It has been suggested that the NGD boards have been clogged with multiple annoying threads, all linking to other, usually funny websites. It was also suggested that they be given a single thread where they may be posted, commented upon, etc., similar to the random musings thread.

Given that I tend to link to other sites quite a bit, and not wanting to be considered annoying, the Thread For Random Links is born. While it may be confusing at times with mixed comments and multiple links, at least it will be less annoying to others and hopefully contributory towards the new character of the NGD board.

I'll open this thread with the funny baby.

We've got threads for catsuit pics, funny pics, big-breast pics, wallpapers...but sometimes I run across pics that don't fit any of those categories. They may be pics of good-looking anime girls, neat maps, sleek aircraft, or whatever.

Since there is no real "matching" thread/topic for things like that, let's create a catch-all for pics that you find "neat" that doesn't fit one of the other categories.

I'll kick it off with a panoramic map of Mars. There is a larger, higher-res version available here if you want it.

Re: I could watch him get slapped around all day

In truth, the big problem with the X-Men is that they're really not suited to be in the Marvel Universe. The Marvel Universe was a proto-Bronze universe from the beginning (or at least Stan Lee's kicking off what we know now as the Marvel Universe). The concept of the X-Men came from a science fiction book, or a couple of them.

Most superhero teams are ultimately about preserving the status quo from various threats. The X-Men are one of the exceptions. They were all about changing the status quo for the better, and built into their fundamental concept was the idea of the human race changing and evolving into a higher species, homo sapiens superior, mutants.

The problem with the X-Men is that the Marvel Universe to some extent remains a status quo universe, somewhat different than our own in some areas but ultimately familiar to everyone. All of the fantastic technology that Reed Richards and Tony Stark invents never fundamentally changes the world at all. For all that people of Earth know about alien worlds and other dimensions nothing ever really happens because of it.

As a result, the X-Men who are all about dealing with change and evolution and so on, are stuck in a universe that doesn't fundamentally allow it. They're stuck with nothing ever improving, nothing ever changing, for better or for worse. The threat of a serious mutant pogrom can't happen, because it would screw up the rest of the universe and they can't really make any progress anywhere because again it would sort of screw things up. Only in alternate timelines is anything interesting allowed to happen. The X-Men really belong in their own universe which is allowed to deviate significantly from our own universe due to the existance of the x-factor, and where more or less all superpowers derive from the x-factor gene complex.

And frankly I don't see the infighting in the X-Men as being all that much worse than what goes on in the Avengers. From what happened to Pym to what happened to the Scarlett Witch and the Vision, to what is going on now in the Avengers, I think they've lost a lot of their heroic advantage. The main advantage is the Avengers tend not to angst, though Spiderman is the past grandmaster of angst.

In Honor of Stupid People . . .

In case you needed further proof that the human race is doomed through stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods.

On a Sears hairdryer -- Do not use while sleeping.
(That's the only time I have to work on my hair.)

On a bag of Fritos -- You could be a winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside.
    (the shoplifter special?)

On a bar of Dial soap -- "Directions: Use like regular soap."
    (and that would be???....)

On some Swanson frozen dinners -- "Serving suggestion: Defrost."
    (but, it's just a suggestion.)

On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom) -- "Do not turn upside down."
    (well...duh, a bit late, huh!)

On Marks &Spencer Bread Pudding -- "Product will be hot after heating."
    (...and you thought????...)

On packaging for a Rowenta iron -- "Do not iron clothes on body."
(but wouldn't this save me time?)

On Boot's Children Cough Medicine -- "Do not drive a car or operate machinery after taking this medication."
(We could do a lot to reduce the rate of construction accidents if we could just get those 5 year-olds with head-colds off those bulldozers.)

On Nytol Sleep Aid -- "Warning: May cause drowsiness."
    (...I'm taking this because???....)

On most brands of Christmas lights -- "For indoor or outdoor use only."
    (as opposed to what?)

On a Japanese food processor -- "Not to be used for the other use."
(now, somebody out there, help me on this. I'm a bit curious.)

On Sainsbury's peanuts -- "Warning: contains nuts."
    (talk about a news flash)

On an American Airlines packet of nuts -- "Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts."
    (Step 3: say what?)

On a child's Superman costume -- "Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly."
(I don't blame the company. I blame the parents for this one.)

On a Swedish chainsaw -- "Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or genitals."
(Oh my God...was there a lot of this happening somewhere?)

Now that you've smiled at least once, it's your turn to spread the stupidity and send this to someone you want to bring a smile to (maybe even chuckle)...

I remember sitting in an excellent restaraunt having one of the finest examples of five star gourmet cooking it has ever been my pleasure to enjoy. the lights were low, my companion was striking. Out of my league in looks, but still, somehow, interested in being there. Raven hair, alabaster skin, clear blue eyes, rosy full lips. She wore a blue silk dress and simple gold jewelry. I wore a tailored suit without a tie and polished shoes. The conversation was brisk and thought provoking, and she had the alluring trick of inflected murmurs and intimate looks. The music was soft, quartet pieces and opera, and the light was soft, indirect, and low. There was a building chemistry. We had established a tempo. I remember the meal. God, it was perfect.

A solid bottle of prosecco with the antipasta: olives in fennel and olive oil served with wedges of Parmigiano-Reggiano, and steaming fresh bread. Then two bottles of light chilled white wine with the primo and secundo: the first being soup, a light pasta salad, and polenta; the second being grilled fish on a bed of rice with roasted nuts and herbs with a side or potatoes roasted with garlic and herbs, and another side of peas cooked with onions and bacon. It was a fantastic meal, and here was this beautiful and attentive woman to enjoy it with.

We were having the dolce, in this case strong italian coffee with biscotti and a rich custard, when the woman at the next table erupted in a giggle and confided with all of the neighboring tables that "...there is nothing like a good brisk fucking!" followed by a few other intimate details no one else in eashot had asked to know. It put an odd hiccup in our tempo. It was an awkward thing that didn't belong. It was off for the venue, lacked decorum. It took a play and a bottle of desert wine and a small cake in another restaraunt to rebuild the rapport we'd spent the evening building.

Whether or not we went to bed, and what we might have done there, is no one's business but our own. Common decorum requires some things be kept private. A gentleman doesn't kiss and tell; and a lady retains her mystique. On the internet there are forums dedicated to all manner topics. The trick, is being able to guage the light and the music, and the mood of the people at the next table, before errupting in displays of psychological nudity.

On the whole subject of stereotypical liberal and conservative attitudes, I hate both, the conservatives who eat up patriotic pabulum and hate criticism, and the liberals who feel that every statement has to be caveated with how bad America is and have a knee-jerk distrust of those who display patriotism.
