one hand placed upon his hip in his best dramatic pose and boldly declares, "I... AM... MANOPAUSE!" Something like that, Squirrel? Doc
  2. We had a similar thread a while back. I suggested a combination of the old "meet in a barfight" schtick combined with the "Lost weekend". i.e. DM:You wake up, and open your eyes. After a while you realize you're looking at a cieling. A strange cieling. You stir, and look around. You appear to be lying on the floor of a bar. There is a large hole in one wall. The place looks like a battle took place there. There are several people in costumes also lying on the floor. You've never seen them before in your life. A policeman peeks his head in the hole in the wall. He says, "Ah! Is it over? Looks like the guy got away. Well, no worries , we're sure you'll track him down. Sorry to bother you like this, but could one of you move yer vehicle? The firetruck can't get by it." As the players get up and question the cop, they'll find out that he knows all their hero names, and that they announced themselves as a new hero team about a week and a half ago. Oh, and when they look at the date, they'll realize they have no memory of the past two weeks. Then it's up to the party to figure out how they got together, who can fly the vehicle. Oh, and where is that secret base, anyway? Doc

    Xmen Campaign

Re: Re: Re: New Mutants Actually, this is the one area where I always disagreed with the writers for NM. If Cypher had just realized it, he could have been the toughest combatant of the team. Many times he used his power in order to read body language and know what an opponent was about to do. It should have occurred to him to view martial arts as a form of communication. Since his power gives him the ability to "speak" as well as understand a language, he could have become the world's premier martial artist in about 20 minutes of study. Ultimately, the character was killed by his own inferiority complex.
  5. The one that springs most quickly to mind was from a player in a brief Champions campaign I ran. Her name was Dynamo. She got really upset if you accidently pronounced it "Domino". Anywho, she was a short, red-headed Irish lass. She was the party brick, with absorbing powers that fed her strength. She quickly got nicknamed Thumper because she was always saying some variant of "I'm gonna Thump sumthin'." "Hush, or I'll Thump you but good!" "I'm gonna Thump you one!" Doc

    Xmen Campaign

Re: New Mutants For what it's worth, the original Thunderbird was and X-man. However, he got killed early on. His younger brother manifested the same mutation, but joined the Hellions because he blamed Proffesor X for this brother's death. What I'm really curious about, Archon, is why you wouldn't recommend Warlock or Cypher as PCs? Warlock is an excellent character if you want to play an alien/outsider type. Cypher's only drawback was his own raging inferiority complex and a lack of imagination. His power was perfectly adequite if he just realized how to use it. Doc

