The first time I experienced the emotion known as 'bemusement' was when I found out Huck Finn had been banned in some schools. Why? I asked. Because it's "racist," was the answer.
Uh-huh.
Shifting this over to another bigotry issue, I'm fine reading Jane Austen's novels. There's a pervasive attitude that women are physically weak, best if kept in the home, well-suited for only domestic tasks, and that the best thing they can do with their lives is marry a nice, rich man. If these books had been written even 20 years ago, I'd be throwing them across the room. But because there were different expectations when the books were written, I can read and enjoy them for what they are: stories of strong heroines who get what they want.