  8. Tech, apparently you haven't been reading the thread. Allow me to 'splain. No, there is to much. Allow me to sum up. Person asking question is a player who has a PC who happens to be an Undead Hero. "Batman" target in question is another PC playing a Batman clone who has decided (in character) that Undead are inherently evil. So "Batman" has taken it upon himself to destroy Undead Hero, despite the fact they are both hero PC's and "Batman" has a code against killing (living people). There have been two fights so far. At best, it came out as a draw. Undead Hero is looking for an edge. Perhaps making "Batman" undead so he'll feel compelled to kill himself? Doc
  9. Hey! I let you know weeks in advance, and the week before I was perfectly willing to keep on playing but everyone else wanted to stop. As for this weekend, I didn't schedule the Family Reunion. Does this mean y'all didn't play last week? Doc
  10. I take it we're not going to mention the "Lazy Susan of Ineffable Evil"? Doc
  11. C is for Controller when in reference to him personally, and for Committee when in reference to the group. Yeah, have the group AND the leader named HUAC. Confuse the good guys! Doc
  12. My speedster, Flicker, actually had a power with similar special effects. If I remember off the top of my head, it was a Teleport power that was bought with Usable Against Others (this was 4th edition), with the limitation of only things he could pick up. The SFX of this was that he would start at point A, run to point B, pick up an object (character), run to point C, put it down, and then run back to point A so quickly that you wouldn't see him do more than change position. He could also use it for zipping from A to B without being seen to move. I seem to remember that we modified it later so that after dropping the item at point C he could instead run to point D, providing all the points in question were in the teleport range of point A. It was a lovely way to get innocents out of harms way, or to set a bad guy in front of the Brick's wound up Haymaker. Doc
  13. A Player's Sacred Trust The GM's responsibility is to challenge the players. The Player's responsibility is to hit the GM with something unexpected. Good players take their responsibilities seriously. Doc
  14. Here's a bit from an old Vampire the Masquerade game. Our cast consists of Drake, the childe of the Ventrue Prince of the city and de-facto Sherrif, Malthus, a recently embraced Toreador who has been placed in Drake's care, and Geoffrey, a recently revived Malkavian who spent 15 years in torpor immediately after his embrace, and is also in Drake's care. For those who aren't familiar with Vampire, just think of Drake as a somewhat pompus business man, Malthus as a wealthy bookworm, and Geoffrey as an English mental patient (read "Raving Lunatic") with a military fixation. The setting is Michigan in early November (VERY COLD!), and Drake is in a parking lot with a large sewer grate trying to get some information from the Nosferatu who live in the sewers. He's trying to keep warm while waiting for the particular Nosferatu with the information he needs to get there. Geoffrey is waiting in the car. Malthus calls Drake's car phone with some information (I dont' even remember what it was anymore!). G: "Drake's car" M: "Geoffrey?" G: "Yes." M: "Where's Drake?" G: "He's standing outside." M: "What's he doing." G: "He appears to be flapping his arms up and down like a chicken." M: (to himself) "My god, it's contagous!" Doc
  15. Thowing playing cards great distances isn't based on strength. It's based on skill. Gambit has been at it long enough that he doesn't have a skill roll anymore, his chance of failure is too low. So the card always goes where he wants it to. 'Course, that doesn't mean that the target is there when the card arrives. Doc
  16. See, I'd be more tempted to ask the question: Can you buy enough Density Increase to have your own gravity field? And how do you buy that power? And how many teammates would Kid Neutron have? Doc
  17. To kill a Batman... First, he is clever. So you have to be simple. Second, he sees the obvious, so you have to be clever. Third, he learns as he fights someone, so you must make him fight someone else. Ok. You'll need a couple other supervillans. Possibly supervillian teams. You hire them to aggrivate Batman in their own particular style. You can let them know that the goal is to kill him, but NEVER let them know who you are. You sit back and watch. Notice how he goes after them. Observe every detail. Then, when he's firmly focused on them, and not you, you set up your flunkies for him to be taken down at the place of your choice. Watch carefully as he takes all of them down. Then shoot him THROUGH THE OPEN PART OF THE COWL with a high powered rifle. Don't go for the body shot. Why does no one do this? Because they all want to bask in the glory of being the so-and-so that killed Batman. They don't bother to get on with the job. Batman is tough, but he can be surprised like anyone else. You just need to teach him what to expect, then hit him with the unexpected. Doc
  18. I don't think we've every had a death in a champions game. Come close to losing a PC a time or two, but I can't think of any actual deaths. But it's not due to any CvsK ideals. The group I play with concentrates more on the role-playing aspects. We deal with what is appropriate for the character. A few examples: One of our Champions campaigns is just three PC's: Psi Lord, Photon Blue, and Anaba. Psi Lord is (obviously) a Mentalist. He's donned the spandex because he feels a certain sense of social responsibility. He has powers beyond the norm, so he should use them responsibly, and one of those responsibilities is to stop people who use their powers irresponsibly. He's a classic CvsK paragon. Photon Blue is an energy projector, and a teen. She is a superhero because she gets off on having powers. She really enjoys when she can do things to someone and they can't do anything to her. For most of us, this is very annoying... But, deep down, she doesn't really want to hurt anyone, she just wants to have fun. She's a good kid. Anaba is a 7 foot tall AmerInd Warrior Shamen. She's a hero because there are dark forces in the world and it's her job to fight them. She's the team brick and a whole lot more. She calls on different totems to give her different powers. But first and foremost, she's a warrior doing her job. People can get killed in battle and she's accepted that. But that's one of the fortunes of battle. She's not going to kill someone who's helpless or murder someone unaware. And just because you won't kill someone doesn't mean you're a good guy. A character I played in a Vampire game wouldn't kill anyone except in self defense. He believed that his purpose in unlife was to sow corruption and to help others bring out the evil in themselves. He was a very nasty character and I had great fun playing him. } But he wouldn't kill people. That would just let them get off easy... Doc
  19. And just HOW did you manage to do that? Doc

  25. And because Kly knows that while I like character concepts where almost ANYTHING is possible, I don't build invincible characters. Each character has a major vunerability or flaw. For example, another character I did with infinite potential: Moleculon, a shape-shifting, body augmenting brick. He broke most of the rules about characteristics and power frameworks. Most of his powers were OIHID. But, for all his flexibility, he had no range attacks other than flinging objects of opportunity. Doc
